I just googled it. They say there are estimated to be 50 bears living in Mississippi.

It'd be a lot more authentic if they were called the Ole Miss Armadillos

They should go with their state's nickname...

The Fighting Magnolias!

or

The Hospitality Givers!

Ole Miss' mascot is a black bear. If there are black bears in Mississippi they're in a zoo. Very unoriginal.

Actually, you are incorrect . There are over a hundred there now, and the population is expanding rather rapidly.MDWFP - Black Bear Program.

MS was also once famous for its bear hunting. In fact, MS was where Roosevelt famously refused to kill a bear that Holt Collier had tied to a tree. A cartoon from the event was the inspiration for the Teddy Bear. Holt Collier was a famous bear hunting guide. He was also an ex-slave and a veteran of the Confederate Army. He went to war as a manservant, but he stayed in and fought for the south after his owner resigned for "medical reasons." Fascinating man. There's a great book about his life.

I think Bulldogs is the most common university nickname. Tigers has to be close. Volunteers is unique and underlying story is badass.

Ok, I said I was wrong. There's a whopping 60 bears in the state. It's a mascot that everyone can identify Mississippi with. Like the Colorado Buffalos and the Montana Grizzlies. The Mississippi Black Bears

I lost a lot of respect when the changed the name. Just pointing out that historically Mississippi was VERY much a famous state for black bears.

Out of all the nicknames/mascots in the SEC I still think "Gamecock" is the worst, for obvious reasons. Plus no one should have poultry as the symbol of their sports teams.

South Carolina's name is a reference to a Revolutionary War General.

Well the thread is specifically talking about the relevance of teams mascots. Black bears not relevant to Mississippi

Eastern Elk used to roam Tennessee but we killed them all. I'd hardly call it a relevant mascot to our state school

The Swamp Foxes would have been a good choice also. Honoring Francis Marion

Actually, if there's one state that should be called the Rebels, it's SC. Or maybe they could follow Stanford's lead and call themselves the Palmettos and have a tree as a mascot.

I'd counter it's simply because many have no knowledge of history as it's historically very relevant. As to elk in TN, we actually have an elk season in TN, and the herd is expanding.

The elk in Tennessee have been re-introduced from a population from New Zealand. Nobody thinks of Elk when they think of the state of Tennessee. It's not relevant. Even historically speaking it's of little relevance. Just like black bears in Mississippi. Even if Teddy Roosevelt shot a bear there once.

I think I am going to go with Ole Miss Road Kill Armadillos myself. Seems to be the normal way to find one.

That's incorrect. They come from New Brunswick. The elk in New Zealand are the Rocky Mountain sub-species. Still a North American elk, but a bit more distantly related. There was a thriving bear population in MS, and it was THE place to hunt them long after Davy Crockett was in the ground.

I hate Ole Miss.
Go Vols.
