My irrelevant assessment

Today has been a disappointment. We all hoped to pull a few of the big names that chose to go elsewhere. Truthfully, that has been TN football recruiting for the last 5 years or so (with the exception of some big names Kiffin pulled out of his butt that would have probably been better for us if they stayed there.) So while today was disappointing it shouldn't be shocking to anyone. We are still in the same place today that we were the day Butch was hired.....wait and see...The first bit of evidence we have on his tenure is that he couldn't seal the deal on some guys that would have really helped (at least with public perception). Excuses can be made (and he had some legitimate hurdles) but they are still excuses. However, the book has not yet been written on how well Butch will do here. It still all comes down to winning on the field. None of us know if he will do that.

My basic point is that today is not a day of absolutes...it really shouldn't be a day of handwringing. This is what happens when you have losing records in 4 out of 5 seasons. Today doesn't change my outlook...I am 100% in support of Butch and this program (because I'm a Vol fan and that's what we do)...I am 100% unsure if he is the coach that can turn this thing around (because I am realistic and not naive). We won't know that for a couple of years...today wasn't great but what if Dobbs is Johnny Football 2.0? You just never know...I wish these kids luck and hope they are the foundation for great things to come.

Nice post, well done. But, I like many others are sick of waiting for good fortune to happen. We dont have time to wait another 2-3 years...this program needed INSTANT results and bliss!! Ya see Ole Miss today? That needs to happen for us asap...

It didn't help with public perception...we don't know if it will help win games...certainly it could have gone much better from a numbers and big name standpoint.

North announcing today would have helped but getting no else killed the mojo like you said. Not a great start.

I think today has been kinda funny. Basically, losing VB flipped everybody on how they felt we did today. Getting Bell would have moved us up to 15 on Rivals, and everybody probably would have been pretty excited about this class. We end up losing Bell and everybody thinks today sucked. I really thought he was gonna sign here and wish he did, but it seems like just that one player changed how everybody is viewing this class.

Bro, none of us want to wait...I certainly don't....but we have no choice one way or the other...I wanted Gruden...didn't happen...I didn't want Butch...it happened...remember, this is the second class for Ole Miss under Freeze...if Butch can improve the Vols on the field the way Freeze did for Ole Miss then maybe we have that type of class next year. That is a BIG if for sure...unfortunately our administration put us in this position...we as fans have absolutely no control.

good point...and a pretty accurate assessment....we still fell short in some areas...but Bell was a lynchpin of sorts for the fan base.

I'm just hoping a couple of the guys are program changers...it seems the coaches are sky high on Dobbs...hopefully they are not looking at him through Big East eyes.

I think there were three issues that caused the meltdown (of which I have been part): (1) CBJ and Co. were victims of their own success in getting these big time recruits to listen to UT only to get jilted at the altar, (2) CBJ cranked up the expectations through Twitter, etc., and then failed to deliver on the express and implied promises of the tweets, etc., and (3) UT fans are sick and tired of losing and seeing other SEC programs excel. All in all, CBJ's tenure is far from defined by this first class because it will be begin to be shaped by the on-field performance in 2013 and on the recruiting trail through 2014 NSD when he has had time to build relationships with recruits. He has won everywhere and I sure hope he can win here because I/we need it desperately.

Hope these coaches know but I ain't holding my breath on it.

One thing that does bother me is passing on players that we could have gotten that I think would have been able to contribute. I am not second guessing the coaches evaluations but we have given scholarships to less worthy players before. I would have given Rod Crayton a chance and possibly the Morris kid out of Memphis. Doing that might have helped us down the road with other recruits too.

Good point....CBJ to some degree exacerbated the disappointment with his social media hype...there has to be a reason other coaches are not as active with social media...maybe because of things like this....personally I like his use of technology.

This has been what I have been thinking for a while. Kids are not going to come to UT until there is stability in the program from the HC to the coordinators. There is also the fact that in most of the games last year we were outplayed by every team even Troy (yes that football powerhouse of Troy). Dooley couldn't coach and our team got outplayed in the second half every game. So we fired him. Losing is a habit and unfortunately in the past few years in games this has been what has happened. To these recruits perception we are losers! Butch is a winner! He's got to change the whole mindset of these kids to being winners and then WIN some big games! You win games, go to a bow you get good recruits and build a tradition (SEE BAMA)

Darn good post C-town. I'm sure it sums up the feelings of many Vol fans. All we can do is get jacked up for the next season and the next recruiting class.

Like someone said, I really think we were just one good recruit away from everyone being satisfied with this class.

I agree for the most part but seeing what Ole Miss did today makes the losing record excuse invalid IMO. I think we have a solid class, but it could have been spectacular.

I'm waiting to see as well and hoping CBJ can get it done on the field. We're due, holy f-ing S, we're due.

Alvin Kamara signing with Bama makes no sense to me at all with the number of running backs they have.

I feel the same way but he is going to have to do it with players that aren't as good as the ones they are playing against.

Social pressure plays hard on these kids. Karma go to Bama they are great. They forget to add he'll never see the field as a RB with Henry and Yeldon there.
