MLB Position Next Year

I always thought Maggitt was more of a Middle Backer than outside. Wouldn't surprise me a bit to see him take over for AJ

bump. worth discussing.

Recruited since 2012 as ILBs:

Kenny Bynum (2012 class)-- has played in a few games since he got to UT but had a knee injury before his freshman season. not sure about this one.
Corey Vereen (2013 class)-- converted to DL. starts as DL this year...unlikely to make a switch to mike
Gavin Bryant (2014 class)-- looks like he redshirt this year.
Jakob Johnson (2014 class)-- has been moved from mike to DL and now (august?) looks like hes going to be an OLB? still developing but has raw athleticism from what i gather
Cecil Cherry (not yet signed 2015 class)--have a hard time believing he will start immediately next year but looks to be really talented.

on the depth chart:

Colton Jumper--played against utah state havent seen him since; listed behind AJ on depth chart

Other LB on roster:

Dillon Bates (2014)--recruited as OLB; injured during UGA game.. was playing behind JRM before injury. possible switch to mike??
Michael Cantwell--will be a RS senior. has not played any games since arrival at UT. walkon.
Cortez McDowell--(2014) reserve will LB; spending freshman year on special teams. not sure if he would switch to mike.
Cody Underwood--freshman walkon. has not played a game.
Elliot Berry--(2014) special teams and has played LB. likely want that speed on the outside. also a little short(?) to play mike? versatile and talented player but dont see him at mike.
Justin King--will be a RS junior; interesting was recruited as dual threat QB, athlete, OLB but looks like the ideal mike at 245 lb 6'2. has played every game this year.
Curt Maggitt--obvious who this is. i think he's been just now coming into his DL/LB hybrid position and cant see the coaches pulling the rug out from under him and switching him to mike. but it would be nice to think about since he's a great leader and makes good reads. you have to wonder why he was outside this whole time and they'd make him switch his RS senior year. i agree he fits the part of a mike though and may be the best option.

if i had to guess it will be Curt Maggitt at mike if he wants to switch. and if he doesnt, it'll be between Dillon Bates and Jakob Johnson (if he hasn't been switched to the outside) battling for spot #1 at mike and hopefully Gavin Bryant will step up and Cecil Cherry comes in ready to go. looking scary youthful/inexperienced here though.

Maggitt put on a lot of size for the DL role he was asked to assume. Hard to picture him back in the secondary at this point

If the past five years have taught us anything, it's that senior leadership doesn't matter and is overrated, and also that veteran players are easily replaced with freshmen, who must be "coached up" in three months time, lest they be deemed a bust.

? He hasn't even hinted about leaving and I don't think he's a high draft pick at this point is he?

No, he's not. He's be foolish to leave after this year. It'd be in his best interest to come back his senior year and get better play on film for scouts. He'll also get much more attention and acclaim as the unquestioned leader of the defense for a team actually challenging for the SEC east IMHO.

I could see Weatherd taking over at MLB. He's a big fast kid and it would give Cherry a year to get ready

He's a rush OLB imo. The best candidates we have to replace AJ at MLB, IMHO, are Gavin Bryant, Jakob Johnson, King, Bynum or Cecil Cherry (not likely as a Frosh). Bates, JRM, McDowell and Weatherd are all OLBs.

Any chance JRM moves to the middle?

That's very unlikely given his size. He had to bulk up to move from safety to LB. His speed is what makes him great on the the outside. He helps set the edge and prevents us getting gashed repeatedly on outside runs. He's also much better for covering opposing tight ends. I don't think the coaches would want to risk adversely affecting his performance with a position change when he's the perfect fit at his current position.

IMO, the more likely candidates are Maggitt, Bates, or Jakob Johnson. MLB is really the natural position for Maggitt.

Cherry would have to master the defense and be able to make the calls. I think Jakob Johnson will take the spot.

I think it's bates, because of the way they say he is a student of the game. he has the height, he has the speed, and I think he puts on another 10lbs in muscle so he can shed blocks.
