I have been lurking around reading on this forum now for several months and just joined tonight

As the saying goes, opinions are like a-- holes and elbows, everyone has one but here is mine.

I have been a long time Fulmer supporter who knows Fulmer is not perfect but still better for this particular coaching job than most others would be. However, after the Florida game I was ready for a change. For about a week or so, I had begun to agree with those of you who want Fulmer gone. As much as I hated it, I had begun to believe those people who say this man cant coach and is washed up. I began to believe those who said he only won in the past because of superior talent and none of it was due to his coaching ability.
I had also began to believe that if we did not act fast and make a coaching change, that this program was going to go down the tube quickly.

Over the last couple of weeks I have had a change of heart again which is not primarily due to us looking a little better as of late.

What I began to realize is that even all of the supposed great and flashy coaches in college football have their flaws and do not perform any more consistently with the same or better talent than Phillip Fulmer does at Tennessee. Who out there is so great? Urban Meyer ? He wins a national championship with someone elses recruits while also being fortunate enough to win it even though they lost a game last season. I might add that they darn near lost several games last year and were fortunate to be in the NC game last year in the first place, and people have the gall to call our National Championship lucky, even though we were undefeated. This year the miracle Meyer has managed to loose 2 games he shouldnt have, I think even Fulmer could pull that off.

Mark Richt, media darling for a couple of years, and supposed future superstar coach at Georgia. What has he done to eclipse Tennessee and Fulmer. It looks to me like Georgias program might be more stagnant than Tennessees has been over the last few years.

The list goes on and on, Tressell(Ohio State), Weis(Notre Dame), I dare say Carroll(USC), they lost 2 games last year and are underperforming this year, and jees they recruit top 5 every freakin year, Stoops(Oklahoma), Mack Brown(Texas), sure won a NC a couple of years ago, but should have won several due to great talent. Les Miles(LSU), need I say more about him. Frank Beemer(VT), media darling a few years ago but cooled off now, Bobby Bowden(FSU) now having a horrible downturn. I could go on and on but I hope you get my point. All of these coaches at one time or another are or have been considered great but still have their ups and downs. Their teams frequently underperform and dissapoint their fans for various reasons such as recruits dont pan out, team chemistry, or just the fact that their competition gets better along with bad luck. Does this mean that they have now forgotten how to coach, that they are no longer worthy of coaching at a major university anymore?

Look, my patience like yours does not last forever. If Fulmer does not get our program back to where it was in the 90s a good percentage of years soon then I will agree we need a change, but if we overreact we could see a turn for even the worse. I dont believe college football will be as stable at the top as years past, we will see a lot of different teams up and down in 3 to 5 year cycles or even shorter in a lot of cases due to scholarship reductions and spread of talent. I firmly believe there will be very few 10 to 15 year dynasties, just stable programs that fairly consistently finish in the top 15.

I believe coach Fulmer deserves a chance to get our program back to NC contender. At Tennessee we have to have someone who can recruit outside of the state. We can not rely on instate talent like a lot of other SEC schools. If we hire another coach who is to say they will be able to recruit worth spit. Tennessee no longer has a monopoly on big and great facilities and fan support. I firmly believe Fulmer can still recruit and has not forgotten how to coach.

Lets support our coaches and players, be positive even in adversity, after all, future recruits are listening to us.

I want to give Fulmer a chance, I believe he deserves it, he is after all like us, a proud Tennessean and bleeds orange, albeit a little richer than most of us.

Go ahead and proceed to rip me to pieces, I know it is coming.

Go vols, crush Bama, I freakin hate Bama and their stupid roll tide, their cocky attitude, their frequent reference to the "Bear". Please Vols, send their fans home crying to their ugly little homes in their ugly pathetic state. I even hate the way the word, "Alabama" rolls off the tongue, makes me want to puke. I hope they loose every game the rest of the season

If you've been around for a while, you should know that our patience is running thin with the Fulmer threads.

