Talent everywhere on the field for both teams. Sure could use the likes of Carl Pickens and Floyd Miley these days.

I wasn't there, I was in front of the TV set with my mouth wide open in disbelief that great come back for a UT victory. Listening to John Ward on the radio with the tv on mute was a wonderful day in Vol History. Hard to understand that time flies when you have fun & it's been 21 years since that great day in South Bend. :)

I remember that game very well. What a comeback.

Imagine if VN existed back then. The site would have blown up in the 1st half.

I had to help cut wood that day. My dad was listening to the radio and I remember him telling me at half time they were getting killed 31-7. He stopped listening. I went back in to check it and they were just missing the field goal. I was about to tear up his truck as I was jumping inside of it. It took a while for me to convince him that they won the game. Good times

Forgot to add I have the VHS with John Ward dubbed in. Still love to watch it (only us old farts still have a VHS player laying around).

That game was more memorable to me than the 1998 game with Florida State. Not more valuable, but for me, was the best game I've ever watched with UT involved.

Watching that made me so emotional right now. Those players had such grit...so much fight....so much testicular fotitude. Those men reflected their head coach on the field. This is the one major problem with this current Vol team....they don't.

Have the video form the Vol Network. Blocked with his butt.

I feel old.

I was at the Miracle at South Bend game with my father. Best father son weekend we ever had together. I was 26.. . I said to my Dad right before the kick that Miley ran back at the end of the first half down 31-7 ' We need a miracle"..and lo and behold it was on..incredible time..During half time the Notre Dame fans were selling victory cigars and the Vol fan behind us bought 10 of them and gave them to everyone around us stating at the beginning of the 2nd half "we are a 2nd half team!!" and back then we really were. Right after that final kick was blocked at the end the guy screamed for what had to be 5 minutes. Smoke'em if you got em!!!!.. Smoke em if you got em!!!! Smoke em if you got em!!!!..then we all went on the field with the band and sang rocky top on their field for a half an hour..the players came back out and celebrated with us and had pics taken. Picked up an Indy Star Paper on way home..Still remember the Sports Page banner headline "Notre Dame rear ended by Tennessee

My dad and I were also cutting wood that day. We would cut a while then listen on a break. I almost passed out listening to John Ward calling that last field goal. Great times.

Was on my way to that game and ended up crashing with some Hoosiers in Bloomington for a one night stop over and never made it. They thought we were crazy watching that game with UT down so bad.

Incredible amount of NFL talent on the field that day.

Love John Ward's account of how he called the kick good and glanced next door at the coaches' box and saw them going nuts and looked down again at the field and realized he had blown the call.

Do you know a Stefanko, from your area. Served with him in the 82nd mid 80,s. Long shot, but it can be a small world

Wish we didn't have to keep looking back 15-25 years for our good memories. Ones in school now weren't even alive when some of that was happening.
