My Thoughts on the Florida Game, After Sleeping on It

Good write up.

I think the biggest gripe on Heupels play calling stemmed mostly from trying to run a 4 minute offense to run the clock and then not going for a FG.

Conservative ground and pound isn't what this team does best and the game was close enough to be in doubt. Almost turned into a complete nightmare scenario at the end.

The FG decision was a tough one and I could see both sides of it given the distance.

Personally don't think this secondary issue gets rectified in season. They need more talent and much better execution. I have my doubts on that front with Martinez.

A win is a win though and I can't be happier with the way Hooker and those WR stepped up yesterday.

Also think both the TEs bounced back with big plays after the early mistakes. Heupels teams are showing something that we seldom saw under Dooley, Jones, and The Moron. And that thing is resilience.

I would just add to your “Napier is stupid” point that we would have won by 20-30 points if Florida played conventionally (punted on 4th downs, kicked field goals, went for extra points). Him playing so risky and having a lot of those calls pay off (5-6 on 4th downs where most coaches would only have gone for it on one or two of them) gave them like 14 or more points extra versus the average team. Teams that think they can beat us probably won’t go for risks like that.
I think other teams will see the folly of doing such. He took the gamble and it did not pay off in the long run. He's going to be like other coaches who woke up with regrets. Those calls could not be blamed on anyone else but the coaching staff. I hope he took the blame for it in front of his players. He needs their respect.

Because it’s conventional. We stopped him on the first one too which would usually make coaches gunshy, but Napier obviously felt like Florida needed to take risks. I think if he had gone for it less a lot of our fans would think our defense played well.
You're right. His strategy did expose our weaknesses on defense.

Completely agree. I mean the fact that sunbelt Billy went for so many times in 4th down so early told me a lot. It told me he was afraid of what was gonna happen to his team. I get going for it on 4th down in the 3rd or 4th quarter. Or if you are really close to scoring and you hit momentum early on? I get that. But he showed desperation early.

You are right. If he would have punted many of those times, we likely score at least 2 more TDs.

While I will not really disagree with you, looking at our schedule we don’t face another QB that’s even close to ARs physical capabilities in the run game. Young, Bennett and Levis can al move when needed. But they are not as fast and strong as AR.

I usually divide these thoughts up into positive and negative. But we beat Florida. Doesn't matter that I expected to win or that Florida isn't great. I would rather beat Florida than anything. So I'm not making a negative column. This win was HUGE. Thoughts:

-Great environment. I'm still hoarse. Crowd was loud and the place was packed 40 minutes before kickoff. Great Vol Walk. I have to think recruits were blown away.
-Hendon Hooker should be a top Heisman candidate. He was incredible.
-I saw some folks on this board complaining about play-calling. Folks, Josh Heupel is in the conversation of best play-caller in America. I can usually tell the folks who don't know much about football because the first thing they criticize is play-calling, not knowing what all goes into it or that execution is more important than the actual call. However, I can't think of a coach who has called more plays that result in wide open receivers as often as Heupel does since Steve Spurrier. Those look like blown coverages to the average fan. To an extent, they are. But an offense can find a pressure point on a defense that causes blown coverages. It's not a coincidence that it's happened so often to our opponents in the last 2 years. It happened 3 or 4 times down the field yesterday. He also generates some great opportunities in the run game, one of which led to Small's long run (which would have been a TD for a really good RB).
-Proud of the way the WRs, especially Keyton, stepped up. Since we got out with a win, it might end up being a good thing that Tillman missed a game because we generated a little depth with Keyton. Oh, and he made one of the greatest catches in UT history.
-The offensive line protected well. They've improved since last year. They gave up the one sack early, but other than that, Hooker had a lot of time to scan the field on most plays.
-I hope Sampson can get up to speed during the off week. Small just doesn't have game-breaking ability (although I respect his short yardage toughness). Sampson looks like the only RB we have right now who can become a star.
-The defensive line played better than 600+ yards would indicate. They generated some pressure, but Richardson is tough to catch. They aren't Bama or Georgia level, but they're MILES ahead of where they were last year. And they're good against the run. Omari Thomas is a star. What a game he played.
-But the secondary is bad. They're especially bad at CB, but the Safeties weren't great either. I think Hadden, McDonald, and Charles will be good players, but they're not there yet. I hope that's an area that we see improve as the year goes on. Hopefully, again, the bye week does some good here. They HAVE to tackle better. Have to.
-I like the way Princeton Fant kept fighting. But I think Warren should be the starting TE and get most of the PT.
-Awful officiating. Florida got away with obvious holds the whole game. They got away with delay of game penalties. Obvious ones. Small's TD that wasn't called a TD didn't hurt us, but still. And what was the deal with the onside kick that Florida recovered only taking 1 second? The guy ran 20 yards! They should've run at least 5 seconds off the clock. That's something that, even if you miss it, you can fix it. These officials didn't have a clue.
-Billy Napier is stupid.
-I've been adamant all week that there is no curse. Florida beats Tennessee because they outplay us. But man, I'll admit, when they got that onside, I started thinking, "Oh God...are we cursed? Is it going to happen again?" If Florida had won in that fashion with this Florida team against this Tennessee team, I would've started believing in a curse. And I would've started to wonder if we're ever going to beat them. It was as if the "curse" tried to rear its head and we stomped it down. Consider the demons exorcised.
-Florida played as well as it can play. Of course. Richardson made throws that he hasn't made all year. I think Tennessee's plan was sound...they held down the run game and made him throw. And he made us pay. But again...awful secondary. Nonetheless, we closed it out.
-Speaking of closing it out, I know some folks are dogging Banks...I'm not. With that secondary, I don't know what you do from a play-calling standpoint. They don't play well in the zone and playing man opens up even more options for Richardson to run. But Banks' decision to bring pressure on the last play was great. Most DCs sit back on that play and only rush 3. I hate that approach, but it's the one most choose. Banks brought pressure knowing AR would have to stand in the pocket awhile, and it caused the bad throw and INT. Ballgame.
-I love that effort is never an issue with this team. They play hard for this staff. That hasn't always been the case in the last decade, but they clearly care about playing hard for this staff.

