and what about an mp3 encoder? to convert different bitrates etc, the same?

Yup. Does it all. If you have a copy of Nero, Nero Wave Editor does that too... I like it better than Audacity.

I used to use dbpoweramp but it looks like they have gone to a 30 day trial model. It used to be freeware.

as for the mp3 joiner, I was looking for one that will join without re-encoding. Audacity seems to want to re-encode which will take forever.

I'm not even sure if that is possible. I'll see if Wave Editor works like that...

As for the joiner, I "found" a copy of MP3 Splitter and Joiner that does what I was looking for. Now I just need to solve the encoding issue. Dbpoweramp did it really fast just by right clicking on the file. Audacity takes forever just to load the file. Not sure if that's the fastest way or or not.

Wave Editor would be the same way. "long" mp3s take quite some time to open. I say that for ones that are like 10 mins... I'm sure the ones you speak of are a lot longer.
