My take on the Cal game

OH WOW. Do you REALLY think I'd get on a message board, post a picture of myself, use my real first name and claim to have graduated from a law school I didn't actually attend?

Get over yourself.

Well I had my doubts about your claims, and the fact that you seem to not know the layout of Boalt hall would indicate that you are blowing smoke about having a JD from there. So in answer to your questions, yes I think you are full of it.

And I got over myself long ago, I recommend it.

Yes our pass defense was sketchy, but traditionaly that will take a game or two to get going, but our Run defense was amazing. Your team was almost completly one dimensional. And why should we need defense if you keep claiming that no team except SC could challenge the mighty sec. If we can stop any sec teams offense we should be all right. Isn't that what you've been saying.

you will need d because you gave up 31pts which was very close to 38 to a very plain, preschool scheme (so to speak) ran offense. Throw a good solid sec d with a little more advanced ran offense, and you have flashbacks of them boys clad-n-orange from last year very fast.

yeah I was joking, our defense looked terrible, there were holes in coverage everywhere. I was just saying that the way a lot of people are bashing the PAC 10 it sounds like we just played the toughest offense were gonna face all year besides SC. But like I said earlier Cal's rush defense is solid, and has been solid for a long time, even if your running backs suck. (Which I don't think so because #27 was a hog, he was huge and seemed untackleable on kick returns.) We have shut down Reggie Bush, and Lendale White, without allowing either of them to pass 100 yards when they were playing. The last time a team really ran over us was 4 years ago when Oregon State and Stephen Jackson man handled us.

All I had to hear for the second half of the season last year was "I bet Cal would like to play the Vols again"

I hope the media is saying the same thing about us this year in about week 12.

You read entirely too much from my unwillingness to answer your question.

But to appease your doubts, the windows of the Boalt library do not look out at an intersection. They look out on Bancroft Ave, the Jewish Student Center and a frat house (maybe SAE, if I recall correctly).

Once Ainge can use all his fingers, Ill bet you will be. his board sounds just like ours last year, all the folks running around crying the sky is falling, the sky is falling!

i bet you have one or two more losses this season.

I hope if we do play again, it will be after a few games, so neither team has to be worried about being prepared, and even better lets play in Colorado at a neutral site so homefield adavntage doesn't play a role. But for real, I really hate Meyer and the Gators, so I hope you guys have a good year and were your only loss, and maybe we'll have a rematch again in the national championship game. (At a neutral site) lol

I am surprised you didn't leave the orange T on your cheek for the ceremony, I am sure that would have been worth it. And I am still wondering what do SEC loyalists say about the Big 10, and Big 12, because the PAC 10 has knocked them around in bowl games lately.

Thats the best case scenario, id love to play Cal again once we get the kinks out. I would of much rather of started out with Southern Miss then traveled to Cal in Week 2. I bet after next weeks games both teams will see alot of improvemnts all over the field.

If Michigan beats Oregon does it mean that Appalacian State is superior to all?????:)

(right)

Close enough. The library is on the corner of peidmont ave and bancroft ave. the celestory windows that look east face Peidmont and the I House. It is not the jewish student center, it is the lehrhaus judaica (unrelated to the university) and it is not the SAE house it is the DKE house. So i guess you were there, but like so many postings here, you didnt pay much attention to what you saw.

Holding a team that rushed for -11 yards against Florida last year somewhat in check isn't exactly what I would call "amazing" run defense.

This is a classic statment.
Your team was just out run last Saturday.
One of our linebackers outran your running back on a fumble returned for a touchdown.
Coach Fulmer said in a post game interview "They definitely have a lot of speed, and in our league we play a lot of teams with speed, but they definitely made us look not very good."

And now you say that only SC has enough speed on D to come near your mighty SEC. Wow, you have enough faith in your belifes to ignore all evidence, or just when it comes to football?

Though hast eyes and seeth not.
Tennessee is the 5th or 6th best team in the SEC. I love how your Johnny Come Lately program beats a team that will lose 5 or 6 games this season and suddenly proclaims itself relevant. Cal wouldn't finish higher than third in either division of the SEC. Come back when you play in a maeningful bowl, assuming that actually happens in our lifetime.

Like how Cal "knocked" Texas Tech around in the 2004 Holiday Bowl? They way Oregon "knocked" Oklahoma around in the same bowl a year later?

