I'm a freshman in college right now, majoring in Criminal Justice. I'm really considering joining the Guard or doing ROTC but I don't want to be commisioned full time when I graduate. Any suggestions? I don't want to go talk to the recruiter/head officer guy on campus without having planned something because I don't want to get in the heat of things and sign something I shouldn't.

You could join the guard and then go to OCS (Officer Candidate School). I don't know how the Reserve components deal with officer training.

You will have to go to Basic Training no matter what you do, so plan for that, and I can tell you that any place you go will suck in the summer time.

I have a buddy that just finished basic and said it wasn't bad at all. If I decided to go ROTC I don't believe I would have to go to basic, maybe I'm confused though.

Hey VolFreak, I am pretty sure that going through the ROTC you do not have to go through basic. I am a Spec in the TN Guard and having a deployment to Iraq under my belt it is just my advice but I would go the OCS route. Being in charge of a platoon after going through the OCS from my experience the enlisted soilders seem to have more of a respect for 2nd LT that have been through basic rather than just going the ROTC route. Hope this helps good luck in your decision and God bless!!

I've heard this alot. I'm not really looking to become active duty though, maybe eventually I would want to. I'm more looking at it as a way to help pay for school and a good resume builder while being a part of something important.

If that is all your looking for then yea I would go ROTC then. Positive thing about ROTC while your going through that program I am pretty sure you can go to the drill weekends with the unit you are assigned to which will help you get to know the guys before you come out of ROTC with your commision.

Thanks! I'm really going to look into this and make sure it is a commitment I want to make
