"It's been a long day and a tough day ... but a good day," coach Lane Kiffin hoarsely said moments after the final drill. "You can't simulate coming out and pounding your body as long as they did this morning, and then coming back and doing it again.
"It's tough, but it's supposed to be. Two-a-days aren't supposed to be easy. They don't give you as many of them anymore, so when you get them you have to maximize them."

All sounds great until the end where you read that half the starters sat...That makes it tough to tell if Crompton and company are actually getting better IMO.

"I'm here to say that this Tennessee team is very special, because they are playing as one and there's no super stars shining brightly. They are playing as one bright shining star, on both sides of the ball."
(After the Alabama game - Smokey's Trail - UT Reporter 10/24/98)

One can only hope... Go Vols!!!

I think this is important. UT does have at least one super star, Eric Berry, but he doesn't let it overshadow his dedication to the team and team play. UT may not have the best talent at individual positions, but I do believe that if they all play as one, just like in 1998, then UT can win a game or two that people don't think they can win.

'98 team had a hell of alot of individual talent.

I'm just holding my breath reading these practice reports hoping not to see a major injury. From almost every report I've read and seeing the players, every player looks to have dropped weight or gained weight depending on the need. Seems like these cats really took the off-season workouts to heart. Vlad is just an absolute beast.

To me, this situation bears little resemblence to the team/season of '98.

That being said, there is an awful lot to like about how the chemistry is evolving this year. I hate projecting wins. Just hate it. Pointless to me. But when you work hard at the right things, the breaks tend to favor you in close game moments....

To me, it doesn't really matter if we win 7 games or 10 this season. I just want to see the program moving in the right direction. I want to see good tackling on defense. I want to see intensity from the players. I want to see smart decisions with the football. And, most importantly, I want to see Tennessee look competitive. The talent is coming, so I just want some reassurance that the coaches will know what to do with it when the cupboards are restocked.

I agree with your main point though. If you can minimize your own stupid mistakes and remain focused, then you put yourself in a position to take advantage of some lucky breaks.

As to practice, I wish I was hearing more about O'Line progress.... But they always say you only hear about the line when they screw up, so maybe no news is good news.

True. And they are going against a pretty good 1st team DL (after the 1st teamers theres a drop off) so they might not be as apt to shine.

The most telling statement I've read is where Orgeron allowed that the team was going to play for Kiffin. We've seen the evidence since the first of the year. Lots of motivation and a team attitude. We might not win every game but I honestly feel that the Tennessee football team will give it everything they have. No one is going to like to play them this year

I'm glad to learn that JC has been more consistent and cut down on the interceptions Sat and Monday. If he stops turning over, we can have a chance at becoming a pretty solid offensive team.

The things I love to read about with this team is the desire and dedication they have. They may not win them all but they are going to give 100% on every play. I know our staff have not coached a game for us yet but right now they are working harder at getting the players we have right now to believe in themselves and the man next to them. This all breeds success! It may not show up as a W this year but it will set the stage for our future!!!!

Stephens seems to be making more plays than JC if you believe the media. I wonder if Stephens might snatch the job from Crompton when all is said and done?

Only problem is Walker and Brown aren't practicing and Williams has been somewhat limited, so it's hard to know exactly where they stand. Any bites from Chaney or Cregg?

Except maybe Florida and Alabama and Georgia.
