Looking over the threads(primary at the one that ask what will and will not happen in the next 5 years), it doesn't seem like a whole lot of people have Tennessee winning the big one. I'm not sure if it's because of faith in Dooley or sanctions or whatever.

I'd like to get some opinions on if we'll win a national championship in Dooley's time here or even when we'll ever win one again. And I'd like to hear the reason for why or why not.

Dont know if we will ever win another SEC championship let alone a NC.Im not saying DD wont or cant.It all depends if he can get a couple top 10 recruiting classes and keeps the coaches together.I hope to see another NC before I die.

National Championship-I'd say another 20-26 years. It was a long road to the last one.

I think it all depends on who the new AD is. If Fulmer gets the job, Dooley wont be here in 5 years. Dooley would not get a chance to finish what he is tring to build here.

It's basically impossible to predict anything further than six or seven, maybe eight or nine years out, but I would say it's highly improbable or totally unlikely that UT wins the big one by 2020.

National Championships are extremely rare for any team. We're not going to win it in 2011. That's about as far as I'm willing to go with a prediction.

Tennessee generally hasn't stayed in the gutter for long... we'll be back in the hunt so long as the we don't pull a Minnesota and end up with an admin that abandons the sport. Yeah, the historical stuff doesn't mean much when you are down... but it certainly helps to be a top historical program when you are up.

That sounds unlikely... I'd say its more probably that if Fulmer got the job that a 7-5 Dooley would get 5 more years than he deserved. The man did not like to let go of friends, and he makes them easily.

I'm sure bammer freaks were saying the same thing when they were getting rid of baby Shula.

fyp

It's improbable for anyone to win a national championship in any given year. But that's all we know. Nothing more, nothing less. Just because it was forever and a day between our previous two championships doesn't mean its any less likely for us to win one in 2015. It's completely uncorrelated. I mean Florida had never won a national championship before 1996. They've won 3 since. My point is noone knows s**t about what's going to happen in 2012 or 2057.

2012.

Seriously though, who knows. Hopefully I'll get to see another one before I leave this world

National Championships are very difficult to get.

in 1998 if one of 3 plays goes against us we likely would not have played for NC that year which was our first opportunity in 47 years.

this league is 100 times more difficult to win now than it was in 1998. that is likely to get harder before it gets easier.

I seriously doubt I live to see us win another National Championship. Most reading this post won't either..

I hope to see an SEC Championship before I pass on..

I still don't understand what the reasoning for us not winning a championship soon is. I mean we have just as good if not better tradition than auburn who just won it all. Does everyone think its because of our coaches or our situation? What is it that tells you that we can't win one soon?

I'm hoping we pull an auburn (minus the pay scandal) and win one out of no where in the next five years :)

It's all how the ball bounces about 4-5 plays in 3-4 games, and with ga, lsu, fla, bama, aub all fighting for the same ball. Next year we should make a run at the SEC title. If we can get there, who knows.

Auburn won because somebody paid the father of one of most unstoppable players I have seen on the college level for 1 year of his service. UF won because they had one of the best college fb players of all time at qb. Bama won because of saban. We currently don't have that caliber of player or proven coach.

But on the other side of the coin, we've been a play or two away from the national championship game twice since 1998, and you could argue that we were a play away in 1996 too.

Somebody has to win the SEC Championship, and there are only about seven teams who are a credible threat year after year. So winning the SEC isn't too crazy. In the past, that's spelled title. We just have to hope it does in our year as well.

Larry, are you in your 40's or 80's? That will help to put your post in perspective. :)

Geez it's depressing how true this post is.

I'm only 27 but within the last few years the realization that I may die before UT wins another NC has started to sink in. It's far more likely that we win 0 than it is that we win 2 or 3.

Seems reasonable.
