I'm was a little disappointed after last nights game. But after some sleep and some time to think on it, I don't feel so bad. Here are some of my points.
  • First we won, several ranked teams lost to unranked teams yesterday. We could have easily lost too.
  • We are playing freshman everywhere. Doesn't help a whole lot this year but we'll certainly benefit in the future.
  • We have no QB, and won't have one until Bray Gets here. Stephens may do better than Crompton this year and I think he will eventually get a shot. But two completely different coaching staffs thought crompton was better. I don't know just saying...
  • Defense was due a bad game. With that said there was still some hard licks being laid. I think we missed Rogan badly. And I don't remember seeing Lamarcus Thompson anywhere.
  • It was obvious Kiffin wasn't coaching to our strengths. He was coaching through our weaknesses. I am convinced that we could have lined up and ran the ball for 300+ yards and probably scored in the 40's. Kiffin knows that's not gonna work against the SEC gauntlet. He has to try to get the passing game some life. Not sure that was accomplished last night. But he has to try.
Our enthusiasm for a coaching change, and our excitement when that change occurred has clouded our vision a little. I think the change was necessary and I think we have the right guy for the job. It's just gonna take some time to get all the old out and the new in. We may not get as many wins as we would like. But remember Kiffin didn't promise how many wins. He promised to work harder than anybody and return this program back to a championship level. Let him get a couple of recruiting classes under his belt and I think we'll see the fruits of his labor.

I think the overall dissatisfaction with the game stems from the belief that non-conference games are supposed to be "gimmes" that allow your second teamers to get in a few touches and allow the fans a chance to sit back and relax for a game or two. When the other team doesn't get the memo, it makes for a lot of grumbling and complaining and suicide leaps from the bandwagon. Some of us remember the Tennessee of old, when "crummy" (Griff's word - not mine) teams like Ohio University were hiccups on the schedule and the REAL games were with other SEC teams or bowl opponents. Unfortunately, someone invented parity and I guess we all just have to live with it.

I am gonna get flamed for this but oh well.......... I think Crompton played decent last night. Other than the blown play where he turned the wrong way and the idiotic fumble, overall I think he played better. I dont knock him for the tipped pass that got intercepted. I liked the way we set up the deep route on a hitch and go just too bad he over threw him, however better him to throw the ball where if our guy isnt gonna get then no one is than to see him under throw it and get picked. I was worried about this game due to 2 reasons:

1. This team has a history of playing BCS teams tough. See where they were leading Ohio State in the 4th quarter last year as evidence.

2. Our team played 2 very hard fought games against UCLA and FLorida, thus making our team ripe for the classic let down game.

With that said I think that Kiffin's gameplan to try and let JC air it out a bit didnt exactly work out as planned but the kid didnt have a meltdown either. So I'll take it and move on and hope that CLK continues his crusade to find where Crompton hid all of those recruiting stars he had out of HS.

I have complete faith in Kiffin.................I have absolutely no faith in Crompton. It's not his fault, he simply wilts under the pressure of being a starting college QB. I ain't mad at the kid. It's not his fault Kiffin keeps feeding him to the lions every week. Kiffin knew that he would have to take up for his QB's no matter what this year because he knew they were probably going to perform poorly. Stephens probably would play poorly too. Those guys just have never demonstrated the ability to play well on the big stage of SEC football. I think it was Jonathan Swift who said, "You can't make a silk purse out of sow's ear". Kiffin is just going to bite the bullet and do the best he can with the bad QB situation he inherited from CPF. I never thought I would long for the days when Rick Clausen was our starting QB but you know what.......I kinda do.

I believe this is an excellent level headed evaluation. I believe CLK wanted to get some reps with the passing game and switched to the run after halftime so he could win the game. I believe he held some people out to get well for Auburn.

I now think we have to trust CLK and stomach Cromp. All the bellyachin' in the world isn't going to grow us a Qb this year.

You didn't see Thompson because he didn't play as he's nursing some back pain. Greg King filled in and started for him, a true freshman, which will give him great experience for the future.

For me, last night was the most fun I've had watching a UT game since 06. I couldn't attend due to my dad's 80th birthday, but I had a blast watching the feed (and posting to the game thread). Crompton's wild play had me on the edge of my seat (you just never know what is going to happen), our running game was thrilling, and the leaky defense made for high drama. And those announcers were so comical I couldn't stop laughing all night. Plus we got a "W" out of it.

So I am not stressing about the game at all. Just some darn good entertainment in my book.
