Went to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes last night.
I pride myself on avoiding awful movies in the theatre. I read many reviews and do my homework before I spend money at the theatre. This movie slipped through the cracks. It is easily one of the WORST movies I have seen in the last 5 years. Completely wastes two great actors in Franco and Lithgow, and has a completely predictable narrative. Even a good portion of the dialogue can be predicted before it is spoken.
Many of the most tense portions of the action resulted in the audience busting out loud with laughter because the scenes were so ridiculous and unrealistic.
If you are into mindless/thoughtless cinema and just want to sit and munch your popcorn while you waste away a summer afternoon then this movie may have some redeeming quality to it. (Also, Freida Pinto is beautiful, but she doesn't count as a redeeming quality because they don't use her for anything other than to have a female presence)
I prefer films that provoke thought, have good performances from the actors, and surprise the audience. This movie does none of the three. Mix in the socio awareness sub topic of how wrong it is to do research on animals and you have a true liberal Hollywood summer blockbuster.
