The first half felt very uneven and the Jay-Z music took me right out of the 1920's setting (i noticed he was an executive producer in the credits which explained that odd choice). The second half settled in and Leo took over. Toby Maguire was average but Joel Edgerton did great as Tom.

8.5/10. It was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Unlike his horrible Romeo and Juliet, the musical choices actually added to the setting. It kept it exciting.

I thought ole Tobby did a great job also.

One of his better movies if you haven't seen it I recommend it for a weekend movie day

White House Down - 6/10

I must have missed something, but when the hacker is escaping, why did his key card fail to get him past the explosives he'd set up in the tunnel?

I can't tell if I really didn't like that movie or if it just couldn't live up to Olympus Has Fallen standards.

Let's see, where do I start? Leo saying "old sport" every 5 seconds, rap music in the 1920s, Mcguire's creepy fascination with Gatsby, painfully slow and meandering storyline, and the plot in general.

It looks great but feels empty and convoluted

A few of my most recent:

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire 6.5/10- Really enjoyed the first one, so i was looking forward to this. I was disappointed. Everything seemed rushed and felt lacking.

Hall Pass 5/10: Some funny parts, but overall, a really dumb concept and plot.

Turbo 7/10: Cute movie we watched with our son. Neat concept and the animation was really good. Cheesy of course, but overall, a solid kids movie.

Yeah it wasn't very good at all. It had very few laughs and was really just kinda dumb.

There were a string of those the last 2-3 years or so. Hall Pass, The Change-Up, The Watch. All had people in it who's movies I had laughed at in the past, but those were all blah.

That would be Baz Luhrmann. He did Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge. You will find these same qualities in all of his movies, including using contemporary music in non-contemporary settings. It's disorienting and I find it messes with the context of the film. I think your opinion sums up the movie pretty well.

I feel that Vince Vaughan, Adam Sandler, Owen Wilson, Ben Stiller, and Jim Carrey have drowned themselves out, especially Adam Sandler. His movies just aren't funny anymore.

Speaking of Vince Vaughan....I wish he'd do more serious movies to show his talent. Couple of years back, I caught a movie he was in where he was a serial killer. It was really intense & he showed a very nasty side to acting of which we don't get to see from him much if at all.

R&J was set in the present so the music actually worked pretty well in it. Moulin Rouge did adapt contempoary music in a victorian setting but the style of the songs still worked in the context of the film.

The rap music in Gatsby was very forced into the setting. I'm sure it was due in no small part because Jay-Z was an executive producer.

I'm a fan of rap music but it fid not fit the film.
