Been to a concert lately? How about giving e'rrybody a review?
WARNING... rant follows. Just something I have to get off my chest this morning.
One reason I am providing it is for those that might have bought a ticket for his upcoming Nashville show. Do yourself a favor and cash it in.
Last night the wife and I finally got to use the tickets that we bought 2 years ago for Roger Waters in Orlando. This was about as close as I could get to a Pink Floyd concert, so I HAD to go. I'll give you the good first. The stage was really cool. There was a super huge video screen that raised up and ran all sorts of PF stuff that you would have seen in the giant 'eye' on the other tours. -And then there were the other videos...
- They did some of the old songs that were pretty well done... Sheep, Run Like Hell were probably the best of the old stuff... actually they were excellent. Wish You Were Here and Mother were.. meh. There were a giant sheep and a giant pig flying around the arena which was really fun. Those were excellent.
Now the bad
The sound mixer was horrible. The lower end was so muddy that it buried any of the guitar playing and Water's vocals (which could best be described as 'weak'). Up on that big screen they occasionally showed the players up close and when they showed him playing an acoustic guitar, I remarked to my wife that his left hand was slow and disjointed. He might have been playing, but we weren't hearing what he was playing.... and I noticed one of the other musicians was playing an acoustic as well. I can't prove it was a Milli Vanilli moment, but it sure looked like it. Anyway... He opened the show with these statements on the jumbo screen. "blah blah please turn off your cell phones". And then: "If you love Pink Floyd, but don't care for my politics, please retire the **** to the bar".
.... and that was just the beginning of an incessant stream of uber-leftist bullcrap.
He opened the music with a complete hatchet job of Comfortably Numb. He sang both parts, and made the D major Gilmour part (which is the bright part of the song) sound dark and awful.. No guitar solos at all. Horrible. After that he did a couple of his songs and whined about how terrible America is (with accompanying videos) and basically called ALL presidents starting with Reagan "War Criminals", including the current douchenozzle (at least he was consistent). HIS solo songs were/are boring and seemingly uninspired. He did the final cut from the Final Cut, and it... well... sucked. His songs certainly aren't good for an arena concert. In a small venue it might have been OK if you like his brooding writings, but all in all they were terrible choices for this venue. The musicians were O...K.... but not great... certainly not what you would expect. The Money solo was probably the guitarist's bright spot, but that was about it. Again, everything was buried in the muddy lower end sound mixing.
Bottom line... If you are a PF fan, have a few bourbons, put on the headphones and que up Pulse. PF is dead. It KILLS me to finally admit that, but it is true. My wife remarked that it was obvious why Gilmour, Mason and Wright (RIP) left this clown. What's too bad is that his good writings... are the best of the Floyd. But his other stuff? just terrible.
Unless you are an American hating wanker, don't waste your money. Go see The Alan Parsons Project if they are ever in your neck of the woods. Great sound, great songs....
