Mike Matthews

Bishop is Jabari Small 2.0. Good physical back with great vision but no burner speed. Except Bishop still has two good shoulders.

Star and Lewis looked a lot more explosive, but Bishop knows how to get 4-5 yards when you absolutely need it. He also was the best pass blocker of the bunch.

As far as Matthews I don’t think time was a huge concern at that point given how close we were. I think he just didn’t have as secure of a grip on the ball initially and did the smart thing by erring on the side of safety/ball security like you said.
Star looked explosive on all of his runs.

DB’s, especially CB’s are usually the fastest guys on the field. Speed is not necessarily a 215 lb running backs most important skill.
That's true, of course. But we've had a quite a few tailbacks who never would have been caught from behind like that. Not knocking the guy, he can still be a big asset to us. Maybe he was a little winded. But man, that DB made him look slow on that play.

Did anyone notice on the Mike Matthews catch at 1:25 in 2nd quarter that he seems to let up and looked afraid to get hit? After rewatching the play, it seems with a little more effort he could have possibly scored. Weird ending to that play. It was right after the long run by Desean Bishop and the play where the Syracuse defenders went down faking the injury to disrupt our sequence.
Matthews will flat lay your ass out with a block. He’s definitely not shy on contact.

Brazzell Jr was the only receiver with a true drop
You’re very generous to the receivers if the only time they drop the ball are on perfect passes right into their numbers? By my dropped pass meter, there were 6-7. If you get both hands on the ball then it should have been a catch.

Not really a drop if the receiver has to to jump and extend as far as they can. That ball is about 3 feet too high. Hopefully Joey can fix that as we go

For me it has to be within one foot of the frame of their body, head to knee. I'm not sure how pff grades it.

Did you give Matthews a drop on the bomb that should have been PI?

I'm really excited about our receiver corp This year. We could have used Thornton back, but none of the rest are really going to hurt us at all. Matthews is going to be a stud, obviously Brazzel is a beast, and Staley is going to make a ton of plays. Good to see the freshman out there as well as I'm sure he'll come on this year. A lot of people thought that the position was going to be a problem for us. I never really did, and Saturday my confidence went even higher. Yes we had way too many drops, but hopefully that was an anomaly. We shall see.

I heard today that this group of starters is only been practicing together is the starting group for literally 7 days now. So if true, there's a lot of upside here.

There was a lot of traffic around him, looked like he was securing the football. Can’t blame him for that.

Having said that he needs to get a lot better for us to compete.
His ball skills are abysmal for a 4/5 star recruit in his second season, and I think we’re maybe starting to see the reason why all of the top schools wanted him on defense rather than receiver

I was more concerned with his drops. Hits both hands, it has to be caught. He had 2 that hit both hands and he dropped them.
He apparently had issues with drops in high school. Brooks Austin, one of the guys on Twitter that does a great job breaking down film, is from Georgia and very familiar with high football in that state said MM had issues at Parkvorw with drops. He also said when MM does catch the ball he is electric but he needs to be more consistent catching the ball.

I think for some fans MM is the 2nd most hated on player on the team behind Boo. MM has been getting trashed since camp started.

First time he has 5 or more catches for close to 100 yards we will leave him alone. He has consistently underperformed to this point. Hope he shows out the rest of the year

I love Mike, I think he can be a special player for us. He has the prototypical build for an NFL WR1 and is a phenomenal athlete that plays physical. He just doesn’t seem comfortable with the ball in the air. He should’ve had 150 years and 2 TDs. Because he had a pretty easy play on the ball on that Brazzell PI call too

Boo on the other hand is another story. He also has the ability to be special, but doesn’t seem to be willing to put in the work to be great. Although I do think he’s been misused. I watched the Utah game and I like the way they used Snowden and think that’s probably how boo should’ve been used last year in a stagnant offense. So I can understand how he might be checked out a little bit. At the same time he’s getting paid like a professional now and needs to be one
