More Depth

We have got to get deeper on the offensive line. There is still a significant drop off from our 1s to our 2s. If we are really going to be successful we have to have more depth
Welcome to the new normal. No one has depth at most positions. OL takes the longest time to develop, and our developmental players haven’t. We were without a starter and a key backup going it to yesterday’s game. Then lose another during the game.

But backups aren’t going to stick around 3 years to play 2.

It appears side of ball is not easily interchangeable. Have to admit I don’t understand other than at any elite level, all details are critical.

I wish that during the off week that we could turn one of our many quality dlinemen into an olinemen.
I know it doesn’t work that way. But I wish that it did.

A lot of those are what they refer to in the football business as MISSES. unfortunately.

OL depth was my #1 concern coming into the season. It reared it's head last night. The backend of the D was second. But, they've answered the bell for sure, although we havent been tested over the top yet.

A lot of them are what you refer to as freshmen. In a couple years, Warren, Perry and co will be juniors while Sanders and Utu will be sophomores. If anybody in the 23 class also steps up (read: Sham) our depth will look pretty good. Until then, we’ll have to hope for some luck with injuries.

Of the 21 listed 10 are freshman or red shirt freshman, five are our starters, that leaves six, then you’ve got to account for the Misses someone else mentioned and the injured.

We did better once they put LJ3 out there. Want to see more of him rotating with Campbell since he has bad knees. Keep big John healthy and get the young guys some snaps. DD did all he could he is more suited if playing tackle on the right.

LJ3 graded out as the best O-lineman according to PFF. He played well and I believe we will see more of him in the future. He is a big man and has good size for an OT. Even Herbie commented on what a big man he is. Notice there are no Juniors on the list, that's when most O-linemen start in the SEC. Hard to start as a fresh/soph in the SEC. The future looks bright on the O-line, just need to stay healthy this year.

As I posted in a different thread, from my perspective, I did not see a single player for OU who was better than his counterpart from Tennessee. We had better talent on both sides of the ball and it really was not close.

Notice the lack of juniors on the list. That doesn't bode well for next year. We will probably have Heard and Johnson III at tackle. The interior will be a mystery. CJH may be hitting the portal hard for interior linemen.

Oklahoma D was definitely SEC worthy. As good as Bama, Georgia, Texas, etc. Last night showed us we are not there yet on depth on the OL that they can trust., thus the playcalling the 2nd half. But, they hopefully will continue to develop this room and get better. I know vol nation doesn’t want to hear this but we got to stay healthy in this position group to get where we want to go, the playoffs. Go Vols!

The new play off format means the team that can stay healthy will win it all. Playing 2 or 3 top tiered teams in a row after the regular season is brutal

The problem the team has is that, because of the coaching chaos a few years ago, they do not have a single junior on the OL roster. This is hurting depth and plans for next year.

Note: closest thing to an OL junior are our RS-So: Johnson, Reddick, and Grant.

Edit: Sorry @farmdogvol I posted before reading. Agree with you about missing juniors.

Do you think it might be cause we were about 20 scholarships short the last couple of years. Maybe we need to tell Josh!!
