I need assistance from fellow vol fans that know anything about living in Memphis. I just accepted a job today that will require me to move to Memphis. I have never been and have no clue about the city other than we beat there ass the last 2 years in bball! Any assistance would be great! Where to live, where not to live, ect. A little about myself I will be working in the east side (humphries blvd). Want to keep the commute easy and short. Just a young single guy so just need an apartment at this time. Thank you for any assistance you can offer!!!

Look for a Condo on Riverside Dr. downtown..Good times down there.
He's working on Humphries near Germantown Parkway and you're telling him to live downtown? Put that drink down my friend. Plenty of apartments and condos in the immediate vicinity of the workplace. Robbie just likes to party downtown, which is a good place to party, but as they say not a place I would like to live. You're in Southaven Robbins, what's wrong with that? :eek:lol:

Well, when I lived there 8 years ago, Cordova was a good option. I've heard that it has gotten a little less desirable, but there are some nice apartments around there. I lived in the Reserve at Dexter Lake and Appling Lakes. Germantown is, and will probably continue to be (given the police presence), nice and affluent. My wife lived in the apartments at TPC Southwind. You can also go further East into Collierville, which is (as I've heard) now "the" place to live.

Advice on town? Be careful where you park if you go downtown or to the malls, as car theives are a-plenty. Much of downtown has been redone since I left, and the areas around the ballpark, the Peabody, and the Gibson factory/museum have a lot to offer. There's always good music on Beale. Eat at Rendezvous.

Thanks for all input guys!! Keep it coming!! Definetly don't wanna live downtown myrobbins just hit the nightlife! Orangeempire gas is on its way to $5/gal so would be silly to commute! Rasputin Vol someone told me about the state income tax today I guess that puts more $ in your pocket. I never knew that. I'm orginally from MN and been in KY the last few years. Kiddiedoc..Cordova is popping up a lot when I search online. Thanks again guys!!

Olive Branch, MS or Collierville, TN might be cheaper places to live. You're a little further from downtown, but it is Memphis we're talking about.

Mississippi also has state income tax.

Since you're at Humphries and G'town you will be paying quite a bit for rent. With the housing market making plenty of affordable homes available, I would recommend talking with an agent about buying a home in East Memphis. Do not buy in Cordova.

Not sure of your price range, but if you are dead set on an apartment, there are plenty very close to the area you will be working. If you go that route I'd recommend signing a 6 month lease and using that time to figure out where you really want to live.

Thanks IE..I will have to go with an apartment for a number of reasons: will not be able to explore places to live before hand due to the job and the training I will have to attend. So I will be deciding on a place to live without seeing it in person. I also will be renting at first because I may be relocating again in a few years.

I lived in the Reserve at Dexter Lake and Appling Lakes.

I don't know about the Reserve, but I was very happy with Appling Lakes. I lived there for 3 years and I'd recommend them to anyone. If anything they may be a tiny bit more pricey than others in that area, but nothing outlandish.

nothing wrong with cordova if you want to rent there. There are a ton of apts along germantown parkway, however there is a ton of EVERYTHING along that road so traffic is plentiful.

I love it here, people who talk about bring a gun and stuff only know Memphis from what they hear on the news. Or they did something to piss someone off and got scared and wished they had a gun. Either way, it's a great city.
