I'm sorry if this thread has already been made. Who would you say is the most irreplaceable defensive player? I would have to say Darrin Kirkland jr. If he stays healthy, I think he's all-sec.

Trevor Daniel. It takes all eleven defensive players on every play to shut down the pass and run. I hope they are all taking care of business. The last two years Trevor Daniel has saved our bacon by backing up the opponents offense and putting them in an easier position for the defense to apply pressure. I hope Trevor has an all-American season.

And, the best defense is a great scoring offense. If we can get 21 quick points and keep applying scoring pressure on the opponent, it makes our defense a lot more lethal and able to hide a flaw here or there. Also tends to get the 12th man fired up and really loud too.

I agree that we need it to be someone on the DL, but honestly, the entire defense needs to take it to the next level. We have to plug the holes up front and stop letting teams run it down our throats. LB play was very poor last season. LBs could not shed blocks, little penetration, and not very good in pass defense. The secondary was abysmal. They could not cover anyone, fundamentally unsound, took terrible angles, and rarely came up to make big plays. We have got to tighten it up on defense and keep our offense in games. Vice versa too.

My player would be Kongbo or Taylor.

I agree. I even put him in my "cone of protection" in that post. But, I will also pick a true defensive player and that has to be - Darrin Kirkland Jr. He calls the defensive plays and lines everybody up pre-snap. He is by far UTs best LB(I hope Bituli lives up to the hype, tho) and I expect him to have a 100+ tackle season, with about 5 sacks,3 picks, 5 forced fumbles and 4 fumble recoveries. In other words, an All-SEC type of season

That's what we need from at least one LB. Front 4 eating up blocks and linebackers cleaning up. Don't want some safety leading the team in tackles.

Gaulden was our 2nd best defensive player last year. Nobody has shown they can best him so I will go with Gaulden.

Considering what happened last year at DT... I'll say....pick a DT, any DT , n the two deep...

I'm stretching my neck out there and saying Bituli as well. I really do think he is going to be dominant. He has that natural quick twitched instinct that great players have.

I am going to mention a freshman. On defense he seems to be one of those more physically ready to play early, talented enough to vie for time, and he lines up where returning players might still be recovering from injury.

At DT, Eric Crosby. He might have arrived a little heavy (if I remember correctly), but nowhere near as heavy as Kahlil was. I also think Kivon Bennett could check many of the same boxes, but just throwing it as a blind guess, I will go with Crosby.

I believe it is not arguable that the defense at the first of the year was much better against better teams than the last part of the season against weaker teams. The big difference was the less talented and younger players who had to play at the end of the year. The reserves at times seemed not to know assignments and gave up several big plays to weak opponents. When several starters came back in the bowl game, the D was much better. Funny how that works.

The FAHR BUTCH crowd will say that injuries are no excuse. They have a point in that Butch is responsible to build enough depth, have an effective S&C program and play reserves more early on meaningful snaps to get them ready for replacing injured starters. I believe he is addressing the first 2 items with recruiting and hiring a top notch S&C coach. Playing reserves early to give them experience is a wait and see.

So, the most valuable defensive player is not one person, but is actually not having to play several 3rd and 4th string players at the same time and having LB and DE sized kids playing DT as was happening at the end of last year. JMO
