Didn’t need to knock it away. It was 2 yards behind Brazzel. If Matthews keeps running and maybe dives he could have got it or at least been close. Just wanted to see the effort. He wouldn’t have come close to interfering with ChrisBut if he had gone for it and somehow knocked it away from Brazzel, we would be murdering him for that too.
I also didn’t see anything that screams “5-star!” Certainly nothing that warranted his posturing in the off-season.I rewatched that play. Didn’t see anything resembling an effort issue. Maybe if he cuts outside on the second defender he maybe could have scored. He made a couple defenders look silly though when they were trying to tackle him.
Not saying this is what you are doing, but I think alot of fans are going to be ultra critical of Matthews this season because he flirted with the portal in the offseason. It’s pretty clear the coaching staff is counting on him to have a big year. I am huge fan of his ability. He needs to catch the ball better but you can say that about the entire receiver room.

It’s been so long since we’ve had one of those dog 5* wide receivers that I wonder if you know what a guy ranked as high and paid as much as Matthews is supposed to be able to do on the football field?Analysis of the 3 "drops"
-- 6 yard comeback on the left sideline, ball was knee high and 2 feet outside his frame. I'm conflicted, but my Verdict is drop, even if PFF says no drop. But not an easy catch by any means.
-- 10 yard throw to the right sideline, ball thrown 5 feet too high. MM jumps about 4 feet and it's off his fingertips with full extension. Verdict -- NO drop
-- 35 yard 9 route left sideline, pressure on QB causes throw to the inside shoulder and slightly underthrown, batted away by the CB. Verdict -- NO drop (but MM could have played it better to draw PI)
Saw the Rams receiversdo that so they could play the whole season. This was years agoDid anyone notice on the Mike Matthews catch at 1:25 in 2nd quarter that he seems to let up and looked afraid to get hit? After rewatching the play, it seems with a little more effort he could have possibly scored. Weird ending to that play. It was right after the long run by Desean Bishop and the play where the Syracuse defenders went down faking the injury to disrupt our sequence.
Some of these threads and takes are rubbing me the wrong way today. ‘Cuse was the first game of a long season, so pace yourselves. In addition, this was Mathews first start if i am not mistaken. We won the game pretty convincingly. Lastly we have some pieces on offense that if we can stay healthy on the O line, could prove to be very exciting to watch. Who knows, we may even run Heuple style tempo at times this year.Other teams have freshmen that make incredible catches. We need more possession type receivers that can move the sticks when needed. Our running game can carry the load and create scheme nightmares for opponents when we throw the deep ball a few times. Wideouts just have to make catches. You will drop some the ball is not on the mark and you will catch some of them. They have to catch everything that hits them in the hands if we are going to be an elite team. QB needs to stop high balls on quick throws to sideline or he will get WR killed and/or have some pick sixes! Teams will figure out that weakness and release the DB to simply go for the ball. Pump it once to sideline WR and then go deep to Kits or Staley running down the middle. Keeps defenders honest.
He apparently had issues with drops in high school. Brooks Austin, one of the guys on Twitter that does a great job breaking down film, is from Georgia and very familiar with high football in that state said MM had issues at Parkvorw with drops. He also said when MM does catch the ball he is electric but he needs to be more consistent catching the ball.
With a little more effort your sentence structure could have been a lot better.Did anyone notice on the Mike Matthews catch at 1:25 in 2nd quarter that he seems to let up and looked afraid to get hit? We have some talented FR that will blow by them if drops are not cleaned up. Bet we see some this week get some experience while still meaningful.
True but we need Mike to be more than just someone who catches balls he’s supposed to catch. If we’re going to be taking shots downfield we need playmakers out there. I believe in him, just want to see him step into it.Mike was getting open. I think they will shake off the drops. He got behind his guy once and Joey under threw it by a tad or it would’ve been 6.
Joe Burreaux had a lot of help nailing that Heisman trophy. There was PI on the long pass that he didn't catch but as a 5 star athete, I didn't think he competed enough for the catch. It's a one on one ball that is slightly underthrown, go get it.
Problem is how does he view himself? In his mind, he's the next Jerry Rice. Heupel moves him to defense and he at least transfers. He might just hang it up for this season and wait for the next portal to open.Mike Matthews was really a 5 star “ATH”.
Watch his DB tape. He was like Eddie Jackson out there at safety. Ball hawk and coming up hard in run support.
I’m not sure he’s at his best position. He was running the wrong routes and dropping the ball last year too, while battling injuries.
if he can’t catch the ball he won’t have the trust in himself or the QB. No need to waste his talent at WR if he can’t be consistent…
He tried to bump the db to create space as it was coming down and a little underthrown, a move seen recently in years by more experienced WRs, but he’s got to go get the ball and catch it or draw a PI before it gets to waist high, which is where it landed. There was PI on the long pass that he didn't catch but as a 5 star athete, I didn't think he competed enough for the catch.
