Mike Canales close to being named Tennessee’s quarterbacks coach

He had served as interim coach TWICE. The AD felt when he was passed over the first time on getting the permanent position, the new coach was pressured by player sentiment to retain him. He precluded a repeat of that by this declaration. Took the heat for the new coach if you will. Built up some loyalty from the team he coached...don't want none of that here! :nono: I don't see anything unusual about his resume. Unless you're an assistant to a coach that stays 15+ years (ala Chavis), this is what a career assistant looks like.

So if our new AD decides that Butch needs to be replaced after the the 2017 season, you're okay with Canales leading some sort of player revolt to force the new head coach to retain his services? Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're conveying.

A rather bland resume/hire IMO. He's a good buddy with Butch so that made him the obvious choice. This is how Butch with his thin skin and insecurity rolls. When his name surfaced, I knew he'd be the pick just like we all know he'll promote Scott. I think Canales covers a bit for Scott's inexperience at OC. Insurance hire and it remains Butch's offense. Hey, this is his job, his choice. Then again, perhaps Canales is the best he could get?
Butch wanted a yes man and thats what he got

Was hoping for Wes Welker. Less flash but maybe CBJ sees Canales as the better coach for what we have in the stable. Wondering how Canales recent job will translate to a better DT QB?

geeze.... i could probably name about 10 right now that would stoop so low to do that. "i'm a diehard fan of ut football, but i'll go on wikipedia and make fun of my own team because they did something i don't like."

So it was you then? 😁😉

They had just purged UNT...he looked around and took a job. Being his alma mater prolly helped them. Why don't you look at his resume BEFORE that one season?

Actually, his own alma mater didn't think enough of him to give him a promotion, so not sure it helped:

In fact Canales, currently an associate head coach and running backs coach at Utah State who was not promoted by the Utes last month to their offensive coordinator position,

Weinke is a no brainer for me... Heisman Throphy winner, Won NC, NFL experience in coaching and as player and most important of all connections to IMG Academy.

Jones is on the hot seat and probably will not be here by December. He's underachieved the past 2 seasons and now he's going to have to overachieve with a new QB and most of his top skill players gone coupled with a recruiting class that is really thin on guys who are physically ready to start in the SEC as freshmen. There's nothing in Jones' history to suggest he will succeed at this mission. Under the present circumstances, Canales is probably the best he can get.

not having an AD is a big problem for some potential hires. Also, offense was not the problem the past two years.

Not to be a Debbie Downer but if Canales is so highly regarded as a QBs guru then why is he coach running backs at his Alma Mater?

If he was such a great QB guru then he would have already been coaching at a power 5 school or already been an accomplished OC. North Texas and Utah State are NOT the SEC. I hate to be negative, but I'm not impressed with this. But time will tell.

Pure conjecture and no he isn't but continuing to repeat it will make it magically true.

Good catch.

Even the GoVols staff is having a hard time figuring out there is actually a Utah State team LOL

Looks like the Aggies landed on their feet though despite the crushing loss of noted QB Guru Canales.

Yost' hair must have been too long for Butch to consider.
