Mid-Summer Depth Chart Projections

This is a VERY solid, talented, and experienced two deep with one exception. If Jumper is indeed the #2 guy behind Kirkland, we have an issue big time. Last year based only on what I saw, Jumper did not have the talent to play that spot in the SEC. He had the want to and that could help if he has improved some and I feel better knowing Shoop has done very well scheming with that sort of player previously but the drop off between #1 & #2 at that position is like a cliff face off a mountain IMO.

Wait. Aren't you the same guy who berated everyone concerned about Tuttle being ready and depth at DT? And now you are worried about Kirkland, Jumper, and the depth at MLB? How ironic. Maybe you should go back and read your own advice.

Give us a starting Sam LB, Kristy. Pretty sure we're going to be seeing a lot more base 4-3 this year. It's ok to have 12 "starting" positions in your 2-deep, as much as we switch back and forth.

Who you gonna put there? My money would be on Bryant.

p.s. Like what you got. Might put O'Brien before Tuttle early on because of recovery, otherwise not a single nit to pick anywhere.

No, we don't! There's a mixture of scouting services we use. Don't give me that bull. It's like this for all of our recruits listed for recruitment too. It's not just one service!

So Trey Smith ain't dat good? Rivals doesn't think so. :). Use the composite Mr. Bologna...breaks the tie and keeps it sane. :hi:

I was just saying that we don't use just one scouting service buddy. When you see all of these recruits listed on here there are multiple scouting services used for every single one of them. That's all I'm trying to say Mr. butchna!

Don't tell me which one to use because there is not a particular single one to decided grades. Rivals & Scout have been around longer than 247 Sports anyhow. They are the standard for recruiting but it doesn't mean they're the best either. Thanks!

Don't call me buddy...friend. :). I appreciate the attempt at education, but you need to know the subject before you can teach. :). Perfectly aware of the different services doling out stars. :salute: Been following recruiting for a good long while...since the days they were issued colors as recruits (Peyton Manning was blue btw :shhh:). You can do the pick & choose and have someone argue a 3 star on one service when you're going with a 4 star on only one, OR allow the 247 composite (which ISN'T a sole 247 evaluation :wink2:) be the call, and save your lil legs a tuckering out running back and forth. Of course you have the right to go with the highest star rating and declare that...with little weight. I don't think I'm being presumptuous or closed minded when I say that most of the seasoned recruitniks on here go with the composite. :hi:

Yes, I am the same guy. Our DT situation with or without Shy Tuttle is MUCH more solid and with depth than at the MLB slot which is Kirkland all by his lonesome true sophomore self. I'm not hand wringing or wetting the bed like some of the VN heroes we have and mentioned to assist those with reading comprehension deficits I feel better about it with a DC that has been known to be effective with the caliber of player our #2 MLB guy is on this depth chart. Dude I am soooooooooooo not losing sleep over Tuttle and our defense, our opponents better be though.

When Kongbo and Phillips are your backups then I don't think there should be any concern getting to the QB. We may see a record number of sacks this year if all goes as planned.

haha. Not a single nit to pick except this, this, and this.

The list is from RTI. They said they went with the nickel because that was shown the most in spring and last season. I agree we'll likely see more 4-3 base this year than last. And I agree with Butchna that McDowell and Sapp will be good candidates to fill the star position. I'm really hoping Bryant will take over backup MLB duties. :dunno: If I had to list a 12th position, I would put McDowell, Sapp at Star, and Bates to backup JRM.

If Tuttle is healthy, he's a starter. You're right - just depends on his status.

Bates and Butcher seem to be MIA....I saw where Butcher was getting praise from Butch about his work ethic getting back into shape this spring, but at this point Bates needs to break the two-deep or there's gonna be a lot of folks head scratching for someone with that type of hype and star rating to just fade...

DE is the arguably the most stacked position on the team. Butcher may not see the field at DE this year with the depth. But he has packed on so much weight. I would be interested to see if he'll get a look at DT this fall.

247 composite equally includes all 4 major recruiting sites - Rivals, Scout, ESPN, and 247.

For your reading pleasure:

I think some of the positions were a little off...
Here's a closer opinion to the fall not including incoming players...IMO

WLB - Maybin, Bynum, Bates
MLB - Kirkland, Bryant, Jumper
SLB - McDowell, Sapp

S - Berry, Gaulden, Abernathy
S - Kelly, Griffin, Warrior

To me this looks much better....

OK. I happen to agree with you about DT, by the way. As you and others have stated, we are more talented there than we have been in years. I think people are concerned about Tuttle because he is such a stud. Dominant DTs are very, very hard to come by.

I also hear you on the worrisome types. The fire Butch crowd last year was about all I could stand. Unfortunately, they will be back the first bump in the road we have.

For teams like Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, etc. that pound the rock heavy, I'd like to see us use the jumbo DL on 1st and 2nd down then our pass rushers all on 3rd down.

Oh the Fire crowd haven't left. Their still here talking about Dobbs not being that good, our bowl win not being impressive etc. But you're right, they will lay in wait and be ready to pounce at any hickup along the way. I refer to them as self loathers. Any post being positive about UT and they have to "bring us back to reality". However let one of us say anything negative about Florida or Alabama etc and they're quick to that other teams defense.

I thought Weisman filled in for Thomas as the 2nd center last year. I think that Jones would be the 3rd in line.

What happened to Elliot Berry? Has he been injured like Bates? Is he a bust? Did I miss something?

We'll still be in nickel most of the time cause most teams run the spread.

I hate to challenge your "superior" layman's knowledge again.... BUT...

If I am not mistaken, Shoop runs a hybrid OLB similar to what USCe has done with their "spur".

It was reported earlier that a guy like Elliott Berry could find his niche there.

Something may have changed... but Shoop coached against spread teams in his last two stops also.

Smh.

I'm not claiming any superior knowledge. I just haven't seen this mysterious 3rd linebacker thats gonna save us.

We're right now desperate for adequate depth behind DKJr and JRM at linebacker. We moved Austin Smith to DE. A guy who the staff pegged as a starter after Curt went down.

Please tell me who this 3rd linebacker is gonna be that'll be a better option than Malik Foreman (who has been a stud lately) when there is a 3rd WR on the field?

I'll wait....

And don't waste my time with guys who haven't seen the field in 2 years like Elliott Berry or guys who haven't shown anything in their few snaps on defense like Cortez McDowell.

All I'm saying is Malik Foreman is a better option right now in nickel situations than whoever you think that 3rd linebacker is gonna be.
