More hype for Dobbs as potential Heisman

I for one and withholding judgement til Dobbs can prove he that he can complete the long and medium passes with consistancy and not over through the receivers. We know he can run and complete the short ones.

From Hickory, NC? Coach Barnes is that you?

When Manning was not given the Heisman I stopped caring about. It seems to be a curse anyway. Mickey Mouse could win it for all I care. As far as Dobbs goes, I only want him to be productive, I believe he will so no worries

I never use the Heis*#@ word after the Majors/Manning incedents......I call it the "Heistman"!

The only way he has an even legit chance to be in contention for it is for us to make the playoff. Then, if that happens they'll remember he's from Tennessee and eliminate him.

Chuck Oliver show was referring to the ESPN article on dark horse Heisman hopefuls and got to Dobbs. He said "ain't no way no how" Josh Dobbs wins the Heisman. He went on to mention he would be surprised if they were even mentioned as candidates.

His cohost jumped in to defend the case for Dobbs as Heisman and suggested they could be undefeated going into Bama game in right circumstances. Talked about his ability to handle media and plays well in big games, super intelligent, etc.

Oliver said Dobbs has a lot of positives but only has 5 career starts so it just "ain't gonna happen."

What really surprised me was he said "word out of knoxville is they really want someone else to emerge over Dobbs because he isn't turning into the QB they want him to be." They predicted an 8-5 record for UT.

TIFWIW

Guess they've forgotten Johnny Football won the heistman as a freshman! IMO the once prestigious award is a jinx.

Dobbs has the skills and the hype to win Heisman, but consistency in the passing game will tell the tale. Needs to be his biggest improvement.

I love who Joshua Dobbs is as a person and a player and a leader for our team however for him to even be considered for the Heisman Trophy he will have to improve exponentially from last year. Now I believe that can happen however we just haven't seen that yet. And at the end of the day I would agree with the most on here..... the Heisman Trophy really doesn't amount to a hill beans anymore so I just want him to win and win big for the Vols....

A big if but if he could just throw the deep ball good, then he might make a run at the Heisman this year or next.

An article someone posted the past few days (Murf maybe? can't remember who) got me thinking...the writer said Butch's offensive system is built off spreading the defense horizontally (duh), with precise routes and timing, and quick distribution of the ball. That last part, quick distribution, was the epiphany for me. If true, that means the opportunities for Josh to heave the ball 25+ yards downfield will likely be far rarer than the old Peyton / Tee / Eric / or even Tyler days. A lot more of Josh's big yardage will come from YAC ... in other words, will hinge on our WR corps.

I don't know if I agree with that, still sifting through it mentally, but it did make me stop and ponder. And has direct impact on how Josh would build the stats for a Heisman candidacy. Maybe it's not as important for him to "throw the deep ball good" as it is for QBs in other offenses. Maybe it's more key for him to make really smart split-second decisions and deliver the ball quickly to the right target, the one who has the best opportunity to turn it into big yardage.

Something to think about, anyway.

How many "career starts" did Johnny Manziel & Jameis Winston have before their Heisman winning years?

If a Tennessee guy ever won a Heisman vote it would be awesome if they gave it back during their acceptance speech to honor the screwed over runners up. I can only name a couple of the last 15 or 20 winners. If that were to happen they would never be forgotten by anybody that follows sports and then some. Right up there with OJ.

There's no question that, should Mr. Dobbs wind up the favorite for the Heisman, he would have to invite both Johnny Majors and Peyton Manning to the ceremony and mention both their names in his acceptance speech.

You negative guys about Dobbs need to dry it up! I believe if the boy had been in several of the games Worley was first part year especially the florida game we would win a few more! He will do just fine damn thing about it if all fails he will tuck and run and does well! Set back and enjoy the upcoming season and quit trying to coach football! You don't know sheet!

Wouldn't that be an awesome sight! And I would hope to see the cameras pan to Chris Fowler just after Josh said it, with a flashing ticker tape, "THIS LOSER PROMOTED WOODSON OVER PEYTON!" at the bottom of the screen. :)

J/k of course, I would prefer Fowler not be invited at all. :p

I don't believe for a minute that JD is a candidate for the heisman, but the bolded statement is pure lunacy.

If he can just solve that Missouri puzzle!

It's not Dobbs that needs to solve Missouri....he set a UT Freshman QB record with 26 completions making his first start 2 years ago...would've been 27 with his first td pass had Josh Smith not dropped a perfectly thrown pass. He also led the team in rushing that night.

Fast forward to last year. He, Joshua Dobbs, one of the most elusive dual threat QBs in the country, was sacked 6 times because he was playing behind the worst OL in school history.... he was running for his life all night and didn't have his most talented wr ...yet he found a way to keep us in it and make it a one possession game late.

That's there opinion. They have no way of knowing. It would be considered the mother of all Heisman risings if he did move to the top two or three candidates by seasons end. I'm picking VOLs 10-2 with Dobb's so he will move up the food chain with that record. My opinion is good as those folks today.:lolabove:

The older you get, the more you realize, we've witnessed much stranger things happen, than Dobb's winning the Heisman, in our own lifetime....No?

Well, Dobbs has 9 career starts, not 5. And how many career starts did Newton have going into his Heisman year? I don't think career starts is all that relevant.

Tim Tebow had zero starts going into his Heisman year...so did Manziel and Winston...and a little guy way before their time...Barry Sanders. :shades:

Am I the only one here who thinks Dobbs still has a long way to go before he can be considered a heisman candidate?

His athleticism has brought a new element to our offense, but he has to improve his accuracy and down field passing a lot before he can be truly considered a heisman candidate.

Not to say he can't lead this team to a great season, but what he's shown thus far makes him seem a lot more like a Chris Leak than a Marcus Mariota.
