Mr. Johnny Cash

Much better song writers than Cash, but Cash owned every song that he did in a manner that no one else could. Every song he sang was delivered in a way that no other artist could, if that makes any sense. You believed and hung on his every word. That is what puts Cash ahead of everyone else IMO
This. He wrote a lot of songs but most of them are forgettable or formulaic. He's a much better performer than songwriter.

Johnny's cover of Hurt = best song by a country singer. Ever.

Can't believe it has been 9 years.

Guthrie is right there with him. Close call, IMO. Man I love Woody Guthrie too, talk about influential.. Dylan idolized Guthrie if that tells y'all anything.

As do a lot of people who are a lot more current than Dylan that fall any where near the "folk" category (even though I've heard people who are more rock and roll than anything claim the same thing). I know that Justin Townes Earle can get through an interview without mentioning Guthrie a few times.

I knew Johnny from spending time at his house on weekends. My friend's father was his chief of security.

Johnny was a salt of the earth man. He did not see him as any different than anyone else. His house was originally built for Elvis, but Elvis decided to move back to Memphis, so Johnny bought the house. Barry Gibb bought the home from Johnny's estate and it burned to the ground about three years ago.
