I heard an argument about MLK day that frankly I agree with. It shouldn't be MLK Day, it should be Civil Rights Day. MLK is the only person to have a current holiday named after him. They got rid of Washington and Lincoln's birthdays and lumped them into President's Day. Anyone else think that it's right that MLK has a day and no one else does?? I know I am a day late on this, but I had to work 14 hours yesterday and didn't feel like thinking last night. BTW, correct me if I am wrong but wasn't his "I Have a Dream" speech mostly taken from a speech that was given in the 50's by a pastor or something like that?? I am not trying to stir the pot here, just wanting people to think about it and see if they agree with it.

Does it really come down to the fact that you didn't have the day off and some did? :p

I think MLK is a more than deserving candidate to have his birthday turned into a holiday.

Just me. MLK is the face of the Civil Rights Movement. Celebrating him is celebrating civil rights.

It's just semantics really. What's it matter if MLK has his own day? Because regardless, if you are celebrating MLK's birthday, you're celebrating civil rights anyways.

^^ I agree... the fact that they make the "it should be civil rights day" argument shows they know exactly what MLK day stands for

I completely understand that argument, but the fact remains that Rosa Parks had more to do with the Civil Rights movement than MLK did, IMO. MLK was just the face of the movement, IMO.

Right, so if they lumped Washington and Lincoln's B-Days into one day that celebrates all the presidents, then why not do the same for MLK day so that way people can celebrate all of them??

I dunno, i guess because changing it at this point is bordering on being unnecessary.

Once again the fact remains that two presidents of the United States had their own holiday and now they don't. So I guess MLK is more important than those two right??

Whoa whoa whoa, wasn't sayin that at all, and i hear your argument loud and clear, but why argue it? you know what it stands for, and i'm pretty sure everyone else knows how significant MLK and tons of other people were to America and civil rights

If Rosa Parks doesn't do what she did, then MLK doesn't even surface, IMO. MLK rode that bus ticket (pardon the pun) to be the face of the civil rights movement. I just think its ridiculous that he is the only American person to get his own holiday that's named after him. That's just my opinion though.

and yeah, i get what you're saying.. but without rosa parks, somebody else would have eventually risen to the occasion.

It's on Washington's B-Day if I am not mistaken.

oh, just wondering.. almost proves your point that i have no idea when their birthdays are..

I dunno, just don't think holidays necessarily need like revision every year.

And i know that's not quite what you're saying.
