Monte on Tennessee

well, i'm glad we have wilcox because he's young, knows how to stop the spread (monte didn't) and his defenses consistently were the best in his conference.
What does age have to do with it, and it's easy to have the best defense in the WAC.

As far as stopping the spread i'm with kptvol, define spread.

Chavis coached two of UT's worst defenses of all time in 2006 and 2007. I don't understand why everyone seems to forget how recently horrible we were. I also seem to remember Monte's defense holding Florida to fewer yards than any team they faced last season, so I guess maybe he did know how to coach against something other than pro-style.

LSU ranked 11 and TN ranked 27 in scoring defense by these numbers.

I'm not trying to defend Monte or Lane, and not withstanding the fact that Tennessee was left holding the bag at the end of the day, I think it's really easy to discount the previous coaching staff.

One should keep in mind what that staff inherited when it arrived, and truly, nobody really knows eactly how far Tennessee would have risen if that staff had stayed in place for 4, 5, 6 years. Personally, I think they would have done well. That said, I think we eventually would have found ourselves on probation for recruiting irregularities (to put it kindly), but... is what it is.

Bottom line, a lot of people were stoked about getting Lane Kiffin. MY perception is that the people who were leary of him were primarily those who wanted to keep Fulmer and Chavis. Many people were excited to get the recruiting machine known as Ed Orgeron, and virtually everybody's panties were getting wet at the thought of Monte Kiffin strolling the sidelines.

Go back and read all the posts about the praise for the genius of Monte Kiffin.

Granted, I haven't read all 12 pages of this thread, but if the first page is any indication, you guys are blaming Monte for poor defensive output last season --- the ONE season he was here, when we were absolutely plagued by injury and had depth issues then, too.

To say that Lane and Monte are poor coaches is, I think, making an assumptive stretch.. if for no other reason that they weren't here long enough to establish ANYTHING. Some folks seem to want to suggest that the game has passed Monte... and maybe it has... It sure is easy to draw that conclusion when you only have one season of a plague-infested, short-staffed defensive unit and an anemic offense.

Monte is still arguably the highest-respected defensive guru in football and last year for Tennessee was, IMO, more of a bad TEAM season rather than an exclusively bad COACHING season.

Give a guy a pocket knife and then you want to crucify him for not being able to be successful in hunting elephant?

I said I wan't trying to defend Lane and Monte with this post, but I guess it kinda sounds like that. I do think Lane is a POS and everybody ought to be jumping on that bandwagon if they haven't already... but really, that's where folks ought to leave things. To come out now and suggest how crappy their coaching was is just sour grapes, IMO. Some of you people seem to be *****ing because that staff wasn't able to win a NC in their first year at the helm... following a decade of crap from Fulmer.

Gimme a break... pretty sick of hearing about the Kiffins. Let's just move on.

Lane is pretty much a straight up POS. This is recognized in most coaching circles right now. I'm not sure whether Monte is blinded at this point by love for his kid or senility or a combination of both.

Monte did well in AL and FL and failed in the UCLA and Ole Miss games.

I just don't understand how people keep pointing to UCLA game as a defensive failure. They had 186 total yds, 3-14 on 3rd down, one TD and we got a safety.

I admit I was excited about Monte coming to UT, but after watching him coach for 1 yr., I was not impressed.

Seeing some of his comments, I am glad he joined his sorry son at USC. I now firmly believe little Lane did not fall far from the tree.

I am glad we have the coaches we now have, even without seeing them coach a game at UT over that bunch we made the big mistake of bringing in to corrupt our image.

I'm guessing here... but possibly because in the 3rd Quarter UCLA scored (3 FGs) on every drive when we really needed a stop. Their worst starting field position in those drives was the UCLA 40, though.

Regardless, to say the UCLA game was a failure for our defense is asinine. Offense? Absolutely. Defense? Absolutely not.

I hope you're a little easier on Wilcox, I think he's a pretty good coach.

I believe Wilcox will be a great coach.

My comment about Monte was about him being so highly thought of that everyone thought he was the best. I think we will be happier with Wilcox than USC will be with Kiffen. But regardless, I am glad they have him and we have Wilcox and company.

It may be assumptive, but who cares. The sons of Jezabel rolled in here, soaked us for 4 million bucks and left town with their mouth talking about us the whole time. Kiss um and feed um fish heads for all I and most of the rest of the Vol Nation cares.

Frankly I'm tired of hearing them down us to make themselves look better over the stunt they pulled when they left. I don't blame a guy for leaving for more money or a dream job, but don't expect your previous employer to like you very well and in the case of a football team that has millions of fans, don't expect the fans to sing your praises after you left.

Ok, but Boise's D was ranked in the top 10 last year.....ours sure as hell wasn't

true but Boise's opponents last year doesnt stack up to what we played last year either..... they gave up a good amount of points in the games were they actually played somebody but when they played in conference is what helped them get a top 10 defense...

I thought monte's defense was bad last year, and believe or not it was better with chavis. Monte never used eric berry right, but thank god they are gone. I am ready to get on with this year. Go vols!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
