The problem with the radio stream is when it came back from commercial it would come back quicker than the TV commercials.

This x 100, was he as good as ward? Of course not… he was way better than people acted though. Having said that Keith is an upgrade and glad he’s here

kesling was a bad choice from day 1. imagine if Keith had got the job he could have broadcast Tennessee games for more decades than Ward!

granted Kesling was broadcasting during some truly awful years at Tennessee and so the negative connotation stuck.

1.That’s right. Number one Bob has been unfairly criticized during most of his time by our fans it was never really given a chance by most of them.
2. Bob maybe lost some of his zeal the last few years.
3. Mike Keith is an upgrade. All three of these things can be true at the same time.

Keith being an upgrade does not necessarily mean Bob was bad. He would be an upgrade over most just like anyone that followed, the Ward would have been a downgrade. I don’t agree with those that feel like they have to tear down one to build up the other. People feel the need Riley work an attack on Kesling in to anything and I’ve never understood it. Childish names like “Blob”, etc. it’s pathetic. If you think was bad, then that’s fine, I just don’t get the venom. We are talking about a guy who broadcasts games. It doesn’t affect your life that much in the grand scheme

Bob’s problem was he lack excitement and energy. Listening to him call games was like watching paint dry, and depending on the color, the latter may be more exciting. Mike finally brings energy and excitement to the radio that’s been missing since the John Ward days. I loved his broadcast today and excited to mute the TV while cranking up the radio come Saturdays!

Well ddunc? I think I have made my feelings clear in the past about good ole Bob, so no need to rehash.

I was at work today, so I had only the radio to follow along. I missed listening over the past 25 years. This was the first game since John retired that I listened from start to finish. Yeah it was joy to my ears too. I did not get bored at all.

And there is a reason for that. Mike Keith cut his teeth on radio, whereas Bob? He got his start mainly on TV on WBIR and Jefferson Pilot. And that is the big difference between the two. Mike Keith knows who is writing his paycheck. And acts like it. He is not Nancy Neutral.

Finally? I can enjoy radio broadcasts again. BOUT DAMN TIME!!!!!!

I am sure Bob was very professional. However? That was his problem. I actually listened to a few minutes of his final broadcast. He sounded just as excited about Ohio State scores as Tennessee scores. Now, if Ohio State was paying him? Well I guess he earned that check.

Get over the "who he followed" nonsense. He had 25 years at the job, and bunch of people who remember John are dead and gone. Not me. He might have been great at production, or so I have heard. But when you are on the air? It is all about performance. John got that. Mike gets that. Bob may be a radio hall of famer, but he did not get what John and Mike did. Ya gotta act like you know who is buttering your bread.

Putting Bob out there was like someone with a cattle herd putting a steer out there with the cows, and hoping they somehow get calves.

Just went through and listened to all the clips they posted; it’s refreshing to have that energy on the broadcast. Can’t wait to hear his first call in a big moment in a big game, it will be electric unlike Bob’s ho hum calls like “what a turn of events” when we beat UGA in that Hail Mary.

I didn't love his calls...just my opinion, but the TD calls and sack calls, seemed forced and over done...sure he will grow on me, but didn't love it

“Who he followed” is relevant because for those of us that grew up with Ward, we were always going to compare the 2. It’s inevitable. For many, the disdain was there from day 1 because they wanted Keith, so 25 years wasn’t going to change anything. There wasn’t going to be objectivity. He wasn’t Ward and he wasn’t Keith ,so any mistake was amplified.

Im not saying Bob was great, Im saying he was mostly good, but not as good of late. I think basketball was his struggle imo. Im mostly saying that I think people exaggerate when criticizing him and often go to insults about weight and stuff that’s just uncalled for. They take a shot at him at every turn and I just don’t understand it. He’s a big part of Vol athletic history even before he got that job. Also, for those that say Ward didn't get to see someone capable fill his shoes, I think Ward was intergral in him getting that job.

I think he’s good, but I didnt like how he overdoes/forced it even when he was doing Farragut /high school games in the 90’s. Didnt like it with the Titans. Some do. That’s fine. I think he does a good job, but every broadcaster may have a couple things that we don’t like. Bob and Mike are different personalities and Mike is much more outgoing and even somewhat more of a promoter. He’s a fan when he calls it as Bob seemed to try hard not to be, which I don’t understand. When I do games for a team, I call it like a fan in many ways. Im small time though, and even that’s generous.

For me, with Bob, it was not updating enough score and time of bball games when I had to rely on radio broadcasts. I very much appreciate his time doing JP games, at WBIR, and what he did at Vol Network. He’s been a part of my sports fandom for 40 years, so I guess I am sentimental about it. Cant detach him from many fond memories and appreciate how he “went about his bizness”(in Johnny Majors’ voice) and just hate that he’s had to hear so much criticism for his entire tenure. Not fair, imo.
