Well, according to Crump's tweet, it isn't too bad.

I'm not sure many of those complaining in this thread even know what HIPPA is or why it prevents you from releasing details.

You're an extremely reliable poster, keep up the good work...even if some on here give you hell for professionalism.

Hope all involved in whatever happened are alright.

Best post in this thread. (Except for the one saying everyone's ok...I hope)

What is HIPPA?

It's a federal law that says if health care providers release medical information without a patient's consent the health care providers get drawn and quartered. Zasnow has nothing to worry about unless he's a health care provider.

For those asking about HIPAA...

The HIPAA Privacy Rule establishes national standards to protect individuals’ medical records and other personal health information and applies to health plans, health care clearinghouses, and those health care providers that conduct certain health care transactions electronically. The Rule requires appropriate safeguards to protect the privacy of personal health information, and sets limits and conditions on the uses and disclosures that may be made of such information without patient authorization. The Rule also gives patients rights over their health information, including rights to examine and obtain a copy of their health records, and to request corrections.

The Privacy Rule

Praying everyone is OK.

Putting an exclamation at the end of the title is going to make everyone panic. Especially if it involves the ER. Everyone has a right to panic

Zas is nearly always spot on, and is very professional when relaying information. Nothing non-professional about a little over dramatization now and then :)

Basically, you can't share information(patient name, diagnosis, etc.) regarding patients. It is a crime. HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Everyone in the healthcare field is very familiar with it.

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

It is a law that holds a person and the institution they work for financially (and potentially criminally) responsible for the release of health and injury information without a person's permission. That information can range from revealing injury specifics all the way to something as seemingly harmless as confirming they're in the hospital. People lose jobs over it.

How else would he have known about the players being there and at the same time referred to the rules? Telling a bunch of football fans about what might very well be a "boo boo" is not worth losing his job.

But HIPAA only applies to health care providers and certain insurance carriers. Why does it apply in this case?

Because the info is not allowed to be distributed until it is released by the patient.
