to how we might attack FL this weekend...

i think what we are likely to see is a similar game plan we saw against Alabama last year.

i've been saying it, and nothing changes, the match up is when our offense is on the field. Against an aggressive man up defense, there are going to be opportunities, and we're going to have to be patient.

we will run the ball to an almost annoying level i'm betting, but we have to. and we have to run right at them. i'll be curious to see what we do to mix it up on 1st downs. if we continually get in to 2nd and 3rd and long situations, that'll be the tell tale sign of things going bad.

i don't see us going lateral against this defense, they can match speed. but if they're going to go upfield, so should we. i think we might actually see a lead blocker, even if it's Hurd when Dobbs keeps.

on the passing game, there will be opportunities, not sure how many, but they will play man, and they will blitz. so our WR's and TE's need to win 1 on 1's more than they lose, and continue to show the fight to come down with the 50/50 balls. Croom could be a tough match up for a LB or Safety. can't let the DB's get inside.

when we find ourselves in the redzone, we have to get TD's. play calling in the redzone will be important.

in this game, patience will be the key, then being opportunistic.


Defensively, make them one dimensional. make Applbey win it. so first and foremost, stop the run....brilliant? right?

our D line is going to have play well on the run, and LB's fill holes and make it like running in to a brick wall.

secondary can't give up big plays, period. i mean period.

Special teams....need Medley to be solid, can't afford misses in this game. and punt team needs to be on fire to keep them backed up. field position may be a huge factor here, so i expect our coverage units to hold serve, as they've been pretty darn good.

but it's about time for our return teams to make a difference.

unless there's some NOTD's in this game, eitiher way, i don't see this being a high scoring game.

i think we have a good shot at winning, i really do. we just can't have the miscues we've had in the 1st three games. all that stuff that everyone says needs to be tidied up, needs to be taken care of.

if we do that, we can win this game something like 24-16. if we don't, and turn it over, and FL gets a lead, it'll be difficult to come from behind against that defense if we get predictable offensively.

this is the game where those that can make plays, need to make them. need some of these guys to step up and be "that guy". aside from all the above....at the end of the day, when YOU have an opportunity to make a play.......make it.

don't drop interceptions. don't drop TD passes. Fight for the ball. don't miss a tackle.

agreed. there's no forcing against this defense.

throw it away, take a sack...DO NOT turn it over.

thanks. i'm not gonna lie, as much as i liked the play calling last year against FL for 3 & 1/3 quarters...i've not seen anything this year to get excited about.

my biggest issue is the 1st down offense. we can't make up our mind what we want to be it seems like, and we're not creating enoough mis matches.

which is something this offense is supposed to do with all the motions and reads you can get out of the same formation. we just haven't seen a ton of that so far this year.

Frankly, beating Floriduh requires first downs. Own the time of possession. Don't enter the 4th with the Vols defense gassed. Flip that around. Let UF's D be running on fumes.

The Vols need to score on most possessions, preferably TDs. Owning the ball for 35-39 minutes and only amassing 12 points is likely too thin to hold up.

Don't turn the ball over. Force the Gayduhs to make mistakes. Score when they do.

Somebody who has just been a promising name on the roster needs to step up and announce themselves this coming Saturday. One or more Vols need to be the guy for whom Floriduh didn't plan.

Play calling has been severely lacking this year. That can change from week to week if we have been holding back. Dobbs looks good when he has time to throw, and has been hitting Malone consistently this year. What will make or break us this game will be how well the O line is prepared.

It is about running up the gut and using Hurd as a lead blocker. He has the body for it.

And Dobbs cannot make bad decisions in pass game. If he does, uf's defense will score more than their offense.

I think that we need to keep the Florida D on the field and wear them out by pounding the ground game, along with a few passes into the flats and one or two deep balls to keep them honest.

only if the flow of the game dictates it. if we're moving the ball better than i currently imagine, and we can get them guessing defense, then there would be an opportunity to do so.

i do not think that this will be THE game plan. i think we'll see an Alabama like plan from last year. patient.

what we don't want to do is go 3 and out a lot like we did against VT. that spells doom.

we have to posses the ball. and that means being productive on 1st down as much as we can.

now, if we get some good production in the passing game on 1st down, i can see a couple opportunities go up tempo on 2nd and short to try and get a big play.

but again, that will be the exception, and dictated by situation. and even then, i don't know that we'll do it.

Hurd will get his carries. but Dobbs will have to as well. and on designed draws, i can't imagine we'll send him with out a little help out front.

i'm still not sure i'm 100% in the camp that "we're saving it for FL". i could be wrong, but 3 games in, is a long time to play it close to the vest.

and even if we were, it still doesn't excuse the poor play up front, or the mental errors the players have had.

clean all that up, maybe have some new things in the game plan. but i honestly believe we're going to be very patient on offense.

it will probably annoy many fans..

agreed. i think that is one thing that may get re-introduced this week. Tyler Byrd or Josh Smith possibly being the sweep guy.

it may not make a huge difference though if FL plays disciplined...that sweep is an effort to get the defense to show it's hand. Personnel wise, FL may be able to stand pat, play it man up, and not worry about it.

but if it gets them matched up against an LB, that could be something we take advantage of for those 6-8 yard type plays we're gonna need to move the chains.

maybe not. we haven't really yet, as i inferred, but in the interest of "new" things we could see, that could be one of them, that's not awfully hard to install.

but especially considering how inept our O line has been at opening holes, getting hit at the LOS on a running play isn't a plan for success.

couple of situations that this could happen:

1. if we got a good kick or punt return and have good field position, could try to hit them quick if productive on 1st down.
2. after a turnover, and again, if field position is in our favor.
3. it could change w/in a series as well, if we hit a big play down field or something...could see us change it up mid stream, again with field position, and down/distance being in our favor.

it's about opportunities. i think a lot of this game may be frustrating offensively, but there will be some opportunities, it will be interesting to see if we can take advantage of them. whether or not we go tempo....eh, like i said, situations may provide the opportunity. not sure if we will.

if down and distance favor it, and we can get the right look defensively, big pass rush, obvious passing downs where they might blitz, i do expect to see some of this.

as a matter of it being the plan, i don't know that it will work a ton, simply because of their speed sideline to sideline. but situationally, yes, this can be effective.

we just can't go lateral all the time. throwing or running, we need to go North and South more times than not.

as for the mis direction....i think that may come in to play with that jet sweep action. but again, you can get too cute with stuff like that against a fast, strong defense.
