My Workout Journey

I'm expecting a big update since you haven't posted in two days, no excuses!

4/3/12 Update

Sorry for lack of update yesterday - had a sick 2 1/2 year old little girl to take care of. And I wasn't feeling so hot either........just a rough day. Today we are both feeling mostly better so back on track. Yesterday calories (1400) - Calories burned (0) = 1400. Did not work out Sunday trying to recoup and then was sick yesterday so mailed it in again (I know, slacker) so I'm back to it tonight hopefully. Did not feel like going 30 on the elliptical this morning but will do the DDPYoga tonight and be back on track for the remainder of the week.

Thanks everybody for the continued support....

4/4/12 Update

Was asked by a few friends over at Team DDPYoga to do a video so in 90 days I'll be able to see how far I've came. I trimmed it down as much as possible..........the workout is over 50 minutes long and put this down to a 5 minute clip if anyone is interested:

4/5/12 Update

Total calories (2100) - Calories burned (750) = 1400

Ate a little more than planned but it worked out since I doubled up on workouts by doing Stand Up DDPYoga + 30 minutes elliptical back to back. I was drained and DONE after I got finished. Doing the Stand Up DVD I pulled something a little in my lower back yesterday so this morning was too stiff to get up and do the elliptical. I'm going to go for Diamond Cutter tonight and likely will hit 20-30 minutes on the elliptical afterwards. Tomorrow I'll try to drag out of bed for the morning elliptical and then Diamond Cutter tomorrow night followed by Saturday mornings 1 1/2 hour elliptical marathon workout.

I've pedaled back a "little" this week after pushing too hard last week with 5 straight days of Diamond Cutter and 4 days of elliptical. I'm not looking for a huge weight drop this first week of the new month since I've taken it a little easier. We'll see - I'm coming on strong these next couple of days now that I feel I've regained my full strength after wearing myself down last week. There's a fine line between pushing too hard and not hard enough. I'm trying to find that sweet spot of how much exercise to calories eaten per day to stay strong AND still lose the weight as quickly as I'm trying to do.

I'm still very motivated and see changes almost daily. Even subtle changes like bending over to pick up something I dropped instead of having to get on my knees to grab it. Now that I have this increased flexibility it's really helping with everyday things. I see more definition in my leg muscles, continued shrinking of by belly bulge, and veins in the arms are coming back strong once again.

Just knowing I'm on my way and each week I step on the scales on Saturday to know that's the highest my weight is going to be is a good feeling. I punished my body for the last several years with reckless abandon. I didn't gain 140 pounds overnight so I can't expect to lose it overnight either. But with continued hard work, plenty of sweat, and continued dedication to making my life better I will reach my goals. I would very much like to tip the scales under 300 pounds by my birthday (June 9th). I have about 55 pounds to go and plenty of time to get there. And I'm not stopping there - will continue to lose weight until I reach my tentative goal of 215 pounds. Eventually I may want to drop under that but 215 is something I think I can carry around and still feel very healthy - especially compared to 390.

I'm on a similar journey. Played football in high school at about 230. After three years of college I ballooned up to about 300.

I started working at FedEx Ground last year and started losing weight little by little. Then I started watching what I was eating and working out after work and now I'm down to 220, the lowest I've been since I can remember.

Although my weight loss is slowing down because I'm getting in shape and don't have as much to lose now, I'm still trucking along.

What I've learned in my little venture is that is 50% in the gym and 50% in the kitchen. Good luck to you and to me as well. I hope to be down to 190 by a little after Christmas. It's a difficult but great journey as well as a better way of living, and I feel soooo much better now.

PM if you need one on one talk, we could both probably use it.

4/6/12 Update

Yesterday Calories (1400) - Calories burned (550) = 850

Yesterday I was a madman - a crazed maniac. I fought Diamond Cutter to the bloody end like always and then said you didn't destroy me like usual. So, I went to the bedroom and grabbed my kicks and laced them up and hit the elliptical for another hard 20 minutes. NOW that back to back kicked this big boy's happy ass. I was sucking more wind than Kansas during Tornado season. I'm pretty sure the oxygen level in the house dropped for about 5 minutes after I got off of the elliptical.