Bye week. A week to heal up, get better, and get ready to beat LSU. 4-0 feels nice. But beating Florida to get there feels much better.
My hat is off to AR, man he is hard to get on the ground, and it seems like he throws better on the run than in a clean pocket; not to mention a normal QB would have fumbled when we hit his arm that one time. He's as strong as a young bull.

Sorry, but this was just funny.
Uh, yeah was trying to avoid this but… not knowing the basics of post possession on special teams plays is comical.

Most weren’t questioning the play calls. At least the ones that DO understand football were questioning the conservative approach on the last offensive drive and the lack of adjustment after Richardson proved he could throw the football effectively.

Two points, first, test the edges of the defense on first and five and second and four, don’t run the play clock down inside of 10 seconds before the ball is snapped, when the game clock isn’t running. Next, it’s obvious some of the younger players in the secondary don’t understand zone concepts and they are thinking way too much. As aggressive and effective as the offense is, the defense should be able to simplify the back end let the front pressure the football. When they did pressure the football, they forced more incomplete passes.

Officiating - also missed not 1 but 2 horse collars by the same lb on hooker.

also, completely agree with you about people dogging Banks, I think given what Florida’s strength has been, running more zone (which we don’t do near as much as we did this game) was the absolute right call… Richardson was just finding the pockets within the zone.

I take it you haven’t watched Jayden Daniels play for LSU. He has 60 more rushing yards, and averages a yard more a carry than Richardson.

He does present a lot of the same challenges that AR presented. It’s actually nice to get the film on TN vs. AR, immediately get a bye week to work on it, then play LSU.

Napier goes on 4th down because he knows the Vols will score on the following drives regardless of where they start on the field. Going for 2 was stupid and calling a timeout toward the end of the 1st half was also dumb. I was equally not impressed with Heupel not going for first downs on the last drive. Florida had not stopped us all game and another first down would have sealed the game. Glad it worked out for a win, but it could have been a disaster.

A couple of adds:
Florida executed its gameplan at will and one that we will see often - slow, steady drives to get some points, while keeping the UT offense off the field. The 4th downs were planned and clearly show less respect for the D and much more respect for the O. If we held a couple, we likely add points and opens the game up.

As noted in the forum, the DB's are developing. They have strait-line speed and closing speed, which is great. Its just not in-sync and out of position. Also, the LB's missed coverage as well (thinking RB's/HB's on wheel routes and TE on seams). However, the line did great and LB's did well against a running QB. Can see a very aggressive front 7, shortening coverage time for DB's - "QB cant beat you when he is on his back"

IMO, coaches are having to play Hadden, McDonald and Charles because of a lack of talent at CB. They took some bad angles yesterday and it cost them. As Greg said, they will get better with experience, we just to have to live with the learning recruiting priority.
Secondary poor at best. Hadden terrible. How did Pruitt not recruit better?

Can’t agree more on the decision to pressure at the end. I’ve always hated prevent and you can’t risk it when that qb can hit the end zone from his territory, let alone yours. I’m in the pro Banks camp and refuse to critique him until we get better players. I like his play calling and think he makes the calls that are needed to win games using the strengths of the talent he has to work with. This coaching staff has somehow made lemonade with rotten lemons and vinegar and they deserve our support and praise, not our questioning at this point. Kirby and his crew were losing to lesser opponents with far more talent early in their tenure. Lots of upside with these guys-go vols!

This, he went for it on 4th down, what 6 times? That’s 6 3rd down stops that the defense won’t really be viewed as having any credit for.

In the UNC-Appy St. game UNC returned an onside kick for a TD so did they screw up by allowing that?

Was UNC kicking or receiving? The kicking team can only recovery it and cannot advance it but the receiving team can touch the ball before it travels 10 yards and can advance it. I have seen us do that where we ran up and snatched it and took off while the kicking team was all waiting on it to go 10 yards and none of them were watching our players.

Yep, I went back on youtube and looked at that UNC was the receiving team so they can advance it.
