Multiple Defense

I'm hopeful that Wilcox is able to confuse opposing QBs more with the increased versatility and depth of the defensive players.

My main concern is stopping the run. If you can't consistently stop the run in the SEC, without committing 8 players into the line of scrimmage box, the defense will get pushed around and eventually beat up. This is where our lack of numbers at DT could become a problem by mid-October.

I'm sure they were and I think that would be an Awsome backfield but my statement was that at some point for about two weeks waggner lost his starting job to a freshman.

We talkin bout practice! Not a game! Not a game!

Why would the coaches start Waggner or anyone else for that matter if they didn't believe they were the best? We have some real empty geniuses posting things on this board like they know more than the coaches. Another genius is glad Reveiz is gone. I am sure glad our coaches don't listen to some of the blather we get here.

Waggner got beat out for starting corner spot by a freshman. Tells me all I need to know about how the coaches feel about him.

Oh yeah I remember that game where Coleman started over Waggner. Sarcastically speaking of course. I also remember Marcus Jackson starting over Bullard in the spring game, tells me all I need to know about Bullard. Kick him off the team. Sarcastically speaking of course. And don't tell me it's because he was working at center, I know that. Just like Waggner was working at safety and nickel. The coaches like their versatility so they work them and different positions and let the young guys come in and see what they can do against the ones. I don't consider that losing a starting spot, especially since there have been no games to start yet, but hey keep connecting those dots, I hear it's all the rage.

Waggner was opportunistic last year for those 5 ints. He wasn't a lock down corner. However, if he's starting over Moore, Lanier, Coleman, Gordon, Evans, et al, I would assume that he has continued to improve his game.

There aren't 10 honest to goodness lockdown corners I can think of in college football.

There aren't 10 in the NFL either. A lockdown corner is the rarest animal in football. The rules are written to make passing a consistent part of the games.

There sure aren't 2 guys other than Waggner that were lock down corners taht Waggner had to beat out. Criticism of Waggner based on the fact he got burned last year a couple of times is misplaced. Everyone gets burned a few times. Stephen Gilmore is a potential first rounder at SC, and he got lit up last year by Tennessee.

Agreed. Most people can agree that Waggner is not your first choice for safety but he's a good maybe even better than average corner. I have a feeling this D will be a gamble style D anyway that will give up some plays but will also excel in turnovers. Waggner will fit that mold well. We may not like all the outcomes but I'll bet he creates more turnovers this year, with that luck horse shoe and all.

Hubbs and Brice were on the Extra Sports coverage thing that channel 10 does after the Late Night News on Sundays. Waggner was definitely the starter on one corner over Lanier, and Coleman appeared to be the started at the other over Teague. However, they said that the corner competition is so stiff, that could flip multiple times between now and Montana kickoff, and could continue to switch after that. They said its so deep there compared to last year, they all are competing every single play like a game situation.

Even then, Da'Rick is burning everyone. Mentioned how he was calling the route in one on ones, and with everyone everytime and still getting open.

Maybe they should just let Rod Wilkes play all eleven positions. He alone is a lock down defense :D

The coaches are going to pick the guy they think gives us the best chance to win. If they are picking the wrong guy then we will see yet another coaching change in a few years. Our secondary is not very strong outside of JJ but should be much improved. I am hoping that the D-Line holds up long enough to get consistent pressure w/o having to blitz much. If we can do that our young guys will have a chance to make some plays.... As CDD said the other day, they will be better but no one knows if they will be good.
