MLB Draft Talk (July 13th 6pm EDT & July 14th 11:30am EDT)

We have a very young lineup core but the farm system is void of pitching talent. This was much needed and a surprisingly great draft.
I really, really wanted the Cardinals to take Eyanson at 55... the Mitchell kid is a fine pick (I guess) but our farm system already has a lot of good hitting and you can never have enough pitching in the pros

Doyle had the competitiveness of Evan Russell and Drew Gilbert. Man, how I wish he would have been at UT for 3 years.
Coastal Carolina and Mississippi said the same thing .... Just saying wishing Doyle would have stayed3 years at their school.

Non sequitur, but those of you who fear TV going to another top school should fear the Cardinals more. Marmol is performing above talent, but is not popular with many key players. His contract only goes through 26. There are those in the organization (Bloom/others) who are very close to TV and would love him in that seat. I still think it is long odds, but more of a threat than another college team.

I’ve said for years that the only way Tony leaves is if it’s for the MLB. He is not going to another school.

Twelve SEC universities had at least one player selected on the first day of the draft Sunday. Tennessee led the way with eight, while Arkansas and LSU each had four.

Maybe if they start their negotiations at $6M/yr but that would place him as the 4th highest paid manager in MLB. Another thing to consider is that Tony is used to putting his own team together while in MLB you have to depend on the draft, depend on your minor league affiliates are developing well enough, and hopefully your GM is pulling all the right strings in free agency, trades, etc. The only big positive managing MLB is you can have players under team control for longer periods of time compared to college players. I think it would depend on what the roster construction throughout the Cardinals organization looks like all the way down through Rookie ball for him to even consider it. He isn’t going to take on a rebuilding job whenever he has built a behemoth in Knoxville.

You just had to ruin my Monday, don’t you SF? Riding a high from last night and had to bring me down. 😢

MLB has long been my fear with Vitello, and every time I see him associated with MLB (like at the draft) it reinforces my fear.

This team was so talented I still have no idea why we just fell apart the way we did but we had 7 top 2 round picks and will like have 2-3 more when the FR become eligible
We made it to super regionals and were a couple weird fluky plays away from taking game 1 and who knows what happens from there

Making it to Omaha is really freaking hard to do.

As I said, long odds. He just has big support in that organization, and lately they’ve expressed it directly. I’d say the percentage chances that he’s still here in 2030 are greater than 75%.

Surely we can keep Ford this late right?
I’ve always thought Ford would make it to campus and it’s even more likely after last night but not totally out of the woods yet. I think his ask is pretty high so if he’s gonna get picked today it’s gonna be pretty early

Gonna ask around to see if they have gotten any implication from Ford or Appenzeller that they’ll be shutting it down and heading to school.

.
So for example, SD and Schoolcraft likely already agreed on a number before they drafted him. Of course, teams are more likely to take a chance with lower picks (happened with Burns out of high school), but you may also see a kid not get drafted at all if his number isn’t something a team will meet. Happened last year with some UT recruits who otherwise would have been high draft picks.
if a guy is picked in the top 10 rounds you need to assume he is signing. Only 4 guys selected in the top 10 rounds last year didn’t sign.

Teams don’t just waste those picks outside of very rare circumstances. Even the 11th round is dangerous. After that the late rounds are usually teams taking fliers on talented kids just to offer them what’s left and see if they’ll take it. At that point the guys who go were just ready to get their pro careers started (I.e. Lucas Ramirez)

Yes - I don’t think Tony will ever leave for another college unless drastic changes in UT AD.

Trying his hand at pro ball will be how he goes if he leaves. I do think he loves the college game though
