For those of you that think the current state of the Volnation football program is as bad as it can get, remember (or learn about) these games:

1979 - Rutgers 13, Vols 7
CJM's 3rd season
Rutgers' 3rd year in D1

1986 - Army 25, Vols 21
CJM's 10th season
Army lost to Northwestern, Wake, Rutgers, BC and Holy Cross (D1aa) that season.

1988 - Duke 31, Vols 26
CJM's 12
Dukies hadn't been ranked since 1961.
Beginning of the Evil Genius' run against us.

2008 - Wyoming 13, Vols 7
After CPF's firing but inexcusable.
Cowboys finished season 4-8 including a home loss to what would wind up 6-6 Bowling Green.

Won't even give last year's Ky details...

Tonight was disappointing for sure, but a 21 point win beats the heck out of those embarrassments.

Watch the film, learn from it, coach 'em up, and let's beat the Dawgs' arses!

The difference is that for most of those bad losses, there were no message boards for us to get on and gripe about coaches, players, etc. Bigger platform for us to blow things out of proportion these days. Nice work on the list btw.

Tonight wasn't terribly disappointing for me in terms of expectations, but it was yet another reality check.

I'd throw Vandy 2005 in there, too.

Granted, we weren't very good and they had Cutler and Bennett, but still, it's Vandy. And it was at home.

It sure would hurt to lose to Rutgers, I can't even imagine how that would feel.

Do we have any Arkansas fans in the house?

And the almost loss to Air Force, if not for a last second defensive stop

Hey, but you cant have bad games against lesser opponents. It breaks internet message board code of conduct

It was their third year in D1. Nothing like the Rutgers of the last 10 years...

1996 Florida was one of the more disappointing losses in the last few decades. Not because of a terrible opponent (UF won the NC that year), but because of the crushing blow it dealt our expectations as a fanbase and program.

'93 Bama is right up there, too (yes, I know it was a tie, but it felt like a loss).

I remember that Bama game well.

I also left out the 14-6 loss to the Chattanooga Mocs back in 1958. That was before my time and I feel like an old fart on here.

Don't forget to add 1996 loss to Memphis. I watched it on tv, that's was a terrible game.

This was the game that immediately came to mind when reading the thread title. Horrible loss, a blemish on the Manning era, and hugely disappointing in the midst of a whole lot of winning.
