Mid-Summer Depth Chart Projections

Yes, there is. Injury and a suspension.

Yet, despite those fewer games, significantly fewer snaps and opportunities, OBrien, the more productive/impactful and "effective" DT, had more solo tackles, more TFLs and a full sack vs Vickers' 1/2 sack.

But you keep burying ya head in the sand at things everyone else can see.

That was his subtle way of saying racism was the reason Vickers didn't play more.

What do you think the issue was with Richmond last year?

They obviously didn't have an issue playing a freshman if they felt he was the better player as they played Jones and Hall.

Jones and Hall didnt start till much later. Did they grow that much stronger in 6 weeks?

LT is the most critical position on the line. Butch felt comfortable with having experience there vs having talent there. Same thing with Jumper vs Kirkland initially.

Gators had no experience nor talent, so Ivey played.

Richmond would have struggled but would have improved tremendously as the season progressed.

Richmond will beat out Kendrick and still struggle initially. But hes a year older and stronger than last year, yet still a freshman.

There's a reason he started and played more.

Obrien is better than Vickers.
Better motor... im not sure you are watching the same games as everyone else.

No offense, D4H.

And I like Dobbs, but he'll never play a down in the NFL. But... he will do something more amazing one day.

Live on Mars, or at least help that process tremendously. Thats cool as heck in my book.

Wouldn't surprise me if Jack redshirted

It would shock the hell out of me. He's the 'next man in' in the middle of the OL. 3 guys can't play every minute all season, and unfortunately, injuries happen. He was great last year. I couldn't possibly see him getting demoted in a sense.

If one were to go back into the Richmond archives one would find he has or had some very severe eyesight restrictions AND had always played on the right side of the line while in high school, never the left. I have no insider info but speculate Kerbyson last year made the commitment to anchor the left side down while Richmond was transitioning as a left side OT. Kerbyson did, Richmond did his transition, and Blair could not beat him out apparently. Richmond has all the tools required to be a great LT, now he has a year's experience under his belt with his eye sight issues and the staff apparently convinced he can hold it down against SEC caliber opposition now.

that is true. but if they have one or two that can fill those few minutes as necessary I believe Jack would like a chance to start 3 years before going on to the league. Would allow him to add strength before starting. Obviously if something happened and he was the best alternative then that is what would happen. This is the year to take the East and play for SEC..

I would also like this.

Like Marcus Jackson did some years back to have that extra time to start.

sucks that that plan backfired last season

I think the ONLY way Jack Jones redshirts is if the injury bug doesn't go thru our OL. He's good enough to start really though. But, if we can stay healthy on the OL I do think it would be best for him to take a redshirt year.

As you guys know, the OL is a place that sees usually quite a few injuries. Hopefully we can avoid any serious injuries so Jack can take a redshirt season. Then, we would have him 3 years to start for us for sure.

Agree but don't get the unfortunate part? If Kendrick and Richmond are close, even if Richmond is slightly behind, you go with Richmond. For building experience for the future of the line/team and also for recruiting. Richmond winning out could make a big impression on Trey Smith.

Maybe you're saying it's an unfortunate disadvantage to the upperclassman. Maybe it'll push him to compete harder. I'm a big fan of competition. And either way, both should get playing time this year.

Always go with the young player if they are considered equal

All I care about is who makes plays to help the Vols win. I like Vickers, I know he's likely stronger, quicker, faster, etc, whatever. But nobody can say, like D4H did, that he's more a "more effective" player when in fewer games OBrien actually had more splash plays in the opposing offenses' backfield. He also had more solo tackles in two fewer games played.

Its been my observation over the past 3 years of O'Brien 's play, that he is the quickest DT we have off the snap. Go back and watch some of the games and focus just on the DT's and notice how quickly O'Brien gets into the gaps off the snap. I've noticed Tuttle is far and away the fastest runner at top speed of the DT's but not as initially quick as O'Brien. There was some reason O'Brien was a 4* recruit out of HS.

This is a VERY solid, talented, and experienced two deep with one exception. If Jumper is indeed the #2 guy behind Kirkland, we have an issue big time. Last year based only on what I saw, Jumper did not have the talent to play that spot in the SEC. He had the want to and that could help if he has improved some and I feel better knowing Shoop has done very well scheming with that sort of player previously but the drop off between #1 & #2 at that position is like a cliff face off a mountain IMO.

Correct sir. Gotta find a quality backup to Kirkland....before game 1.

I was just saying that we don't use just one scouting service buddy. When you see all of these recruits listed on here there are multiple scouting services used for every single one of them. That's all I'm trying to say Mr. butchna!

Don't tell me which one to use because there is not a particular single one to decided grades. Rivals & Scout have been around longer than 247 Sports anyhow. They are the standard for recruiting but it doesn't mean they're the best either. Thanks!

247 composite equally includes all 4 major recruiting sites - Rivals, Scout, ESPN, and 247.

For your reading pleasure:

"The 247Sports Composite Rating is the industry's most comprehensive and unbiased prospect ranking and is also used to generate 247Sports Team Recruiting Rankings.

All major media services share an equal percentage in the 247Sports Composite Rating.

The composite index equally weights this percentage among the services that participate in a ranking for that specific prospect."

....and I'm pretty sure the above post is the one you referenced to Kristy* just yesterday (i think) as being what got you to go back and look and decide to catch up with the times and start using 247 composite like the rest of us. Kristy* said pretty much the same thing butchna did in regard to your turn around with using 247.

You are wrong dude! I'm not saying anymore. Kristy* can tell you it was way before yesterday that I've been an advocate for 247 Sports composite. I don't need to say more!

Curious to see how this all looks after fall camp. We need a couple of players to pass Jumper or we or scary thin at MLB. Also agree that Richmond needs to step up and win a spot at RT or LT. We also need to ensure that certain players are capable of playing T and G when injuries occur.

The coaches have to do a better job of having the right players on the field to start the season. Last year, Kirkland and Martin should have started earlier.
