I remember being in High School and my English teacher asked us to write a Bucket List in essay form. One of the items in my list was seeing Tennessee vs. Florida, live in Neyland. Yesterday, sitting in the thick of the student section, I checked that item off my list. And while I wish we won, I am not that upset we lost.
I don't care if other students at other schools treat us with disrespect. I don't care if Florida fans throw trash at our players. I don't care if other fans chant "F@#$ you Vols" the entire game. That doesn't make it okay. And it damn sure doesn't mean we have the right to fight fire with fire.
As a 27 year old military veteran student, I chose to come to Tennessee to finish my degree because I absolutely love this school. I've been a Vol at heart all my life. I used to not think coming to UT was even possible because of my low-income upbringing. And now that I am actually here, I don't take it for granted one bit. I see the University of Tennessee as a sanctuary of sorts, and the students and fans that chanted "F@#$ you Florida" and singled out players over and over saying things like "Hey #4! You *********! I bet you love to S#@k big d@#k don't you!" made me sick.
Congratulations on representing the University of Tennessee as idiotic, ignorant, and classless. You all made me embarrassed to be in the student section with you. You made me embarrassed to even be a Tennessee fan. You all disgust me. And if you did any of that crap and you are reading this, you don't deserve to be at UT.
And from a devout football fan standpoint, you are one of the reasons it's been so hard to make progress with this team. Think of recruiting for example. Over 200 recruits and their families visited for the games yesterday. Sure Checker Neyland was awesome, and Lil John was cool. But do you think the parents of these 17 year old kids Butch is trying to recruit care about that stuff when all they hear is "F@#$ you Florida" and near violent disrespect from the students such as constantly flipping off visiting players and throwing stuff at them?? Clearly you have no idea just how much your actions hurt the team's progress.
I know what some of you will say..."It's just part of the game" or "They do it everywhere" or "Get over it man."
Just because it's part of the game doesn't mean it should be. Just because they do it everywhere else doesn't give us the right to do it too. And saying get over it shows just how little you actually respect the University of Tennessee and it's image.
So to those people involved in all of that yesterday, thanks for making the game I've waited for my whole life the most disappointing one I've ever been to. You don't deserve to wear orange on Saturdays.
