My Opinion of Dooley (I live in TN, LSU Alum)

I can pretty much speak for myself and most of Louisiana. The only reason I'm laughing at UT is because the fans are pissed they got a better head football coach with more integrity than Lane Kiffin even knows exists. Derek Dooley is a hell of a coach. LaTech is in Shreveport, the worst crime hell hole of LA, so you know its bad. He competes for recruits against Stoops, Saban, Miles, Petrino, Brown(all of TX) at a mid major school with no TV time/contracts. He took Boise St. to the wire. He beat LSU everywhere except the scoreboard. He is NOT a MEDIA WHORE. He does not need his daddy to be successful. He will handle off the field situations better than Fulmer + Kiffin combined. There is not enough crow in TN for volnation. So I say congrats on the hire, I'd swap HC for HC anyday(Not saying much but). This guy will succeed at UT. If anyone is going to a "Night in Orange" in Knoxville tomorrow, see you there!

1. LA Tech is not in Shreveport.

2. He is not competing with any of the guys you mentioned for recruits.

3. no one in the nation would swap Dooly for Miles. This statement shows you aer definitely not a Tiger fan. If any UT fan believes this, you are reaching for anything you can grap. Think about it.

4. You might only be right about integrity.

Long time LSU lurker here guys. I come in peace to have good conversations about SEC football. I have a lot of family in Tenn and pull for ya'll in the SECe. I really think that DD will be a very good hire for UT.

LaTech is in Shreveport, the worst crime hell hole of LA, so you know its bad.

You say you are from La. You fail your geography test. It's in Ruston.

This

He did nothing to improve La. Tech. Nothing.

This is not true. I am a regular poster over on Tigerforums. One of the posters I normally do not agree w/ posted the following:

As for Derek Dooley:

"Derek is exactly what I hoped he would be," said NFL Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw. "As far as I am concerned, he has exceeded everyone's expectations...He is making people stand up and take notice of Louisiana Tech....I could not be more proud to have him as our AD and our football coach."

Derek Dooley learned under his father, a College Football Hall of Fame SEC Coach. up until he went to college. He even helped led his high school to a 1985 State Championship in football.

Then in college ('87-'90 WR at UVA) he learned under College Football Hall of Fame Coach George Welsh (who was U.S. Naval Academy Class of '56, an All-American QB, and a coach for Joe Paterno for 10 years, and then was 134–86–3 as a head coach of UVA).

Then he graduated law school from Georgia in 1994 and married a girl that is now Dr. Allison Jeffers Dooley, a practicing OBGYN. He practiced law at a private firm in Atlanta for almost two years.

Then he got his first coaching job at Georgia with Jim Donnan, a College Football Hall of Fame coach that was 104–40–1 as an NCAA head coach.

Before Tech hired him, he coached for Saban for 7 years straight (at LSU and then Saban took him with him to the Dolphins). So that's a vote of confidence from a very successful coach that will also probably end of up the College Football Hall of Fame.

He's only 41 and Tech has already made him their AD.

He has taken a La Tech program that was basically in shambles and turned it around very quickly. He has the pieces in place for LT to continue to improve. He is a man of integrity and knows when to keep his mouth shut. He will not bring negative attention to your program.

UT plays Saban every year. Having been on Saban's staff for 7 years has got to be beneficial.

As to recruiting, again, having been on Saban's staff, that should be beneficial when recruiting against him.

People in La familiar with Tech have nothing but good things to say about CDD. I think in the long run, he is going to be a great hire not only for UT, but for the SEC as a whole. Best of luck!

If you're saying you would trade Dooley for Les Miles you should just jump off of Henley St. Bridge. Les Miles has the football IQ of my unborn baby sister.

It was a joke there fella. I have already gone on record saying I support the guy. But don't even try and tell me Derek Dooley is the second coming of Christ compared to Les Miles. I don't think Les Miles is anything special, but to say Derek Dooley is a far superior coach based on his body of work is laughable.

No matter who the guy is he has my support. I don't have to necessarily love the guy day one just because we hired him. This was an awful situation we found ourselves in, and I am not sure it could have ended much better. I honestly do not know. We'll move on. We better up the bandwidth on this site though, because it is going to get real interesting.

What a bunch a f-ing whiners. Just last night most of the whiners were whining about getting Cutcliffe back.

