NASCAR at Bristol Tonight -- First Step Toward Va Tech Game

No cars running Tennessee colors or designs tonight. VT paid to sponsor the 21 car tonight.

I'm kinda glad we don't have a UT car out there tonight. 40 different things can happen to that Va Tech car, and 39 of them are NOT winning. :)

I hope the keep a camera rolling during the whole process and give a time lapse from bringing in the gravel to the seats filling up.

Why didn't UT sponsor a car tonight? It would have only added to the hype of the biggest CFB game of all time

Gang, I'm sure this race would be fascinating...if they were racing. But I just saw a driver put on a blonde wig and dance to a Taylor Swift song because he's not in the car and the poor announcers are running out of things to talk about.

So...I'm out. Can't wait to see Bristol in a completely different way in three weeks!

Good night, and go Vols!

This is certainly going to make things tight leading up to the game. I still don't understand why they didn't race in Bristol last weekend instead of taking the week off. Why not make this weekend the week off? Would have made setting up for B@B a lot easier.

I'm not liking Nascar's chances of getting today's rescheduled race progressed enough to officially call it. There is quite a lot of lift and moisture remaining out ahead of the upper trough that is unfortunately taking too long to advance east. In the very least, it could be late Sunday night before showers and thunderstorms finally work their way out of the Tri-Cities. And I could realistically see them having to reschedule until Monday due to light rain/mist lingering around over night.

If they do have to reschedule for Monday, it's really going to put a lot of stress on the engineering crews. Hopefully they get just enough of a window in the precip to reach the halfway mark this evening.

One of the first things you learn in engineering management (right after "establish and maintain drainage") is, always include plenty of weather delay "float" time in your schedule.

I read somewhere that the transition from race track to football stadium is scheduled to take 11 days. There are 20 days between events as originally scheduled (20 Aug to 10 Sep). That sounds to me like about 9 days of "float" for weather and other unforeseen delays.

So my guess would be that they're probably still good, even if the race goes into Monday, that they wisely devised the schedule to allow plenty of breathing room.

Does anyone know how big the raised area (field) will be? The field itself is 360 x 160. Add sidelines/ border and it makes it somewhere in the neighborhood of 380 x 200. Being that it's raised 3-4 feet it would seem they will need to add even more area. Just curious....and obviously bored.

I don't know if this is fact but I was told they're rotating shifts and working around the clock. If 11 days is the magic number, then I'm sure they'll be fine even if they can't begin until tomorrow.

Don't know the answer to your question, Boca, but this might help with your guesstimate:

In cross-section, it will look a little like a contact lens. Because the current in-field is concave (all the water drains to the very center of the stadium), while the football field will be built up slightly convex.

Right in the middle, it'll be a 3.5 foot lift, with the fill material needed tapering down toward the edges until the existing surface rises to meet the falling outer edges of the new field.

That's how it was described in one of the articles, anyway. Zero insider knowledge here.

Yeah, Ultra, I read the same thing. I think maybe they crashed that CPM down into 24-hour days intentionally to create plenty of weather delay float time. Which, as it turns out, was a really good call.

VFL-82-JP,

Thanks. I thought the entire field was going to be built-up due to sight lines, not just the crown of the field. Maybe I mis-read

The race was originally scheduled for next week. Bruton asked NASCAR to move it back a week to give time for the changeover. Looks like they won't race til Mon but that's ok. Bruton's got this.