Thank you nameless, faceless person. I appreciate learning of your opinion.

unless your last name is dickens you're nameless and faceless as well. and seeing how there are plenty of dickenses in this world, I would say you're nameless even if that is your last name.

Welcome to the board. Continue to post your thoughts and opinions. I still want Fulmer gone, but that's just me. If he gets to the SECCG, I'll agree he should stay for one more year though. I still don't see it happening though.

just beware that your threads can get merged... Don't take it personally. Enjoy the ride man.

Welcome to VN :hi:

I still believe the only CPF thread this week should be about how he will slap bammer around and continue his dominance.

The problem is that we've heard posts like this for at least 5 years now. Fulmer looks terrible, wins a couple of games and everyone forgets why we hated his performance in the first place. Every year, we say the same thing and give him one more chance and then the very next year we start singing the same old tune. How many more chances does this guy get? I've heard of having 9 lives but this guy must have 20. our game against bama not being televised on a national network should tell you something folks. We aren't relevant anymore in the college football picture. It's so bad that we can stomp a team in the ground on a saturday and the very next day be ranked a spot behind that team with the same number of losses. When is something going to be done to get Tennessee football back to the top?????

Well thought out post from NeylandDrive.

The thing that keeps jumping out in my head is not that we lost a couple of games, but the way we lost them. Failing to convert on 3rd and short (from the shotgun no less) and giving up 104 points in the two losses still makes me wonder if it isn't time for Coach Fulmer to move on.

We were so bad against Florida that I thought it was possible (not probable, but possible) that we could go winless in the SEC and I have never ever thought that before. I really thought we would lose to GA, SC, and KY, with MS and VU as possible victories.

Where we are today, I can live with one more SEC loss this year and a respectable showing in a bowl game. A trip to SECCG and all is forgiven.

I guess we will see how it plays out...

GO VOLS!

If Fulmer were shown the door, who would you like to see as his replacement?

There are about 17.5 million pages in here on that subject. Just go back through the older threads and you'll know.

I'm only here b/c it's 3rd Sat in Oct. I'm not interested in research, just current opinions on who people would want. When we were looking last season, I never thought CNS would be a possibility. I was actually very stoked and subsequently letdown over RR. Just curious what Vols fans are thinking.

we're are thinking that we've won three games in a row...and are doing just fine without bringing this subject up for the past two or three weeks

Right now it seems like the only thing that is saving Phil's bacon is having snapped the three-game home losing streak to UGA. It's hard for the fence riders to get motivated/angry enough to want a change and it may well be that even if UTK loses 2-3-4 more this season the anger level will not return to where it was after the UF game. I doubt this is the year that UTK football will be re-invigorated by a new staff almost as much as I doubt the Vols will win out. My guess is it will take another couple of years of 8-9 win seasons to get the seat uncomfortably hot again. We've been living in Mediocreville for about a decade now so I guess a few more years of it isn't that big of a deal.

A decade? Really? So it's 2007.... a decade is 10 years. That means 97.

1 13-0 Season and a National Title and SEC Title
2 11-2 Seasons and an SEC Title, an SEC CG Appearence
2 10-3 Seasons and an SEC CG Appearence
1 9-4 Season
1 9-3 Season
1 8-4 Season
1 8-5 Season
1 5-6 Season

See, this is the problem with people that have an agenda against Phil. They ignore the positives and make too much out of the negatives. It would have served your purpose much better if you would hit on the 5-6 season and even attack the 8 win seasons. But you have to throw out something so silly and obnoxious that you lose every ounce of credibility. (Even saying the last 5 years have been mediocre would have been MUCH more accurate.) Quit trying to pounce on every single opportunity to rip coach Fulmer, and focus on facts.

More like LSU and Auburn getting us back in the SEC race, but nice try though.

A win over a mediocre Georgia team and Mississippi State will make anyone forget...I mean come on?