When you are over 350 pounds you are probably not going to like what you see in the mirror. I've HATED what I've looked at in the mirror for far too long. Now, I still don't like what I see but know that I'm changing that one day at a time. But I am noticing more muscle definition more and more as the days go by. I don't absolutely hate catching a glimpse of myself anymore. Do you know that I don't have very many photos of myself with my beautiful 2 1/2 year old daughter just because I couldn't stand seeing myself so fat? How horrible is that..........but I'm changing that! I'm going to have some spring photos done with my baby girl next month. And in those photos it will be the lightest that I've been since 2 years before she was even born. I refuse to let my life control me anymore and I'm finally controlling my life again. I'm focused, determined, and know in my heart that every day I push myself is just one day closer to my goals.

Sure, I'm human and I'll have cheat meals and some days will be better than others. I understand that. Some weeks will be better than others and some months will be better than others. But at the end of the day I'm losing weight and getting in better shape week after week and soon month after month. I watched DDP's Living Life at 90% lecture a couple of weeks ago and man that was so good and a way I've never looked at life before. I'm actively trying to live life at 90%. I feel like that no matter what stumbling block I hit now I look at it from the 90/10 rule. 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. It actually really makes me think and instead of letting situations control me I am learning how to control the situations I'm dealt. I've always felt I was pretty good at it but now I'm zoned in on exactly how I should react and I think it's making me less volatile overall. In my job as a Collection's/Special Assets Manager I tend to fly off the deep end at times and snap in an instant. I'm taking control of that too and thinking of the consequences before I blow up quicker than Davey Boy Smith at Summerslam 92.

Thank you to anyone who actually reads my rambling lunacy. I conquered yesterday.....today here I come with a vengeance. Plan on a 55 minute Diamond Cutter workout tonight followed by a short break, then 20-30 minutes of weights, and 30 minutes of elliptical. Tomorrow will be my 1.5 hour elliptical jaunt in the morning then got to do a few things for work touring properties down towards Knoxville then off to Cleveland Speedway for the Shamrock 50 dirt race.

Tomorrow official weigh in and photos like usual......

Official weigh in 4/7/12 - 353.6

That is down from 357.3 last week and down overall from a little over 388 on Feb. 26th. Next week I'm kicking it into hyper drive for one week and really pushing the boundaries to see if I can get a big week. I'll be doing ellipticals at least 4 mornings and Diamond Cutters 7 straight days starting Monday of next week. I'm believing pretty strong I can drop close to 10 pounds with extra hard work in the next 7 days.

Sorry for lack of updates past couple of days has been a bit crazy. I blew out a tire on Sunday heading to the In-laws house and while changing it busted up my left index finger pretty bad. Saturday went to a dirt race and after it was over it was a 3 1/2 hour drive home so I only got about 3 hours sleep Saturday then Sunday after I finally got home and settled down after all the running around, changing tire, smashing finger, etc I finally wound up getting about 5 hours sleep. Then yesterday with finger still throbbing and different shades of purple and feeling like crap I took yesterday off from working out trying to recoup.

I just got in my Diamond Cutter workout tonight but still not back to 100%. Couldn't push myself like I have been doing and my finger is still throbbing but I did manage to get the workout in. I'm going to try and get to bed early tonight and make up for the lost sleep finally and maybe I'll be back to halfway normal tomorrow.

Saturday I think with the race track food I wound up having about 2,700 calories at the end of the night and Sunday I followed that up with about 2,100 after eating food at the cookout.

Yesterday and today I've bounced back ok and was under 1,500 calories yesterday and about 1,800 today.

Tomorrow I'm trying to get back on the horse and buckle down.

