i'm not sure if you want to do this but you can find programs on line where you can take the songs from itunes and put them into a music folder on your computer. winamp does it and then there are other generic programs that do the same thing.

iTunes music files are on a folder on your computer. On XP, under default settings:

My Documents > My Music > iTunes

Just make sure your files are ripped as mp3's, and there's no reason they shouldn't play on any other player. The only thing you can't play on other stuff if anything purchased from the iTunes store.

you could also burn itunes songs to a music CD, then rip the cd back onto your computer using WMP or other music ripping program.

Yep although I think you can only burn them as .wav files? Then you can rip them back as mp3.

Anyone know if you can burn DRM iTunes files as mp3?

the only way, other than paying for software that is probably illegal, is to burn itunes songs to a music CD and then rip them to mp3 format. I've done this several times without any problem. You have to manually input artist/song info, but that's no biggie. I'm no audiophile, so the ripped mp3s sound fine to me and I don't notice any problems when they're then burned to another CD.

Files purchased off of iTunes are in a locked format, and cannot be converted to mp3 or anything else.

Don't give Apple crap for it, there are plenty of other companies who do it, too.

Oh snaps. Never tried it.

Because I've never purchased iTunes files. :p

I just take my iTunes gift cards and sell them for a fraction of their face value.

If you re-rip songs from a CD, you might consider ripping them as Windows Media Audio files (.wma) instead of mp3s. I think wma files are smaller so your player would hold more songs.

nope, other way around. 128kps mp3 songs average about 3mb/song for a 3min song. Under the .wma format (lossless, variable bitrate, etc) they can average nearly 10mb/song. Plus, .wma isn't supported by every portable music player (Sony comes to mind).

* adjusts dunce cap * Thanks, MG. Ignore my post everyone.

edit: However, I have several classical music CDs ripped to my computer at work for background music. They are wma files, but they are definitely not 10 Mb/min in size...not even close. 1 Mb/min or a little less is what I'm seeing.
