More talk of a coaching change (merged)

I seem to remember JM really showing his ass at the SC game. His behavior did not help his position but the die was already cast. Fulmer was the next new thing.

Another poor performance this Sat. night would certainly add grease to the skids but would not be the clincher. The die is not cast because the next new thing is not identified.....at least not that I know about.

if there was a clincher related to game management/performance, it happened last Sat in tuscaloosa

There is at least one historical difference.... South Carolina was not ranked in 1992.

If you want more differences... the game in 1992 was on the road.... the Vols were coming off of back-to-back home losses.... Alabama won the national championship that season...

The Gamecocks started the season 0-5. They were 2-5 when they beat us. They lost to Georgia, Arkansas, East Carolina, Kentucky and Bama, then beat Miss St, and Vanderbilt, before beating us.

Losing to South Carolina was the straw that broke the camel's back and got Johnny Majors fired. Will the same happen to Fulmer if the Vols lose?

It was not the Straw that broke the camel's back. We beat FL and GA while he was gone under Fulmer. Fearing he would lose his team and his job he rushed back to work to lose to SC, ARK, and AL to secure 2nd or 3rd Place in the SEC. Add to it the Facts that the bottle and treatment of players may have also contributed to his demise.......plus the Fulmer Factor.

From my foggy memory I believe there were issues not directly related to the score of a particular game that led to JM being shown the door. It was a combo of recruiting, poor relationships with other UT officials, on field performance by team, off field issues of his own, and a general feeling it was time to go. But then again my memory is being stretched. I don't remember too many folks raising hell about it.

Do not worry you are not getting Alzheimer's. Pretty much the sum of it all except for the Folks raising hell not outwardly; but internally fueled by none other than CPF.

It didn't get him fired in 2005. I think the loss to South Carolina that year was the beginning of the end for Tennessee. UT hadn't lost to Carolina in 13 years. In my opinion, that loss sent the Vols season into a tailspin.

The tailspin started right after we were handed the National Championship trophy in 1998. We countered the downward spiral in 2001 and then went right back to the nose dive ever since.

The ground is getting closer all the time!

It is time for Fulmer to bow out. You had your chance to ressurect this team and there are no more "dog gone it, we were one play away!" excuses. You have received ass whoopins. No doubt about it.
It is time for Ainge to bow out two. This guy is a senior qb and a supposed captain. Quit handing the football off like a premadonna. Why does he walk off the field with his head tucked every posession. Grab somebody by there facemask and make them understand. This isn't the qb simulator. Footbal is war. Why in hell is a senior qb throwing the football away on a fourth and three. Kick some ass. Same thing on defense.
Damn I hope we don't get another west coast qb and get somebody that wil leave it on the field.

I can't defend Ainge as a leader because I don't know what he says to the players on and off the field and neither do you, but there's no possible way you can say Casey wasn't a leader.

I'm so sick of these people who think they have to have a good ole boy southern hick to be their qb.

Even if we lose to KY and Vandy Fulmer probably won't get fired. They'll probably just give him another pay raise.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong on this but it was my understanding that Fulmer's buyout is pretty much static until we get to within the last couple of years on the current contract (2013). In other words, I think it will cost the same amount to buy him out next year as it would this year.
that is correct, and that is the direct result of the 1 yr extension, w/not raise. his buy out won't start declining until after next year, assuming there's no extension or raise after this year.

on a sidenote, i was watching CSTV's "crystal ball" last night, the one with Trev Alberts and the yahoos from CFN.com, and one of the guys on the show did say that he is 100% confident that CPF will not be going anywhere unless we finished 5-7 or something. Stated he had a source in the program that he "trusted". for whatever that's worth.........

btw, since i was so harsh in my response... welcome to the board. Continue posting please, even if I don't agree with your anti West Coast philosophy

I have to agree with Bill. I think that Ainge is good. . . I sometimes get the feeling he is dealing with the same frustrations we fans are dealing with. No one on this team is making plays. They way they are playing reminds me of freshman biology; I would go through the motions, barely stay awake and do just enough to pass the class. . .

Agree, and I'd say 85% of this board does as well.

Ainge is plenty good to win championships with. I don't see him being the problem. We have big problems no doubt, I think Ainge is one of our bright spots.

Hard to say. What isn't is that last year, with receivers to catch passes everyone here wasn't questioning Ainge.

I think you would include Ainge as on the team that is not making plays. Ainge is good at making 5 yard pass completions. Especially on 3rd and 8.
