Most Important Hire

I still think Mullen is a big upgrade and someone we have a reasonable chance to hire if the big 3-5 names turn us down.

My 1st choice will always be Gary Patterson. I realize he probably aint leaving TCU but I'd make him turn down 7-8 million if not more

Not with the bafoon they have now.
That buffoon* just beat Florida on the road and Auburn at home. They likely will finish 9-3 and 2nd in the West with an array of offensive injuries and problems. I'd say that's decent for a first year coach.

in program history and have to get this one right. This program is in a lot better shape financially and on the field (despite recent results) than when Dooley or Butch took over. However, there will be a lot of fans taking a wait and see approach with the next hire and if UT goes the mid-major/bargain bin route again there will be a lot of potential for apathy, which this program cannot afford right now. Therefore, we need to at least swing for the fences with this hire and go after a Kelly or Stoops even if we don't land them to show the fanbase that the program is committed to trying to win. If we go for another mid-major type, then I think this just signals that the AD is all about the bottom line and doesn't care about winning.

With that being said, I see the following as the most likely options:
1. Venables
2. Norvell
3. Frost
4. Cooter

I have lost all faith in this program.

I used to be all in on Venables but really if you look at the numbers, meh. The only big hires are Gruden, Kelly, or Patterson. If you have to dip below that Frost is the only guy worth taking a risk on

Chip Kelly wouldn't work here. A dual threat offense will never work in the SEC. Plus we'd have to rebuild our roster. We run near the same offense as kelly ran, but without the players that fit in the system. For some reason Butch likes recruiting players that he knows aren't going to fit in the system. Ex. pro style quarterback in a spread read option scheme.

Is this serious or just trolling?

I've heard and read this sentiment routinely every time UT goes hunting the next coach. This hire won't break the program, but I agree that we need to hope that Currie and the program can finally entice a proven head coach to lead our program. While many claim the admin is cheap, I worry that the list of "name" coaching candidates who want to come to Knoxville isn't nearly as long and star studded as the fans want to believe. The area isn't for everyone. The SEC is a tough league to succeed in and the fans are rarely satisfied. Expectations, culture and the workload to win at the highest levels here will give many a coach a reason to pause on our job. If fans would take off the orange glasses and really consider our situation and how it looks to a coach like...say....Patterson, they might begin to see its not always just about the money. Hell, when you get to a certain point with income, it's more about comfort, lifestyle, family and generally being happy and content. Money becomes secondary. That's a fact that's often overlooked and ignored by many in our fan base. Bottom line is that I don't see Gruden, Kelly or Patterson in orange. I'm convinced it will, once again, go to an up and comer and it won't be because UT went cheap. I'm also pretty sure we will overpay this up and comer just to seal the deal with him just like we've done before.

If we do hire an up and comer we don't need to overpay. Let's not act like this isn't a desirable job because it is. Norvell, Brohm, etc, those guys would LOVE this job. Let's hope we can get lockdown a better option

We don't have a quarterback that fits the system though. Face it, Guarantano is not a dual threat. He had 200 yards rushing his Junior and Senior year and hasn't shown anything to say otherwise this year. That will still set us back 2-3 years even if we hire Kelly, to bring a quarterback in, learn the system, and be experienced enough to make a difference.

You don't know what you are talking about. Mariota went 12-1 as RS freshman. The QB just has to pick-up some yards on occasion to keep the defense honest, JG showed he could do that at times yesterday

I don't see any of those being hired, but who knows. I think we make a more expensive hire, just so currie can get the fan base to shut up.
1. Petrino
2. Les Miles
3. I could actually see JBC being offered the job. I just can't see him leaving the NFL.
4. Leach
Seriously? You're against a dual threat spread but you would see us bringing in someone like Leach? Do you even know the type of offense these guys run or are you flinging poo against the wall to see what sticks?

Brohm could cost as much as Kelly with his buyout.

Frost will be the next head coach at Nebraska. No way Riley makes its through this year and I'm hearing Frost is who they are going after.

Nebraska is Nebraska still. That isn't a top tier job. Recruiting is going to be a nightmare for whoever goes there.

Same could be said for Tennessee...

Just in the last few years, the state of Tennessee has transformed from a so-so state as far as recruiting goes. Now, middle TN is producing a lot of football talent. We are far from being a Florida, but with the talent we can get in-state, plus throw in a few from Georgia, Florida and surrounding states, and it's not such a bad gig any more.

I am not saying you can fall out of bed, and get talent, but it doesn't appear nearly as hard as it was even 10 years ago.

The fan base is not the problem. They have never coached a game and have been very supportive of the program regardless of the quality of coaching. UT is lucky to have such a passionate fan base after the last 15 years.

Spot on! Its like a poorly ran business and wanting to blame unhappy customers. Those blaming fans are tone deaf as it gets