4/16/12 Update

Sorry for the slacking! Sometimes life just gets in the way. Very busy week at work, alot of travel, some sickness, and a bunch of other things. Last week all week I basically felt more tired than I have in awhile. I could not push myself as hard during workouts. I got 3 days of DDPYoga in and 2 sessions on the elliptical. Thursday I had to leave for work traveling at 5:00 AM so did not get a workout in after Wednesday night. I got home so late I did not get my nightly workout in either. I did a half effort Friday but I was still very tired. I don't usually have migraine headaches at all but I had 3 this past week - no idea why unless it's something in the air that triggered them - and maybe contributed to my sluggishness.

I managed to lose 0.3 pounds this week on my official Saturday weigh in so I sit today at 353.3. Measurements were nearly identical to the previous week. Since I had very little change I did not update photos. And I'm thinking I am not going to take photos but one time a month going forward as well since monthly changes will be more noticeable than weekly changes. I'll keep weighing myself every Saturday as well as doing the measurements with the photos at the first of each month going forward.

I'll keep updating the journal every day or two and give updates on any major changes. I've done fairly good at keeping my caloric intake to between 1500-2000 most days with the occasional day having a cheat meal that takes me over 2000 about 2x/week.

Not lost any motivation but felt I needed a hard reboot last week. I just could not get going like I wanted. I did squeeze in 20 minutes on the elliptical this morning and really felt refreshed and much better. My legs were responding and I wasn't feeling nearly as drained as I was towards the end of last week. I will do a session of DDPYoga tonight and perhaps another 20 minutes on the elliptical.

Tomorrow and Wednesday will be touchy - my dad is having major neck surgery in the morning and where they are having to operate they may have to break his collarbone to get to the area of operation. There's also some other little things that could be problems with the surgery so I'll be at the hospital all day with him. Wednesday he may get to go home so I'll play it by ear. My eating/workout schedule the next two days following today will definitely be a challenge.

Thanks to everyone who still reads this and is following along during my journey to better health.

tbh,

I see more excuses when I read your posts in the last 2-3 weeks.

Just sayin. I just said the same thing to one of my best friends, so I'm not trying to be a dick.

Everyone's busy. Make time.

Accountability is everything to me so that's why I've put this out here on the forums. You are absolutely right - I shouldn't have any excuses. This week I really plan on going hard with 7 straight days of Diamond Cutter and 5 days of elliptical workouts.

I don't find your comment as a dick comment at all. I should be able to make the time to put the work in no matter what. The only thing I will say in my defense - and I'm hoping it don't come across as an excuse. I have two jobs - my bank job is salary and my radio job is hourly. Between them I normally put in 50 hours a week. This week with my bank job getting ready for a big sale in June I put in about 85 hours alone. Wears you a little thin when you aren't conditioned for that. But at the end of the day I still need to be able to squeeze in my workouts. Apparently just keeping my calories down isn't helping me drop that much weight - I need those workouts combined with the better eating to knock it down.

Plus this week I'm actively trying to take my caloric intake to 1200-1500 calories all week and not let it creep up to 2000. I'm confident I'll drop 7-10 pounds this week and won't have any excuses if I don't.

Just stay strong, mentally and physically.

.3 in a week isn't going to get it done for you and a couple of those weeks could lead to you bailing.

Don't worry about that! I'm not bailing..........this is one time I'm sticking with it all the way through. I keep having people I don't see much comment that it "looks like you've been losing weight." I want those same people that may not see me for another 3 months to look at me in another 3 months and say DAMN.

You are definitely right - 0.3 won't get it done. That's why this week is important to me to really make a dent in this month.

Update 4/20/12

First off, my dad's surgery went well thank God for that. He was supposed to be in surgery for 1 hour and it took 2.5 hours. They fused his C7/T1 (neck to spine) and he's already had two others fused together in the past in his neck. They had to move his windpipe, artery, and other things over to do the surgery and then push them back into place. He's very sore but did get to go home Wednesday afternoon.

