'26 MS LB TJ White (Tennessee commit)

I think how our WRs play this year will show how good Pope is. We've had two straight years now of underperformance by the WR corps. People will try to put all the blame on the QB, but the WRs were making mistakes and dropping balls as well. If they underperform for a third straight year, that, IMO, will speak to Pope being a weakness as a coach. Recruiting wise, he's not done terrible. If he can pull off the Keys flip, then he's done pretty damn good. But you still have to coach the guys you bring in. We need to see better WR play this year.

CJH gets to review every practice, every game rep and interaction between those that throw and those that catch. Bet he has a pretty good root cause analysis on our ineffectiveness when it counts. The biggest variable change will be under center. This COULD answer a lot of questions. Having faith that the QB can make the reads, process AND get the ball out of his hands with SOME consistency has always been important. That synergy has been missing. A lessor physically gifted guy with some gamer instincts can make both rooms look better. That is what I expect to see this fall. Easier to catch when you are rewarded for a good route with an ontime ball in stride. Bet running in space and not seeing the ball in a catch radius turns up the nerves when you are the target. Time MAY tell.

LB play was very good considering we lost a veteran there after 4 games.

Arion Carter stepped up huge. I think Telander has a bad taste in his mouth and will bounce back.

Spillman and Harmon are two guys that expect to play a lot. Burns a has some ability, but Harmon is who I’m most excited about.

Telander has to get better playing in space. I don’t know if that’s a foot speed/athleticism thing or if it’s more easily corrected than that.

How many teams in power 4 conferences last year used more than 7 WRs for meaningful snaps?
That’s not the point…the point is we are no matter what having to play wr’s who have not seen meaningful snaps yet, and are 1-2 injuries away from having to have walkons get snaps

That’s ridiculous. Addition by subtraction. Our most talented players were our youngest WR’s, and they’ll now be on the field.
If they were more talented…why weren’t they seeing the field last year?

No we’re not. If Mike Matthews and Braylon Staley get hurt, then we have 5 more scholarship guys who will divide snaps.

Yes, it is the point. Nobody uses more than 7 WRs in a season, so no, we’re not looking at walk-ons getting snaps during meaningful minutes.

Regardless, we will be playing wr’s who have no experience whatsoever. We dont know how good Stayley/Jefferson/Matthews will be, because they have yet to play meaningful reps

That is correct. And if that is your stated concern, I get it. But that has nothing to do with depth (number of scholarship bodies) or what the coaches did or did not do in the off-season. That was going to be the case regardless. If you get a portal guy, he’s also in his first year in this system. And in the spring portal, there just wasn’t anybody they liked. Austin Price said multiple times that they liked Trey Weary, a walk on, better than many of the guys in the portal, so I go pay for someone when you already have that guy as a walk on?

The coaches know what they have. We don’t. They stood pat for a reason.

For years, fans on this board have complained that we don’t play young guys. Now the coaches have decided to go with the young and talented guys, but that’s not good either. You can’t win with our fans.

I’m really excited about this bunch, especially Matthews, Staley, Smith, and Jackson.

I’ll take their unknown potential over another year of Nimrod and Webb and uncoordinated Squirrel.

Dang. I feel sorta bad for MSU.
According to On3 there are 12 FOUR stars
And 2 FIVE stars in Mississippi this year at not a one of them are going to Miss State.

Womack and Keys alone would make MSU competitive in the SEC, but neither one is trying to stay in “The Sipp”

Someone could write a book on that subject. In this league, you better have seasoned veterans playing well and not relying on young snotty nosed underclassmen. The portal has magnified this issue.

As a Mississippi native. I hate the phrase "The Sip". Seems like it was started by Kiffin, who doesn't know anything about Mississippians. It's not cool. I've never met a person who thinks it's cool. Even Ole Miss fans are like "yea that's kinda gay"

Are St. fans confident in Lebby? To go from good/solid under Mullen and Leach to the bottom sucks.
