Most underutilized Vol?

Without Fulmer, Witten would have never seen the offensive side of the ball at all. He was recruited as a DE out of high school. We had injuries at TE and he got moved over and made the most of it.

Witten had to split touches with the likes of Dante Stallworth, Travis Stephens, Gerald Riggs Jr, Leonard Scott, Cedric Houston, Kelly Washington. That’s tough sledding to say he was under utilized when there was so much other talent on the team.
Leonard Scott
If he was on the field, you knew it was going to be an end around to the "speedster" that would take 30 seconds to develop. And if the spectator knew it, the opposing defense was surely focused on it. Did that play ever work?

Very true. And our offense in 2001 was anything but "pathetic." Some fans simply aren't very football smart............

Going way back in time...

In the mid-70's, quarterback Pat Ryan sat on the bench for some woeful Vol teams. He had 70 pass attempts over four years.

Pat then went on to have a 14 year career in the NFL; mostly with the N.Y. Jets.

Was having this discussion with another Vol fan. We tried to pick out the Vol who was the least used or most improperly used during his time at UT.
We came up with these three.

The Kamara underutilized narrative is overblown. He was slightly underused, but not to the degree many Vol fans claim. A) He was banged up a lot and B) He wasn't a feature back. Hurd was an every down type. Even in the NFL, Kamara isn't getting all the carries.

I'd go with Witten.

Ding ding ding! I remember the goobers on another board explaining to me that Witten was "triple teamed on every play" when in reality he was a victim of Fulmer's pathetic offense.
2001 Washington, Stallworth , Witten....who you targeting the most?

This is who I had in mind. In the modern pass happy era Pat would have been a three year starter with all sorts of records awaiting Manning to break them. Well maybe not with the likes of the receivers we had after Stanley Morgan left.

We weren’t going anywhere that season. We were in the midst of play 5 consecutive top 10 teams. Just run wildcat the rest of the season with Pig Howard if you have to. The first game action of Dobbs’ career were #1 Alabama, #9 Missouri, #9 Auburn. That’s not how you setup a true freshman QB for success. I don’t care what the situation was, he shouldn’t have played in 2013. Once we got to that portion of the schedule, there was no reason to throw him in there. And the same thing happened the following season. Didn’t play him until Alabama. Should’ve started him from the beginning of the season in 2014.
I mean no one is going to disagree about the second point on 2014. I doubt butch was going to just not use a QB for like 5 games in his first season at UT. We can all say he's dumb, or whatever, but he wasn't that dumb. Dobbs was the only option, so he played. It's that simple.

Can we list every name from the Jones era that didn't get drafted, but went on to have good pro careers?

Surely, they all could be characteristized as "underutilized" in some way.

Underrated Example: Jakob Johnson has been a solid contributor to Bill Belechik's team for 4 years now. I know college doesn't use FB's very much anymore, but surely Jones could have found something for him to do when he was here instead of being a 4th string linebacker?

Alvin Kamara. However....hear me out here...

Juan Jennings was originally recruited as QB here along with Quinton Dornandy who was a bust and i thought that we should have brought him in more in special designed plays at QB thought his career and given him a fair qb competion against Gurantano even after Dobbs left. We desperately needed a winner at QB again.

The guy was just a game changer with the ball in his hands period. Happy for him with his nfl career though and that probably worked out better for him focusing on WR only. But i haven't seen a football player at Tennessee more determined to win ball games by himself since maybe Al freakin Wilson. Imagine him as a dual threat QB straight up running through guys.
