Didn’t need to knock it away. It was 2 yards behind Brazzel. If Matthews keeps running and maybe dives he could have got it or at least been close. Just wanted to see the effort. He wouldn’t have come close to interfering with Chris

Not saying this is what you are doing, but I think alot of fans are going to be ultra critical of Matthews this season because he flirted with the portal in the offseason. It’s pretty clear the coaching staff is counting on him to have a big year. I am huge fan of his ability. He needs to catch the ball better but you can say that about the entire receiver room.

I also didn’t see anything that screams “5-star!” Certainly nothing that warranted his posturing in the off-season.

If Brazzel had not been interfered with, Brazzel could have made a play on the ball. You have the omnitient TV view. MM is tracking the ball only, he can't see Brazzel.

Have you ever played WR or outfield in baseball? You simply can't see the field when you're tracking the ball. You can know your job and feel distances somewhat, but I think you're asking too much.

It’s been so long since we’ve had one of those dog 5* wide receivers that I wonder if you know what a guy ranked as high and paid as much as Matthews is supposed to be able to do on the football field?

Mike Matthews was really a 5 star “ATH”.
Watch his DB tape. He was like Eddie Jackson out there at safety. Ball hawk and coming up hard in run support.

I’m not sure he’s at his best position. He was running the wrong routes and dropping the ball last year too, while battling injuries.

if he can’t catch the ball he won’t have the trust in himself or the QB. No need to waste his talent at WR if he can’t be consistent…

Some of these threads and takes are rubbing me the wrong way today. ‘Cuse was the first game of a long season, so pace yourselves. In addition, this was Mathews first start if i am not mistaken. We won the game pretty convincingly. Lastly we have some pieces on offense that if we can stay healthy on the O line, could prove to be very exciting to watch. Who knows, we may even run Heuple style tempo at times this year.
As for Mathews, let the guy get some film before you write him off.

Exactly this. Brooks knows football and grinds tape better than anyone out there right now. He also watched MM in HS and knows his game. MM is extremely talented, a good blocker too ....he just needs to work on his hands making the catch. Hes excellent at everything else.

Smith, Jackson outside and Dodson in the slot are all very talented. Brazzell and Matthews have real talent behind them. Hubbs said Smith played about 15 snaps and was targeted once yesterday. So he has already earned playing time. Our WR room is VERY talented they're just very young and inexperienced. They will all likely see playing time this year with no redshirts.

NEXT year?? We have 4 INSANELY talented WRs coming in. I would be scared to death to miss a single practice or have a bad game next season...might get passed up on the depth chart.

Is absolutely freaking ridiculous. The best WR class since at LEAST the 90s. Keys and Moa are both 5* guys AND ranked #1 in the country at WR and ATH respectively. Tyreek King has been absolutely dominant at camps vs some of the best players in the country. Legend Bey is a FREAK athlete and the FASTEST out of the 4 with a laser timed 10.2x 100m as a junior. Thats world class Christian Coleman speed at that age. He isnt a skinny little WR either. Hes a 195lb QB and returner in HS that carries the ball all the time. Bey should be the fastest player at UT from his 1st day on campus.

We are gonna be so loaded at WR for the next couple years. We just have to retain our talent. No need for portal WRs.

True but we need Mike to be more than just someone who catches balls he’s supposed to catch. If we’re going to be taking shots downfield we need playmakers out there. I believe in him, just want to see him step into it.

Problem is how does he view himself? In his mind, he's the next Jerry Rice. Heupel moves him to defense and he at least transfers. He might just hang it up for this season and wait for the next portal to open.

He tried to bump the db to create space as it was coming down and a little underthrown, a move seen recently in years by more experienced WRs, but he’s got to go get the ball and catch it or draw a PI before it gets to waist high, which is where it landed.
