Most overrated Vol

I'm still upset no one agreed with me about Robert Ayers being overrated!

Okay, here is one and I am going to absolutely cringe after I type it.

Peyton Manning.

Don't get me wrong, I actually really like the guy but his legacy and his reality at UT were two very disparate things.

Never beat Florida, destroyed by Nebraska, one SEC championship, lost to Memphis. As a student at UT I used to watch him in games and notice that when he was pressured or sacked it felt like the team just gave up on the whole series.

The guy was very very good, no doubt, but if we are talking about overrated (the difference between hype and performance) I think he should be on the list.

I know this is blasphemy but I would rather have Tee Martin (who exceeded expectations) than P. Manning who never quite lived up to the (unfair?) hype that was placed on him.

You shut your mouth when your talking to me!

I'm not a member of the mob, but I just assumed the entire board would attack you and burn you at the stake after that statement. I can only assume they are all so angry they are beating their wives over your comment. Give them a second to calm down, then the verbal onslaught will begin.

I can only imagine that you are correct.

If it makes anyone feel better he would certainly be on my "best Vol of all time" list.

I just think the UT fan base (all of us) create hype that no one can live up to. For instance, after all of the foaming at the mouth wondering who our next DC will be, if Randy Shannon is hired and any opposing team gets a first down, there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I refuse to speak ill of any OJ, it's not good for your health.

Ok. What about CJ's? Fayton, Fleming...or the one I'm actually thinking of...CJ Leak?

I know he wasn't hyped coming to UT, but he was coming out of HS when he signed with Wake Forest.

I like Fleming he was good.

Never mind I was thinking Troy, but still these guys were more recruiting busts than anything else. I wouldn't call them "overrated". When I think of someone as being overrated I think of someone like Robert Ayers who despite doing nothing for 4 years was a first round pick.

Compared to the unfair hype surrounding any QB ESPN wants to hop on these days, I think Peyton's hype was much more fair. I was willing to just ignore your comment.

Fayton was pretty good too. I was really just talking about Leak. Remember when Casey got hurt and Banks and Leak had to play? Leak was so slow and clumsy he looked like he was wearing cement boots. Pretty bad considering the way Casey ran.

I specified in the first post that it doesn't matter when they were overrated as a recruit or while at UT...

Robert Ayers? Si?

In a way, you're right, but I have a hard time saying it about Robert. His career was right in the middle of a huge mess. Offense that was so inept it couldn't keep the D off the field. Robert and his mates were gassed alot of the time.
