Do not get on me for this choice? Montori Hughes when he played with heart was a beast. Not sure but I think he was a 2 star.

from the 80's, Dale Jones. IIRC, he was a Juco pick-up.

He, Leonard little, al Wilson are the best playmakers I've seen for tn. The delongs as well. I remember Keith had like 22 tackles in one game once.

That group from '84-'88 with Dale Jones, Carl Zander, Keith DeLong, Darrin Miller, and Kelly Ziegler was a nice crop. I know Zander was the first to graduate ('84 I think) but UT had a great stretch of LB's.

Inky didn't do a lot... Very inspirational, but not a game changer or anything while he was healthy..

OP asked for someone who was not highly recruited, but worked their butt off to give his all for Tennessee. Due to his unfortunate injury, Inky did not accumulate a big stat sheet. In the time he did play, he played well, much much better than his 2-star rating. Inky deserves to be on this list.

Currently I'm going with Brian Randolph. First time he hit the field last year as a true freshman I thought I was looking at a freshman Erik berry. Only berry was a 5* all world recruit and Randolph was a 3*. Dudes gonna be a baller

I can only speak to the modern era, and not sure how highly some of these guys were ranked coming out of HS, but a few names come to mind:

Ariane Foster
Charlie Garner (Juco)
Dale Carter (Juco)
Fuad Reveiz (yes, a kicker)
Al Wilson
Jamal Lewis
Travis Henry
Reggie White

Johnny Majors, J.J.McClesky, Dale Jones, Fuad Reveiz, Reggie Cobb, James (Little Man) Stewart, The Colquittian horde, Steve DeLong, Bob Johnson, Larry Seivers, Jackie Walker, Al Wilson outperformed their supposed potential by a mile. I wanna say Steve Kiner...but don't remember reading about his recruitment. Travis Stevens, too.

Back in the olden days....guys like Cafego(W.Va.), Suffridge (Knoxville), Feathers (Bristol), Hickman (Johnson City) Wyatt (Kingston) and some others were probably big national surprises... since you were supposed to come from Pa., Ohio, Illinois, or Texas in those days to be a good football player.

Most underrated recruit ever for Tennessee has to go to a coach.... Gen. Robert Neyland, though. Best. recruit. ever.

sorry but I'm not sure those would be considered underrated

Yeah I don't get the whole Inky thing. He played well when he was healthy but nothing amazing. I just remember the hit on Samardzija.

As of recently you have to put P.Wagner up there near the top. D.Moore would probably be #1 as of recent. He came in as the guy everyone thought was just a throw-in for the duo of him and Creer.

Pretty sure Denarius was not only a 4 star but one of the top 10-15 rated wideouts in the country.

I'm no recruiting guru but I think you're mistaken a little here. I believe most services had him a 3*. I think we really on got onto him because he had a hs teammate we were after. Maybe Lennon creer. G jones was rated much higher. Which goes to show how unpredictable these ratings can be

Yep you're right. Rivals had 3 star, Scout 4 star. But he was rated way lower than Paige and G Jones

At least by Rivals Moore was a 3* and the #34 WR.

Almost by definition one would think that the best people for this list would start out as walk ons. Being successful after not getting a scholarship is as underrated as it gets.

I'll probably get slammed for this but I think d young is gonna be a special player for us. He was 3* that people got all upset with Dooley for signing. The first punt he caught he almost took to the house. He's got sec speed

I don't know about slammed but it is a bit speculative to throw that name out on an "all time" list just yet. If he succeeds over time though you're right, there's going to be more than a little crow to be eaten around here by some.

You might be thinking of Gerald Jones. D.Moore was a 3* and wasn't super highly recruited.

Came in and had 2 200yd rec games in one season, UT career record.