I won't even get into our perfromance on the defensive side of the ball, there's been enough said already and it's too obvious. I also believe that this will correct itself. However, here are two issues that I believe need to be addressed immediatly in order to prevent the offense from stalling again at critical times:
1. Quit throwing short of the down marker on third down! This would seem obvious but why have we seen this over and over for years? We can make whatever excuses about personell and defensive alignments and it still doesn't make sense. I woud rather see an incomplete pass that was attempted past the down marker that a dump off screen five yards from a first down.
2. I'm very glad to see our no huddle offense and I think everyone would agree that it has enormous potential, however, we continue to give the ball back to our opponents w/ little time on the clock and expect them to sit on it just like we would, only to have them march down the field and score. Why? Every other team in the country seems to be willing to take risks, especially when behind. UT on the other hand, is so risk averse that it seems they would often rather not have the ball than make a mistake with it.
IMO, these two issues need to be addressed before we can compete for a championship in this league. And BTW, I don't blame this for our loss, we were beaten by a better team. Soundly.
GO VOLS!

If you think its Florida, the Vols beat the Gators soundly in a couple of weeks. Cal had experience all over the field. Florida is rebuilding a defense and has a qb that can only run. The Vols will shred the Gators D. And no team the Vols play this year has as good an offense as Cal.

A QB that can only run? Right........He had 300yds passing.

Florida is loaded with young talent, just like Tennessee. The only difference is Tennessee's young talent sits the bench, Florida actually plays their freshmen. Maybe if Fulmer would have played some of that talent that was on the bench, the outcome of the Cal game could have been different

What freshman that didn't play do you think would have made a difference against Cal?

Man hat i'am ready for a real coach,so all these left coast idiots will get off the board. They are just happy their little team that could ,finally beat someone who USED to be a top program.Man this sh-it is sickining. Thanks phil for making tennessee football a f...... joke.

Bummer! I was talking with Nick yesterday and he said that he wanted you guys to be undefeated on The Third Saturday. So try not to lose another one or he might get upset.

Although I agree that the Cal cheering while Mitchell was on the field was bush league, I would like to apologise for my barage of insults last week. Your team beat Tennessee and had our players gasping in awe of your speed and intensity. The exact fundmentals you shared about us last year.

Once again(as much I as try to defend Pilsbury) our team came out and played undisciplined football. Fumbles, poor special teams, stupid mistakes and non existant tackling by our defense have become common place for the VOLS. Offensive wise I give credit to David Cutcliff for having a disiplined group of young men, which is how he handles his practices. Unfortunatley, Fulmer continues to not follow General Neyland's maxium's...Poor special team play, and turnovers...THE GENERAL I am sure would be fuming right now but not PHIL, just clap those hands and every thing will be alright. Our special teams and tackling coach should be fired immediatley. We have been diplorable in those areas for years!
I welcome Southern Miss to Neyland. I hope I won't have to apologise to you for a piss for performance as well!

I've been a cal fan for 13 years now. . . we will lose to someone lousy. Mark my word. We will play SC close though. Gregory (our DC) has always held SC offense down. Bush never had a 100 yard game or TD against cal. As hat has said ASU and Oregon could both be tough on the road. Tedford's never won at oregon or at ucla (he's never lost to ASU). Though both UCLA losses we completely choked away. I have a feeling we destroy ucla. I'm praying for a bcs game. I don't think that is unrealistic.

Here's my take on that, and no offense to the win because Cal did earn it well:

In Cal's quest to post a lot of ground yards, I saw too much dancing and and prancing. Had we not been so gullible, they would have got smashed doing that. Need to focus on getting on down the line and not so much prancing. Could have put up even more on the ground. If Cal harnesses the running talent and focuses it, they are possibly unbeatable. The only other thing is really gut checking the Cal D. We did not have any big plays or deep plays. While Cal put up alot of yards, they were "pretty" yards basically juking a bunch of newbies all night. Our 31 points came from grinding it out against an experienced defense. The D front could be suspect against agrressive lines. Bottom line, if this is still the Cal of old, yes the big games you will play big and look good, then choke on a game that will cost you a 1st or 2nd place finish. You beat us on hte flash and dash with 2 or 3 outstanding players. You validated last years lost and squared things up. Ya'll were young then. We are now. We held our ground in the trenches, able to put up our entire 31 point game on safe, predictable play. Otherwise, we got outplayed, pure and simple. Good game.