I was at the hospital so long Tuesday I did not workout. Wednesday I went hard - 1 hour on elliptical plus DDPYoga. About an hour after my workout I stood up to go get a drink in my kitchen and I had this hot/sharp burning pain coming from just right of my belly button. My umbilical hernia (which I've had for over 2 years now) was popped out and really throbbing. It hurts from time to time but most of the time it's tolerable - even working out. I was in pretty intense pain for about an hour before it let up I honestly thought it was becoming strangulated and I was going to have to go to the ER. It finally let up and I was able to go to bed. Thursday it felt a little sore but mostly ok so I done my DDPYoga when I got home with no pain. Within 5 minutes after hitting the elliptical that throbbing/burning pain came back once again. I stopped immediately and went and sat down and it eased up within 10 minutes. I called my specialty doctor (can't remember the exact term for her) this morning and she advised that I likely have torn the hernia a bit worse with my vigorous exercising lately. She said that she really needed to examine me next week to find out for sure. I talked about my pain and she was pretty concerned. She is advising me to be "very, very careful" exercising until I see her. She doesn't want me to get in a position where I strangulate an intestine and have to have emergency surgery. She's of the opinion that I may have to have the surgery sooner rather than later.

After saying that I'm "personally" of the opinion I've just strained it a little too hard lately and I just need to take a few days off and see if the pain subsides again. I've been living with this for two years and the more weight I lose the better it feels all around. I've read many back and forth stories on the effectiveness of umbilical hernia surgery. Some people say if you can deal with it you can live with one forever as long as you don't tear it worse. Others say that their stomach muscles come back stronger after the repair surgery is done. All I know is that:

1. I definitely don't want to strangulate this stupid thing and risk dying

2. On the flipside, I don't want to have the surgery and it not help out and I tear it back open by regular exercise.

I will see what the doctor says but it's definitely disappointing. MAYBE if I take a couple of days off the hernia will go back in a bit and I won't have the pain working out again for awhile. There's a possibility I just lifted something wrong to hurt it this time and the hernia needs a couple of days to sink back in. I just don't want to be setback on my weight loss by having a surgery, being laid up a week or two, then not able to exercise for some time.

I really tried to amp it back up this week - I've ate really clean for the most part and have worked out as time permitted. I may try the elliptical again tonight at the house and see if I can go "light" on it and hope the pain stays away. Believe me, if I feel that sharp pain I will stop immediately. Dying would kind of defeat the purpose of healthy living.

I'll give an update tomorrow on the official weekly weight and how I'm feeling. I'm crossing my fingers that I just strained the hernia a little and didn't actually do something to make it worse that will require the surgery I don't want to have to go through.

Thanks to everybody that follows along with me.

OFFICIALLY SHELVED - for about 5 weeks

I'm not giving up the journey and I'll pick back up ASAP. I saw the surgeon earlier this week and was advised my intestine is pushing into my stomach wall causing the pain. I've been pretty sore all week and the doctor told me it was close to an emergency situation. I'm having surgery to put a mesh in and repair the hernia this coming Thursday. I won't be able to lift more than 10 pounds for 2 weeks and then for the next 2 weeks can't lift anything more than 20. Said it will be "healed" as much as it can be 42 days after surgery. I'm going to keep eating as clean as possible to keep from gaining any weight back while I'm on the shelf.

Apparently I "should" feel like a new man after the 42 days are up and I can resume all normal workout activity. With the mesh holding me in place I was told it should be stronger than ever. I would hate to tear it open again but I'll trust the doctors that the odds of it happening again are slim and exercising won't just cause the hernia to return.

Thanks for the continued following - it sucks because this is a setback but at the same time I've needed to have this fixed for some time now. It's just a small bump in the road - and I'll be back better than ever soon. Right now I'm in constant pain since it's apparently been torn worse so the relief from the pain will be nice.

Will definitely keep this updated from time to time and back to near daily updates when I can light the candle again and start working out harder.
