This is an interesting picture. I figure around 1965 based on the radio. What's interesting is in those days, coat and ties were common even when not at work. (watch Leave it to Beaver reruns, Ward Cleaver relaxing around the house in his suit). People wore them to games and even when traveling on trains or planes. Now it's just fraternity pledges that wear coat and ties to a game and that's because they are pretty much forced to by the upperclassmen. It is before the era of "big team merch". No Nike, no Addidas. That hat is about it. No "power T". The stadium didn't even have lights, so no night games. The T had just shown up on the helmets and it wasn't the sexy power T like we have now, it looked like the one on that hat. No Checker "Shields Watkins Field" (wasn't Neyland Stadium back then). They did put cards down on the seats and made signs with them, so you can't say it wasn't advanced. 1 game a year on TV if you were lucky (black and white TV), and the radio was how 99% of the people (not in the stadium) experienced the game. Probably the guy that preceded John Ward broadcasting (Moody? someone fill in the blank here). Looks like this throwback picture was sort of placed here only because the guy looks goofy, and he does, but dang, I like this picture much. If that's your great grandpa, I apologize. Also, no upper deck then (maybe pressbox side, could be wrong). This guy looks like he's standing on the field based on the rows behind him. How'd he pull that off?
Should be exciting to listen to Mike...good luck on as the new Voice of the Vols!View attachment 768478
