I saw him at Walmart and we talked for several minutes. He said two things that really excite me. First he said the D will be running lots of stunts and blizting 6 or 7 very often this year. Second he said the atmosphere is different this year. He said it's more like a family. Lastly, he said mark my words WE WILL BEAT FLORIDA THIS YEAR! Man, I hope we do! Go VOLS!

One of the main reasons Dooley hired Sunseri was because we were not aggressive enough with Wilcox. I don't care how bad your DBs are, if you do not at least show some semblance of pressure and mixing up packages then you will get burnt. I like Wilcox and think he has a lot of potential, but he was awful especially when the only time he blitzed was when he would send a delayed blitz from one of the LBs. The LB never got to the QB because the ball was already gone by the time he got to the LOS. The SEC has a lot of average QBs. When an average QB knows that you will never send pressure and knows that your DB is playing soft coverage, he will pick you apart.

I'm sure he'll be excited to know that someone turned a conversation on the beef jerky aisle at Walmart into a victory guarantee on the Internet.

Wilcox never blitzed because he didn't feel comfortable that our secondary could shoulder the responsibility.

Like I said, you simply cannot give any QB the knowledge of knowing your never going to blitz. I don't care how bad of a QB you are, if you know the defense is playing soft coverage and there will be no pressure then you will pick the secondary apart. You have to mix it up and get the QB thinking.

And with a D Line that could never get past the OL, the QB would be licking his chops every time that we blitzed.

"Oh look, Marsalis Teague is one-on-one with any WR, go deep."

There is about 2 QBs in the SEC that could scare you. I personally would rather have a blitzer being in the QB face and hit a deep throw than sitting back in the same soft coverage getting picked apart. Take the Florida game for instance. Brantley was given all day to throw. If you let a subpar QB like that know that you are going to give him a 10 yd cushion, he is going to pick you apart. And what Florida WR showed anything about stretching the field. You have to mix it up and at least get the QB thinking. We never did that unless it was a pathetic delayed LB blitz that never got to the QB and left the middle of the field open.

If (when?) he sees this he'll probably never talk to anyone outside of the team environs again.

On a side not Webb, can you imagine Wilcox playing that soft coverage in the Pac 12? He is going to get eaten alive.

Bad example. Brantley didn't beat us, nor did any of the WR's. Our inability to stop Rainey beat us.

Agree about Rainey. However, Brantley had several drives where he got key 3rd down conversions because of the soft coverage and no threat of pressure. We forced a QB that makes mistakes into making 0.

BTW, just so there's misunderstanding, I wasn't advocating Wilcox blitzing the majority of the time. However, you have to do it enough to keep the QB guessing. The SEC is full of average QBs.

I can agree with that.

But ultimately, we held UF to 4 FG's and 2 of their TD's were on 3rd or 4th and goal. Even Brantely and no name WR's can take a blitzing defense and just throw it over the top. Especially if our blitz never gets to the QB.

That's my point. I've never seen a D-coordinator, no matter the talent gap or deficiencies, have blitzes that very few times resulted in getting to the QB. I thought Wilcox was awful at disguising the blitz. It was one of the main problems I had with him.

We didnt blitz much the last two years because 1, we had to protect ourselves from where we (Tennessee) were woefully thin in the DLine and secondary, and 2, we didnt have enough speed to pull it off or recover from it if it failed. Hopefully Couch now understands how much he needs to improve his strength and conditioning to compete and dominate in the SEC. Last year, through:loco: all his bravado, he was not ready.

It is hard to tell whether it was Wilcox's scheme or just the inability of the players to do what they needed to.

But I can see his thinking for not blitzing. If we don't get there with a blitz, ever, then might as well have those players in coverage.

Definitely can see his thinking, and that thinking is correct. But you have to mix it up just a little bit no matter the deficiencies. I agree that for the most part we needed to drop back in coverage to cover up the DB deficiencies. I just think we lacked a little variety that forced bad or average QBs to have decent games. We heard all offseason how Maggitt could get to the QB. I can count on one hand how many times we utilized his pass rushing skills from his LB position.
