Nakos reporting Aguilar is trending to be named the starter

Man this has been a long preseason. Last day media can view practices, so time to refine those speculations.

Heupel's biggest goal right now is evaluating Merk and Mac VERY closely to decide which of them is the one he wants to keep long term, because Aguilar is "the guy" until he's not but we need to identify which of the other two actually has a future at UT and we DONT let that one get away.

IMO, Aguilar would have had to look completely clueless to not be named the starter (at least for game 1) he just has way too much actual college playing time under his belt.

the only way Merk or Mac would have a chance at snagging that spot is if one of them looked like the second coming of Peyton Manning. if there's a tie between the three players then the tie breaker will go to the guy with the most playing time every time.

We only get 1 year of Aguilar as it is, he would have to really suck to be relegated to backup QB in his final year of eligibility.

with all that said, there's virtually no chance that we keep both Merk and Mac once Brandon gets here. just as long as we don't bungle that and we actually keep the best QB of the three on the team then we will be OK.
Might be out of Heupels hands if Aguilar goes down with an injury. They'd automatically turn to Merklinger. If things go as they've been rumored to have been going for him in camp, Heupel might be forced to play the freshman. You can almost feel it coming.

Nope, never thought that and also thought Nico was overrated.
There was zero inclination from anybody around the program after watching spring game and headed to the fall that Hooker would end up being Hooker.
Go take a look back at spring game and fall scrimmage notes if you don’t recall. He was not grading well.
It took coaches/Hooker conversations about playing football the way he played basketball for it to start clicking on the field after being so robotic in the spring and early fall.

Oh, so that's how it works... 😂
You clearly don’t know much about football, so let me break it down from the perspective of someone who actually played college ball. In most cases, the guy who performs better in practice gets the nod. Bringing it back to the OP, you’re out here declaring other QBs “better” without being there to watch them practice, see their leadership, or hear them in the huddle and locker room. That’s just silly, man.

And yeah, Hooker outperformed him later, but if we’re talking about why Joe started, the answer’s obvious. Look at his raw talent. Look at his character. In an era where QBs jump ship the second they’re not starting, he stayed. He led from the sidelines, backed his team, and waited for his moment.

That’s why I’m here defending him. Using him as your go-to cheap shot isn’t just weak, it’s childish. It says a lot more about your immaturity than it does about him. Honestly, you’re a sad excuse for a Vols fan.

Edit: So if one of them is going to transfer because they don't play or get the "nod" frankly we are better off without them. That was part of my point I forgot to highlight, lol.

Not a surprise Joey named starter. With the portal now you can't stack QB's like you used to so if your buried on the depth chart you transfer to where you have a better shot a playing, and why not. You only have one college career.

Agree with the posters that Merk was not going to start this season anyway but he should push for more playing time than he got last season so he does have some experience.

Hold up hoss! Before you start taking personal shots at someone, you should check yourself!

You obviously didn't see my sarcasm when I said "oh that's how this works". I know football bro and me referencing the Hooker vs Milton thing was strictly saying that not everything you see in practice translates to the field.

Since you say you played college football, you should know this. This has nothing to do with trashing Milton or any player. All I said was I feel like Merk would've been the better option based off what we're hearing from the media.

Neither is tearing it up so why play a dude that's only got 1 year and he's done when you can play a dude that has 3 when it's this close, makes no sense to me. If JA was clearly a lot better, I could see it, so before you get all defensive over someone else's opinion, you should probably try to see their point 😊

You can't explain Milton over Hooker though.
Sure I can. It's the same reason Milton got a ton of hype last pre-season where Patriot beat writers said he looked better than Drake Maye. And it's the same reason Cowboys beat writers are wetting themselves over Milton this pre-season. He genuinely looks like the best QB you've ever seen in practice.

But that seems to be overwhelming consensus. So much so, that Merk may be 3rd on the depth chart at this point.

Just one comment about your statement. If true that experience is the deciding factor, CJH will have to bring in a transfer every year because, barring an injury, the 2nd and 3rd QBs will never get experience.
If Joey starts, it will be the 4th straight year a new QB has started. And of course next year will be guaranteed a 5th straight year (unless NCAA just drops the rules game) of a new starter. It has worked pretty well so far. Portal starters are the future I guess.
If we have to bring in a transfer every year, what does that say about the staffs ability to develop QB's?

It unfortunately is the world we live in now. The days of developing a freshman to take over for a upperclassman is gone due to transfer portal and NIL. It sucks but it just is what it is teams are forced to reload every winter out of the portal.

Do you mean this, Joe Milton? Who is also in the NFL and is proving to be one of the most raw talented quarterbacks in the league? He may have struggled mentally here, but it is outrageous for some of you typical fans to continue to speak negatively about him since he decided to stay at UT, even when benched, when he could have gone anywhere else and started. You're embarrassing kid.
That doesn’t mean he was a better college QB that Hooker.

So you say go with the guy who has looked worse in practice? I will go with what the staff thinks, after all they see them everyday and we don’t. GBO
No, if that was the case, they would go with GMac, correct? 😊
If 2 dudes are pretty much the same, 1 dude has 2-3 years left and the other 1 year, why go with the guy with 1 year and have to do this all over again next year.
