Well, if we're thin at DB...for now...and good at WR...Mike Matthews was really a 5 star “ATH”.
Watch his DB tape. He was like Eddie Jackson out there at safety. Ball hawk and coming up hard in run support.
I’m not sure he’s at his best position. He was running the wrong routes and dropping the ball last year too, while battling injuries.
if he can’t catch the ball he won’t have the trust in himself or the QB. No need to waste his talent at WR if he can’t be consistent…
I watched that play again, and whoever the other receiver was running the post from the other side could have literally ran under that ball but they pulled up. That would have been crazy a pass interference on the one guy and in our guy catch it up in schoolDid you give Matthews a drop on the bomb that should have been PI?
the last one you are taught slow up come back defender runs thru you if he does not turn. You can not keep running on a shorter throw. That one should have drawn a penalty but no action back to the ball.Analysis of the 3 "drops"
-- 6 yard comeback on the left sideline, ball was knee high and 2 feet outside his frame. I'm conflicted, but my Verdict is drop, even if PFF says no drop. But not an easy catch by any means.
-- 10 yard throw to the right sideline, ball thrown 5 feet too high. MM jumps about 4 feet and it's off his fingertips with full extension. Verdict -- NO drop
-- 35 yard 9 route left sideline, pressure on QB causes throw to the inside shoulder and slightly underthrown, batted away by the CB. Verdict -- NO drop (but MM could have played it better to draw PI)
Joe Burreaux had a lot of help nailing that Heisman trophy.
His highlights are scattered with spectacular receptions.
Leave it to VN to trash a player before he even gets started

He got absolutely mugged on at least 2 deep routes. He should be flashing against teams with suspect secondaries especially when our qb has all day to throw. He had at least one drop that I can remember. 5star recivers are impossible to cover. He doesn’t appear to be. So specifically to answer your question he needs to work on his route running (get open and create space), his hands (don’t drop passes that hit your hands).
I agree this will be the most talent we've had on the field since the days of Kent, Nash, Copeland, and Price. We will have Ohio State level talent at WR for years to come. Brandon is going to put up video game numbersSmith, Jackson outside and Dodson in the slot are all very talented. Brazzell and Matthews have real talent behind them. Hubbs said Smith played about 15 snaps and was targeted once yesterday. So he has already earned playing time. Our WR room is VERY talented they're just very young and inexperienced. They will all likely see playing time this year with no redshirts.
NEXT year?? We have 4 INSANELY talented WRs coming in. I would be scared to death to miss a single practice or have a bad game next season...might get passed up on the depth chart.
Keys
Bey
King
Moa
Is absolutely freaking ridiculous. The best WR class since at LEAST the 90s. Keys and Moa are both 5* guys AND ranked #1 in the country at WR and ATH respectively. Tyreek King has been absolutely dominant at camps vs some of the best players in the country. Legend Bey is a FREAK athlete and the FASTEST out of the 4 with a laser timed 10.2x 100m as a junior. Thats world class Christian Coleman speed at that age. He isnt a skinny little WR either. Hes a 195lb QB and returner in HS that carries the ball all the time. Bey should be the fastest player at UT from his 1st day on campus.
We are gonna be so loaded at WR for the next couple years. We just have to retain our talent. No need for portal WRs.
Post the video because I thought he ran over some guy's.That's true, of course. But we've had a quite a few tailbacks who never would have been caught from behind like that. Not knocking the guy, he can still be a big asset to us. Maybe he was a little winded. But man, that DB made him look slow on that play.
That is exactly what I saw also.Analysis of the 3 "drops"

That means that one of the receivers ran the wrong route. That will. Be corrected.I watched that play again, and whoever the other receiver was running the post from the other side could have literally ran under that ball but they pulled up. re-watching the TD throw to Staley I noticed how close the ref was to colliding with Staley and screwing that play up. I looked and it looks like the ref hit his highest gearYeah picking apart a 5* WR after his first start is crazy work. He will be fine.
It did look this way. Also, if 2 WRs end up in the same place 30 yards downfield on anything but a Hail Mary....somebody ran the wrong route. Whichever guy wasn't supposed to be there probably just thought the ball was for them and adjusted their route while the ball was in the air. The 73yd TD to Staley was a Post Route, but Joey saw that Staley had inside leverage on the DB and threw it to the middle of the field to make it easier for Staley to track and catch. Nico NEVER did that. Joey is sharp and experienced. It looks like
JA throws beautiful, nose down rainbow style deep balls...which are great because it both makes it easier for the WR to catch AND harder for the DB to turn his head back and swat the ball away. The rocket passes from Milton with a lower trajectory are easier for DBs to knock down and harder to catch.