I don't think you get how close we were to getting Fulmer part deux.

So fickle you are.

Are you people just repeating that because this guy who has been dead wrong says it. He averages around a 2.2 star for his career at LTech. No, he is not competing with any of those guys on the recruiting trail.

Man, didn't realize the number of geography majors from Ruston who are on volnation. So my bad for localizing Ruston to Shreveport, I'm from BR and I get pissed when we get localized to New Orleans so, my bad.

Now back to the point at hand. UT has a better head football coach today than they did last week.

As you'll notice on VN, those who dislike a coach post ten times more than those who don't. It's just a vocal minority. Real UT fans support our coaches, and there are plenty of us out here. Welcome Coach D! Can't do any worse than the last two years! Now get some recruits...

Wait just a second... you don't sound like a Vol fan at all! You actually took an objective look at the guy.

Any chance we can swap you w/ one of our "fans"?? You know, a little trade?

He averages 2.2 star because he cannot get the players that go to schools like LSU, UT, BAMA, OU, etc... You realize all BCS schools have network contracts? This means 4 star Joe plays on TV every Saturday. Now Dooley will coach at a school where 4 star Joe plays every Saturday because there conference (SEC) has a network contract. Now that it is an equal fight, Dooley will win alot of battles. If you can't understand this, God Bless.

Excuse the heck out of me. Just trying to give a little positive La insight to you. I know a fair amount about a guy that you probably have never heard of before today and was taking the time to try to be helpful. He is a solid coach whether you choose to believe it or not. Sorry he's not your pick. Hope you get over your disappointment in losing the second coming. Sheesh. :mf_surrender:

thanks for your input...I know some posters on this site are that welcoming or accepting of fans of other teams and their views. The guy does have good experience...and while he only amassed a 17-20 record at LA Tech...he competed and took to the ropes some pretty good teams like LSU, Boise State, etc. with a considerably smaller talent pool to work with. He is also a pedigree coach being the son of Georgia legend, Vince Dooley (who by the way only amassed a 201-77-10 career record), so he knows the game and how to coach it. I think as Vol fans we should all rally behind this guy and at least give him a chance. We should give him and this football team the support they need right now. The verdict will be out on this guy until this time next year, but one thing is for certain, he comes in with more experience than Kiffin brought with him. Go Vols!!!

recruiting can be accounted for with additional staff as well as with the HC. Alot of the recruiting will depend on his supporting staff

Look, I understand all that. With that being said, he went 17-20. The three years before...16-20. He did nothing to improve La. Tech. Nothing. I'm not impressed.

Record isn't everything, he took over in 07

Category 2006 2007 2008 2009
Record 3-10 5-7 8-5 4-8
WAC 1-7 4-4 5-3 3-5
Turnover Margin -8 +1 +9 +7

Scoring Defense 41.7 30.7 23.7 25.8
Rushing Offense 130.1 155.2 187.1 184.2
Rushing Def. 225.4 137.1 103.8 162.8

The ESPN S.I.D. for the Ruston radio station said UT might not have hit a home run, but it definitely hit a triple with this hiring.

He was Saban's longest tenured asst. coach. He doesn't take no for an answer(sound familiar). He is a bulldog, very detailed oriented, very organized. He also said he is as smooth with the media as you get get with a coach(maybe helps with recruiting).

He is a taskmaster in his words & very hard to work for(i.e. Saban). He said he will surround himself with the best possible staff. But the important thing I heard was: Some people may think GA is his dream job, he played at UVA. His dream job was to be a coach in the SEC. I think this means he will be loyal to UT to a fault(if possible). If he is successful, we won't have to worry about him taking the next hot job.

I can live with those qualities, as long as he wins.

Just wanna add that I live in Shreveport and we don't have the alleged crime OP speaks of (and by now you know we don't have LaTech). And saying we are a tiny worthless city...well we're about as big as Baton Rouge LSU fan

It is crazy, but this seems to be the overall sentiment of LSU fans
Posted via VolNation Mobile

Spoke to a LSU fan today ...... called him "The best recruiting assistant coach Saban had for a few years". I'll take his word. He's a very knowledgeable football fan.

GIVE THE GUY A CHANCE! Let him get his people and system in here. Then we can BBQ him if he falls down.
