Here's what you need to be asking yourself.......what is Tebow going to do when we unleash the Full Monte?????

So was the OP an exaggeration?

No. And if you've read other posts... other people have heard and read it too. I'm pro-Kiffins. The OP is a valid discussion point. Doc and Jeff were discussing it this morning on WNML. Don't shoot the messenger.

Let's see!!!! He was able to stay in front of the high tech, multiple and everchanging NFL offenses. A large percentage of the defenses in the NFL and many on the college level are based off the cover two, of which Sir Monte is credited with pioneering. He will need a couple of recruiting classes and a season or two to develop his complete college defensive strategy, but being outdated or in someway unable to scheme or compete with SEC offenses is complete rubbish. I hope that is what Corch Meyers, Bammers and those chumps from Georgia expect, but I'll bet not! EB thinks he knows what he doing, need I say more! Go Vols!!!!

I think Monte may need a few adjustment games though...NFL game is a lot different then what he will see @ FL, Auburn, @ Ole Miss

Those teams spread it around a good bit...use trickery

I feel confident in him being able to handle anything GA or Bama can throw at him though

C'mon doubters. Monte is a died in the wool professional defensive coordinator of the absolute first order. He ain't no Johnny Come Lately. I suspect he has watched more film of the spread and spread option than Yourbane. You can bet, since coming to Rocky Top, he has watched, rewatched and broken down every play of every spread option team on the planet, particularly those in the SEC at least 10 times.

I would bet he knows how to defend against it better than most team know how to run it. I am very confident that if we do poorly against spreads, it will be the players to blame and not the scheme.

Monte's basic scheme is the Tampa 2, oops I meant the Rocky Top Two, but that is not the only defensive scheme or formation that he teaches and understands. So, have then bring on; the spread, spread option, shotgun, shortpunt, pro-set, wild cow, triple option, singlewing, Flying Wedge, Teebow-Tippie-Toe or whatever, Monte will have a scheme to stop or dramatically slow down any of them.

I surely hope the Negavols haven't already crawled out from under the cosy confines of their rocks. The honeymoon can't be over because it hasn't started yet.

I have 100% confidence in Monte Kiffin and EVERYONE on this staff. I know that in the NFL, prevent defenses at the end of games are pretty commonplace but I just don't see it this year. We won't see any "Mustang Package" and "3rd and Chavis" anymore. John Chavis was a very solid Def. Coord. but Monte Kiffin blows his socks off. I am so excited about this season. Will we beat Florida? Most likely no way. Will we beat Bama? Probably not. Can we play with everyone else on the schedule? I say absolutely YES!! More than anything, I am excited about UT Football more than I have been in about 7-8 years. Can you feel it!! GO BIG ORANGE!!

I'm sure besides studying film of the spread,he's been talking to Coach Chaney. CJC was a Spread innovator, heck Corch Meyers went to Purdue to learn about the spread from CJC. I'd say CJC knows a few weak spots or tendency's about the spread that he will share with Monty. I couldn't wish for a better equipped defensive staff! GO VOLS!

Monte isn't doing anything new. His system is taken from the 1970's Steelers defense. Chuck Noll acknowledged this.

I've read numerous articles as well - most saying that it was a lateral move with Chavis to Monte and some expected our defense to drop off a bit next year as well being the first year in the scheme since it's so "complicated" - he's not making it up.

Then hundreds of random posts from other teams fans blabbering the exact some stuff on other message boards.

If you UT fielded a troop of girl scouts, I would STILL have a million times more confidence in CMK's ability to call the right D at the right time than Chavis. Chavis is a good defensive coach but he's a horrible play caller.

I'm guessing one of the phrases they used was "UT won't be better than the 3rd ranked D they had last year"?

Right. Chavis was on a fishing expedition with a Bama coach last summer... Monte was working to figure out how to stop UF's O. One article said he spent so much time around the Buc's facilities that they provided him with an office.

A. Monte won't have NFL all-pro players? Neither will the other team's offense.

B. I'd rather have offenses adjust to our defensive scheme, not the other way around.

I suppose whoever started these "rumblings" just forgot about Coach O being on the staff.

If you're like me, you've started hearing rumblings of assorted fans and writers downgrading Monte Kiffin's defensive prowess as we start fall practice. They're saying his defensive schemes may not compete well against our big rivals. They're saying his schemes are outdated even by SEC standards. They're saying he can't learn what our rivals do quick enough to counter it.

How do you reconcile this with all of the preseason hype around Monte? Is this just a way to ground us a little more and lower our expectations? Do our expectations need to be lowered? I was hanging our ability to compete with top-flight programs in the SEC on the strength of our 'D'.

Regardless of why people are starting to distance themselves from their once praise for Monte, I'm sticking with him. I think he's going to keep us in games that the pundits predict we'll be handily beaten in.

Wishful thinking.... IMHO. We'll see.

What will be refreshing will be to see a real, actual, halftime adjustment made on defense.

I think Monte can handle that.

How did John Lynch do when he left Monte and his system?
Post of the month.....

The wild hog package lasted one week in the NFL. Hit the mesh point and the play is dead. If the DL and LB know how to get to the mesh point it's over before it starts. It was fun to see Belicheck freakin on the sideline even if it was just one week. The good thing is there is no look MK hasn't seen. Seriously, you think MK wants to get shown up? No way!

The Sport Animal gurus were talking about it this morning. They didn't quote specific people (that I recall) and they strongly disagreed with the pundits. I just can't figure out why people can say these things before we've played even one game. It seems baseless to me. They pointed to the fact that we return some great players to defense this year and we should be solid all the way around.

Listen you guys relax, your getting paranoid, These guys have so much film to watch that grasping the basics seems to be pretty well at hand from what I get from Eric's Tweets so ,The Sports Animals monday morning Quarterbacks need to keep talking their trash in your dash, cause there just spewing BB fodder. NO WORRIES MATE!

So it's a "lateral move" to go from the guy who coached the second half of the UCLA game last year to an NFL legend. Really?

All that claiming he is using the 1970s Pittsburgh defensive schemes means to me is that he is smart enough to see an idea that works and use it.

A lot of teams have tried similar schemes without the same results, so that would give me even more faith in CMK.

and re: Chavis

Great technique coach, smart guy, incredibly stubborn. Sometimes things that should work in all reasonable thought, just don't for whatever reason. Coaching a defense isn't all scheme, and when you run a soft zone defense it's like asking your players not to play as hard... it's going to you affect you in more ways than it would if you had a team full of robots(or for that matter professionals).

NOTE: soft zone has its appropriate moments, those moments do not consist of trying to stop a team from marching 80 yards when your previous schemes were working just fine. Remember, vs. UGA in 2001 they spent most of the second half inside our 50 and couldn't do anything. Running what was essentially a prevent when UGA had 44 seconds, multiple timeouts, and 59 yards to go was stupid... and even when we went to a base defense near the goal line it was too late because we were mentally out of synch.
