Our local Boys Club has a fund raising dinner each year with a special guest speaker. Last year it was one of my all time favorite Braves Dale Murphy. This year it is the man, the myth, the legend, the immortal AL WILSON!!:rock::rock:

Can't wait to meet him. I remember hearing rumors during the NC season, about Al going in at halftime during the Arkansas game?? and reading the riot act to the team resulting in the miraculous win!
Does anyone else remember this? I would love to ask him what he said to the team.

I think he did the same thing in the locker room against Auburn during the 97 SEC title game.

When I would come back to Knoxville in the summer from College I worked for the Trustee's office. Several Vols worked there in the summer..John Henderson, Eric Westmoreland and Eddie Moore just to name a few. Westmoreland and I became good friends and he told me a great story about Al.

He told me about during Al's senoir year he was dealing with a injured shoulder....the trianing staff told Al that he couldnt practice and just to be sure they locked his locker so that he couldnt get to his pads. Apparentlly Al didnt like this and actually ripped the locker off the hindges and started getting dressed!!!

Now I dont know how secure this locker was but its still a great story and I can only pray that the good Lord will bless us with another player that has that kind of mentality. But there is only one Al Wilson....he was a very special player!

You always remember those players that truly gave their all for Tennessee day in and day out! There have been so many over the years. The ones that stand out to me are the ones that never quit, no matter the situation.

Reggie White
Peyton Manning
Al Wilson
John Henderson
Eric Berry

Just to name a few!

Al Wilson is probably my all time favorite VOL, but we had some help too from Billy Ratliff in that Arky game.

From GOVOLS Archives:
"Folks, it wasn’t a fluke. Ratliff, after receiving a short pep talk from injured lineback Al Wilson, beat the offensive lineman who’d been beating him all night when it mattered most, knocking him backwards into Stoerner, who tripped and fumbled the ball. Ratliff recovered, and the Vol offense drove the field to take the lead and win the game."

Mine too!! Some day when the good lord blesses me with my first born son I will name him Wilson in honor of my all time favorite volunteer!! I'm gonna tie a T-bone steak around his neck so he has to fight the dog over it, this will make him mean as a bag of rattle snakes & tough as marine Corp drll instructor. He will carry one of the greatest names in UT history so he will have alot to live up to lol

Billy Ratliff deserves the UT hall of fame for that play. All Ark had to do was run the clock out---the Vols were toast. Then-----a miracle. Stuff of folklore.

Wonder what he said to Stoerner? That's the guy to thank for the Arky win.

Stoerner might say, who the heck blew up my tackle Burleson and knocked him back into me? And Wilson might say, that was my home-boy Billy Ratliff who I got fired up at half-time.
